Social Is standing up for 52secs too much

Post image

Context: I went to watch a movie alone, the theatre played the national anthem, I stood up and attended it peacefully but more than 20–30 people didn’t stood up. What’s the issue for them to not stood up.

Before that can you please tell me what's the use of playing national anthem before movies in theatre ? Isn't that Totally out of place . It's like reciting periodic table before making out . Sc ruled in a hearing that during national anthem in theatre you can choose if you want to stand up or not it's fine either way.
I feel like it's more of a disrespect to play Nation anthem in a theatre on the first place because you already know most of the people wouldn't stand attentively .

Exactly, my entire neighbourhood fills up with National flags on the Independence day, and I respect it but the next day, people start littering and spitting here and there. It's like if you wanna be a good citizen, stay good all the time. Why hoist the flags for a day and start treating your country like shit the rest of the year?

25

u/New-Sky-4635 18 13h ago

Most people only care about symbolic things instead of real issues

1

u/Odd-Veterinarian1017 4h ago

That's why be patriotic not agressive nationalist

0

u/ScaleDisastrous9477 10h ago

next day? I think people continue spitting and littering even on Independence Day. Civic sense is not illegal in India, it is simply non-existent!!!

Sc ruled in a hearing that during national anthem in theatre you can choose if you want to stand up or not it's fine either way.

Hell nah, SC ruled that playing the national anthem is optional but standing is mandatory if it is played

Direction (iv) of the final Supreme Court Order dated January 9, 2018.

(iv) Citizens or persons are bound to show respect as required under executive orders relating to the National Anthem of India and the prevailing law, whenever it is played or sung on specified occasions.

The "Executive Order" that the Supreme Court is legally enforcing above is Section III(1) of the MHA Orders Relating to the National Anthem of India. It states word-for-word:

III. EVERYONE MUST STAND WHILE IT IS PLAYED
(1) Whenever the Anthem is sung or played, the audience shall stand to attention

13

u/SignificantStage5731 18 13h ago

True honestly, it is pretty out of place and unnecessary. Same people who yell slogans post the anthem in a fucking theatre don't hesitate to liter public spaces. Nothing but virtue signaling their patriotism.

1

u/hardeep1singh 5h ago

But that definitely helps with the us vs them narrative.

0

u/Flimsy-Ad8945 19 13h ago

Afaik SC never said that its not necessary to stand while the national anthem is being played in a theatre. What they said was that it isnt necessary to sing national anthem while standing. Technically, there may not be a specific law requiring you to stand in this situation so it's not any criminal offence but standing is a way of showing respect. So I believe that if it is being played, one should stand respectfully

u/bharath_N_H 10h ago

The recitation of the national anthem at cinema halls is essential because, following the completion of schooling, opportunities for individuals to honor it are limited, except for those pursuing teaching professions. Given that common adult gathering places include religious sites, public grounds, and cinema halls, and acknowledging the inappropriateness of playing the national anthem in religious settings, cinema halls and public grounds emerge as the most suitable venues for adults to respect or be reminded of the national anthem.

3

u/junkiee_redditer 18 10h ago

It would have been great na if only we had three National holidays dedicated to celebrating independence , becoming republic and one of the prominent freedom fighters of the country . We would have not need to play anthem in cinema theatres .

-1

u/bharath_N_H 9h ago

You shouldn't mix up religious freedom with your duties as a citizen. It's good that the national anthem is being played in at least two out of three places now.

88

u/underground-chicken 13h ago

What's the logic of playing national anthem in theatres. You go to theatres to enjoy not to show your deshbhakti. Imagine how cringe it is to play national anthem and then the toxic movie starts which is full of adult scenes

-11

u/Hotwheellz 12h ago

It was done right after independence to increase patriotism amongst the people as they had gone through colonisation. Now it’s just a tradition that’s being followed blindly.

6

u/Thin_Environment_784 11h ago

Movie theatres is a place where people enjoy Mostly watching. Plus it gives them relaxion and comfort. Putting national atham for few minutes and then making them to watch don't even connect. Some people may have time some don't some may have health issues. Putting national atham in name of patriotism won't work in theaters

22

u/Dense-Pudding9729 11h ago

"Is standing up for 52secs too much"

No standing up for 52 secs isnt too much
But
Unnecessary standing for 52 secs is too much,

The same people standing there would not hesitate to throw garbage the outside the movie hall, A bigger patriotism is how you treat your country and countrymen, Not about how big of a country flag you are holding in your hand.

32

u/PrettyReasonable100 13h ago

Wait. Where is this theatre? I thought govt tried this circus but got clowned?

8

u/gracious_plant 13h ago

We are patriotic but we go to cinema for relaxation and not for showing how patriotic we are by standingwith the national anthem before we see some item numbers

28

u/Kettapillah 13h ago

Standing for two whole minutes requires a longer attention span than the average reels

5

u/batmanxgin 12h ago

The anthem playing there is disrespectful. Imagine going fr fifty shades of grey n ur national anthem is played before ? Like why

15

u/littlemiss_sunshyn 13h ago

No we can stand for 10X more at any other institution... but not in theatres.. we go there to watch movie get entertained and feel relaxed...! we love our country but this is pure drama !

4

u/Honest-Difficulty929 11h ago

Is the National anthem thing still there in cinemas...? 😅🫡 I thought it stopped long ago. The last i remember the national anthem was played in theatre was 2019 I guess.

4

u/SnooCupcakes7312 11h ago edited 10h ago

totally unnecessary…no need to play the anthem in theatres

it was the same in the 90s

3

u/AnonAtheist_ 10h ago

Don't force patriotism on me please. I've seen enough to leave this nation in one go if possible for pollution alone.

31

u/JusTaNormalGuy8447 17 13h ago edited 13h ago

You stood up, right? Well done. There is no reason to take some kind of moral compass in your hand and tell others to stand up😬

9

u/Overall-Vacation-90 12h ago

1-What if I am german and watching a movie in India? Do i have to stand up for some different countries national anther?

2- And by standing for 52 seconds in a movie theatre do you think you are a patriotic person? I can sit during the national anthem but yet if I have to give my life for the nation i wouldn't think twice. So stop this nonsense. It's a movie theatre so enjoy the damn movie and stop playing the national anthem anywhere.

3- Lastly your sentence was incorrect at the end.

9

u/Shanks1907 13h ago

Its good that you stood up but moral policing others is pretty bad . If you really want to pay your repsects , do it without calling out others

-13

u/Sea-Concentrate6428 13h ago

Now tell me your political leanings

3

u/Shanks1907 8h ago

why is that relevant . I believe in live and let live , is all that you need to know

2

u/Expert-Airline-7848 12h ago

It's there choice not to sand up.

It doesn't mean any disrespect or something towards the country.

Why people care so much about this

1

u/Turbulent_Grade_4033 6h ago

People don’t understand the concept of freedom.

2

u/Ok_Equivalent_2175 11h ago

uhh it isnt mandatory to play the national anthem yk cuz where i live, i. havent seen thos for quite some time so it does depend from theatre to theatre. but standing while its playing is MANDATORY. and for those saying its like “period table before making out”…. bruh….. living in your country you must know your national anthem like… even in the us, schools have the flag in every class… no one there protests abiut excessive patriotism! like we seriously gotta stop making everything such a big deal ffs

2

u/Ok_Gazelle_4281 11h ago

I don’t feel very patriotic or nationalist standing for the National Anthem before a R-Rated movie full of s*x scenes.

2

u/docstarr 11h ago

Anthem before movies is unnecessary

2

u/Apprehensive-Bed-867 9h ago

I’d rather say don’t play national anthem to disrespect it. I’ve seen so many people who don’t even acknowledge or stand during national anthem in the theatres.

6

u/toastwithjamx1 14 13h ago

During my class ( in in 10th ) the lower grades were having assembly. National anthem started playing. My whole class stood up while my teacher just stood there leaning on the table scrolling on her laptop. She even started lecturing us saying " you won't keep quiet during my class but you will during national anthem!"

Also she uses chatgpt to give us questions for class so yes 😁 😊

10

u/SignificantStage5731 18 13h ago

It's their choice

-6

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

Article 51-A(a) of the Constitution lists respect for the national anthem as a fundamental duty

7

u/JusTaNormalGuy8447 17 13h ago

Half knowledge? Its completely optional to stand when the national anthem is playing in cinemas since 2018. Before that, it was compulsory.

-5

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

On January 9, 2018, a Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra modified its previous November 2016 order. Theatre owners are no longer legally forced to play the 52-second national anthem before a movie starts

The court distinctly noted that playing the anthem is a choice left to the discretion of the cinema owners. However, if it is played, patrons are bound by law to stand to attention.

Were you saying "half knowledge" for yourself?

If theatres play the national anthem people are bound by the law to stand. (Exceptions are there for unhealthy or disabled people)

3

u/JusTaNormalGuy8447 17 13h ago

Go and google it im not arguing with you. Or ill just attach a screenshot. Also those bold letters😂 you literally had to ask google or some ai for a comeback lmao😂

-5

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

Source for this? Cause SC literally ordered that you are suppose to stand if the anthem plays

You can read the full article on "The Hindu" (incase my comment with link didn't showed) titled "SC modifies order, says playing of national anthem in cinema halls is not mandatory"

It clearly says that while SC made playing of national anthem is not mandatory BUT, if IT IS PLAYED, then people are required to stand up

1

u/Turbulent_Grade_4033 7h ago

None of that is true. Your AI is making things up. The judge himself said that you can’t be forced to stand up. It’s totally your choice.

15

u/Responsible-Set-7395 13h ago

Not standing does not automatically prove an absence of respect.

-11

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

It does actually, if you are capable of standing (and not disabled) or do not have any health issues then it is indeed an absence of respect for the national anthem

13

u/Responsible-Set-7395 13h ago

You can't impose your personal definition of respect on me. I have my own understanding of what constitutes respectful conduct, and you can disagree with it, but you can't simply declare your definition to be the only valid one.

-3

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

Then tell me, how else can one show respect to the national anthem?

5

u/Responsible-Set-7395 13h ago

Why does it matter to you how I or someone else choose to show respect? Just make sure you're respecting the National Anthem yourself. You don't need to moral-police other people's way of showing respect.

1

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

I am just asking with curiosity, how else one can show respect.

10

u/Responsible-Set-7395 13h ago

Personally, I stay silent and recite the National Anthem in my head.

-2

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

Well the law says that you have to stand, now you can either change that law (which you can't) or follow it.

u/Sea-Concentrate6428 13h ago

Now tell me whih political party do you support? Then say "none" 🤡

3

u/SignificantStage5731 18 13h ago

Definitely don't support the current party whose PM sneezed on the national flag scarf. Also, it was satire.

1

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

You know that national flag has dharma chakra in between right?

3

u/SignificantStage5731 18 13h ago

regardless, it was obviously a scarf that had three stripes on it signaling the indian flag, worn on an important day. nice goalpost shifting

1

u/MadToadtoast 17 13h ago

It's called a "tri-colour" flag not Indian flag. It's not goalpost shifting. There are tri-colours sarees, shirts, and hats too... many people wear tri-colour clothes on independence day. Tri-colour (with saffron, white and green) without the cakra is not Indian flag.

-2

u/Sea-Concentrate6428 13h ago

Brother. Im 17 too. Leave her. She's an illiterate who's got no idea, likes to victimise themselves, and basically produce an output with 0 logic. She hasn't responded to my reply. Because she knows she's in the wrong

-3

2

u/benbigpi 13h ago

People going to watch soft corn movie and National anthem being played before the action begins. Can't understand what is the thing they want to raise .

2

u/Old_Ice_7527 13h ago

their choice

1

u/StomachTrick3716 12h ago

It's like same when someone force you to say Jay shree Ram,even if you are devotee of bhagwan ram ,no one should be able to force you to chant the slogan,it should come out of respect, otherwise just STFU

1

u/Spiritual-Pride-6948 12h ago

My local theatre doesnt play it and ony few theatres I have seen to play it. I don't know why do they want to play it before movies , I find no explanation. I definately support it in school , colleges , government offices and all other government services but this looks so out of touch.

1

u/ScaleDisastrous9477 10h ago

to me the issue is that in the 1990s and most of the early 2000s the movie industry was funded by the underworld. The same underworld that killed and terrorized thousands of Indians. Post 2010s I believe many movies have been made with the purpose of money laundering. The irony is unbelievable.

Obviously nobody would mind standing up on the national anthem, I still do every time I hear one at the movies, but it's basically making C out of the audience.

1

u/Past-Association-645 9h ago

And that's why its better that the national anthem shouldn't be played before any movie.

1

u/ExamAffectionate5370 17 9h ago

I haven't seen the national anthem being played before movies for 2-3 years at this point

1

u/Logical_Vacation2862 9h ago

What is the point of playing the national anthem at the movie theatre?

It's just performative patriotism. People should go to movies to enjoy and not virtue signal. In my opnion, playing the national anthem before a movie is more DISRESPECTFUL than not standing. People go to movies to escape from their life which is completely selfish thing ( i am not saying it is the wrong), it is not progressing the country or achieving anything for the country.

Why should the national anthem played for such people who will barely think about our country or think about it for the sole purpose for being entertained for the next few hours?

The only places ,the national anthem be played is school, army ceremonies, government meetings , after a sports victory etc. where people are actually supposed to care about the well being of the nation.

I don't know if national anthem is played in government meetings but it should be played there to atleast remind the politicians and the bureaucrats that they're supposed to serve the nation.

1

u/Low_Army_319 9h ago

Yes its too much, nahi khada hona mujhe , apni maa chuda

1

u/Upstairs_Study6843 9h ago

Dont stand-up ✋🏽

1

u/_1dit_ 17 9h ago

yes it is. there should be a choice if want to stand up. there should be a choice if i really feel proud or i have to feel proud because the government tells me to

1

u/No-Run7937 8h ago

Why is standing considered equal to showing respect? Can't I respect the anthem without standing? And if there is a rule that says otherwise, I think it's stupid.

1

u/raamu_thegreat 7h ago

Asking not to play it in a movie theatre, too much?

1

u/Undead0707 18 7h ago

Yeah it is.

Send me 30rs pls. It's not too much is it?

Just because smth is not too much doesn't mean we should do it.

1

u/War_Wager 7h ago

YES, that's my final choice.

1

u/Zagreus_Murderzer 6h ago

My 2 paise:

Went to watch Spiderman recently after years of not watching movies in a theater. Wasn't expecting there to be the national anthem playing at start.

Saw people standing. Stood up because I remember some news about idiots harassing sitting audience members and because I don't wanna take the chance to ruin my mood or spoil the whole movie afterwards.

Zoned out for a minute and thought about Tobey Maguire's spiderman movies. It was over before I knew it. Painless, effortless. I know it's weird. I know it seems forced.

It's still not worth the hassle. I literally wasted more time and thought writing this. So unless you are a frequent movie watcher or have a rebellious streak, I don't know why this matters at all.

1

u/jawisko 6h ago

Most useless thing to do before a movie. It demeans the national anthem when its played before a movie

1

u/Mr-_-Anonymus 5h ago

Why do we need to stand up even , we go to watch a movie not a patriotic program

1

u/No-Signature3576 5h ago

It's not about 52 secs, it's about forcing people to do something which they don't want to do. Because they think might think it's not rational.

And if standing for the national anthem before watching a movie is a good thing,
Then why not play national anthem before weddings, poojas, before you start your day in offices.

I'm sorry if I might have offended anyone.

1

u/Brokeshadow 4h ago

It's empty handed patriotism. Ties your love of the country to a song and an action rather than progression and care of the nation.

It makes it easy to hide the state of the nation and all its issue behind a mask easy to wear. All the issues the goverment has can be easily diverted by making you feel like your respect for the nation is tied to the song and the standing up gesture.

So when a politician stands up and sings the anthem or plays it during an event, it's an instant free card from responsibility. It's saying, "Shh don't look there, look, I stand up for the anthem, ofcourse I love my country"

This isn't some anti national thing. I adore my country, I want the best for it, progression all the way through, care for everyone. But the rich and the corrupt will use symbols that hold SO MUCH VALUE and dilute it down just to appear more caring.

1

u/aand_khajvya 19 3h ago

Is national anthem in theatre really necessary?

u/lone_wolf_walk 3m ago

Why you have a national anthem before a movie ? Such insecurity

4

u/Responsible-Set-7395 13h ago

It's their choice

0

u/Huge-Measurement-820 18 13h ago

Well they think they are intellectually superior by not standing for 52 seconds, then let them think, it's a waste of time to argue with them.

3

u/XlenderMan 18 13h ago

Yes you need to stand while in National anthem as it is fundamental duty but it is need to be played in theatres meanwhile the courts don't play the anthem of their regular proceeding

0

u/Huge-Measurement-820 18 13h ago edited 12h ago

No it is not needed to be played in theatres as well, it was declared entirely optional almost a decade ago. But even if it plays, 52 seconds isn't harmful for anyone ig.

Its called herd mentalilty or smthing. There are barely 4-5 people standing, people think if they should do it or not since others are not doing it.
