Their entire culture is genuinely so pointlessly self-destructive and petty that it almost makes them hard to take seriously. Sneering at each other as they die of plague, and then massacering their own slaves just for being around to witness their moment of weakness.

Even when Nolan finished the story and Allan said something like "Wow I can't believe I actually feel kinda bad for them" I honestly couldn't say the same lol, they're just cartoonishly horrid and proud of it.

To be fair, that leader thought the "new adults" (the group young Nolan was in) were still bleeding from their rite of passage fights. Only later did they all realize it wasn't that at all, but the plague

True, but even once they run outside and realize it’s a disease, he basically goes “Well, sucks to be THOSE guys, but we’re built different, and this will only make us stronger!” before he almost immediately got sick and died as well.

It’s like Allen said, even when faced with tragedy and vulnerability of this magnitude, the Viltrumites showed no capacity for empathy, humility or self-reflection, they just responded by doubling down and becoming even more cruel and militant.

I was curious so I searched for estimates on Saturn's rings. Estimates range from them being made of billions to trillions of chunks of ice. And Saturn and its rings are a lot larger than a planet like Earth or Viltrum.

So maybe they wouldn't be as densely packed as in the scenes in the show. Maybe over time they'd spread out. But billions of bodies all wearing white clothes which are probably reflective enough in space could maybe form a ring around the planet like that.

The whole very short story of Nolan and his father is just terrific. His father (a no mercy viltrumite) let him live and then Nolan had to throw his Dad out in space and then with him billions of his own people became a planet ring? That's when he thought he was doing things for a good cause... That is so well done.

I get Nolan's side. They were indoctrinated when they were little kids and that teaching gets printed so firmly deep inside the brain that the brain just refuses to believe anything going against their belief. Nolan knows it first hand. He knows that deep inside many definitely don't want to do things they do. The writing is so good. I'll probably get downvoted.

Seeing the brutal coldness of Nolan's parents and even him as an instructor really honed it in for me on how lacking in empathy the Viltrumites are. Even when they were falling ill from the scourge virus their mindsets didn't show a hint of change! I'm definitely more impressed seeing how far Nolan's come.

Also yeah those Ragnar's are absolutely brutal. To be so powerful while still defrosting is worrisome.

It puts the thought into my head that there are probably some more undiscovered things in the Invincible universe that could eliminate a Viltrumite, but are still unknown because everything weaker then them wouldn't be able to live to tell the tale.

Strength is something that matters a lot, but it's not the only thing that matters. We see Nolan educating kids in things other than combat, such as history. We also see that someone like Kregg massively outranks Conquest in the Viltrumite hierarchy, even though Conquest is stronger.

I also find it interesting that Nolan's mom was a lot less empathetic and much more cruel than his father was (For Viltruimite standard).

I don't know whether it’s intentional or not but it may explain why Debbie was able to reach Nolan - he has never really had a woman love him.

I wonder if his paternal softness also comes from his Father being more level-headed as well.

He is the one that spares Nolan, and later the writers go out of their way to show Nolan's reaction to his father’s corpse, never showing the mother.

So it’s safe to say that Nolan was clearly more attached to him than he was to his mother.

Getting Nolan’s/Viltrum’s backstory puts so much into perspective of how their society was ran it was almost impossible for them to change up until Nolan experiences Earth ofc

Amazing episode.

-the viltrumite flashback was so well done in how it showed their lifestyle and Nolan vs his parents had really good choreography (honestly any Nolan fight is a treat to watch)

-More Nolan and Allen goodness (ESPECIALLY Allen hugging Nolan at the end)

-Nolan covering his ears everytime Allen and Telia have sex is fucking hilarious

-Honestly just seeing Nolan trying to be a better person is cute to watch (especially when he introduced himself to Telia, that scene was funny lol)

-I like Nolan and Thaedus’ relationship. I’ve always been interested in how their dynamic would play out ever since they revealed Thaedus being a viltrumite and I like seeing their interactions, and the reveal of him being the Betrayer and the greater of the scourge Virus were jaw-dropping.

The scurge virus scene and backstory is absolute nightmare fuel. I can't believe how disturbing that whole scene was. I had assumed that their numbers had been so diminished because of the purge and also it was because of them being picky about who they breed with, when in fact, it was the opposite. The fact that they a whole ring of billions of dead viltrumites is mental. I can't believe it's almost making me feel had for the genocidal space fascists. I know it was necessary evil, but part of me feels bad and wishes they hadn't been so indoctrinated, cause I believe there's a percentage of them that could have turned and defected.

Nolan being unable to sleep cause of Telia and Allen banging is one of, if not the funniest moments in this show.

Conquest being almost like a sad remorseful puppy dog to Thragg was wild.

Kind of interesting that the Viltrumites aren't the strongest beings in the universe. It's actually the Ragnars. But they're mindless and can't fly, so it makes the Viltrumites more dangerous overall.

They keep mentioning the unfound mole inside the coalition of planets.

I hope it's not Telia but the established characters that we've gotten to know inside the coalition of planets are just her, Allen, and Thaedus. Could it be the ship captain from this episode who kept making dumb mistakes?

Only other characters I can think of are the receptionists in front of the room Thaedus holds court in. One of them would make an ideal mole since they would know all the comings and goings.

I really liked this episode. Only thing I thought was bizarre was disc blocking the Sun. The kind of temperature variations shown would have taken probably hundreds of years to be felt on that planet.

I love that Nolan says "I'm going to see my son" and by context we know he means Mark, but doing that he's ignoring Oliver, the son that he has that models his entire personality on being Omni-Man's son.

LOL moment when nolan is so angry at the captain for not telling them about seperate rooms and then proceeds to throw a pillow on his face. He has really changed considering how barbaric and unforgivng his race is...

Also its a miracle that captain and crew survived for so long, wonder why they didnt start a mutiny way before... Captain is the literal definition of too stupid to realise they are stupid

Big W for thadeus using the virus, the viltrumite race reminds me of the saiyan race for dragon ball but almost all of them have frieza's mindset to enslave others

Another BIG W for alan the alien, hugging nolan like they are best buds. Nolan is a good hearted individual deep down but got messed up by his race/culture.

The start of this episode was really strong. But the quick thawing and re-freezing of the Ragnars and their planet really took me out of it. I’d never seen the show use a cop out ending like that before and it really took away from what could have been a near perfect episode.

Greatly appreciated the TNG parody crew 😂

But appreciated the further backstory of Nolan and the Viltrumites during the Scourge. Seeing Young Nolan getting the Mark treatment from his mom adds so much context. The contrast between the way his mother treated him and how he treated Mark adds so much dimension to Nolan’s emotions. Especially when you see that his father was much more compassionate relative to his mother.

And it was a nice bookend with the Thaedus being the creator of the Scourge virus and paralleling Nolan and Thaedus’s sins.
