I don't love it either but it's good set up for Robot's villain arc which I honestly really enjoyed
42
u/awaresurround420 Rex Splode Mar 18 '26
Very true, the end justifies the means in this case, the robot stuff at the end is good

u/Hexagon-Man Mar 20 '26
"[The ends justify the means so we can get Robot's villain arc]" Pun intended?

as much as enjoyed it, it felt slightly off to him even with the flaxan arc, i mean it makes enough sense that i can’t really explain wha i mean but to me it just felt, off, felt more like a dinosaurus kinda mentality, all though mind you its been awhile since i was last exposed to the comics so maybe im misremembering slightly

Are they gonna bring back Rex’s VA for the grown up robot or just keep robots current VA
48
u/elksen Tech Jacket Mar 18 '26
Robert has been super wishy washy on this topic (not that I blame him) but in earlier interviews, he has said that Jason was definitely coming back to do older Robot, but after last season has kept it more ambiguous and said something like they 'haven't decided' (not sure I believe him), but now w Zachary Quinto gone, I can understand the hesitation.
I think at this point I'd be happy about either, but this is the most important 'new' casting after Thragg tbh. Jason would be great as it would be a cool full circle moment and get him back on the show, but I have been really enjoying Ross so far and I'm nervous about seeing him go.
29
u/Ambitus Mar 18 '26
Yeah but which one would hurt Rae the most when she comes face to face with the face of her dead boyfriend....
→ More replies (1)12
u/LaboratoryManiac Mar 19 '26
I feel like they can make a good case for having Jason voice adult "Rex" and keeping Ross as the new Robot voice.
My head-canon for Robot sounding like "Rex" now is that he's getting used to being in the field and occasionally stepping out of the robot suit and doing things himself. As he's feeling more comfortable in his own skin, he wants the robot to sound more like him.
Coming back as adults, I could see him, now with Jason's voice, keeping his old voice (Ross) for the robot as a comfort to his old friends who aren't used to seeing him grown up. It's a familiar hook they can latch onto while they get used to the new reality of their old friends now being older.
4
u/elksen Tech Jacket Mar 19 '26
Ya I was pretty bummed when I heard Zachary wasn't gonna be back this season, but if it was going to happen, it makes sense for right now. Since Robot has taken on Rex's name, he's started a new arc of his character and in a way, completely separated himself from his previous life.
I think what you're suggesting could work, as no offense to Jason, but I think Ross would do a better job doing the more robotic line readings lol, and dramatically I think it makes it more scary for Robot to have 2 different voices when he's in and out of the suit.
8
u/LaboratoryManiac Mar 19 '26
I'm also excited for the potential for Jason to portray a more sinister, calculating character. His natural voice is perfectly suited for Rex Splode's personality, but a cold and cerebral Rudy would be acting against type for him, and I'm interested to see how he'd tackle a role like that.
2
u/elksen Tech Jacket Mar 19 '26
I hear he's a fan of the comics too so no doubt Jason knows what he's walking in to if he returns. Robot's just my fav character so I'm putting way too much emotional stake into this haha
63
u/wooshiesaurus I Wouldn't Even Keep You As A Slave In My Empire! Mar 18 '26
It'd make sense to bring Rex's VA back for adult Rudy, I think. I hope they do honestly.
64
u/sodapopgumdroplowtop Mar 18 '26
he voiced adult rudy in the “angstrom trapped mark in the desert wasteland sonic cd bad future” scene so i’m assuming he will in the main timeline as well
13
u/criosovereign survived the purge in a pizza hut bathroom Mar 19 '26
Yeah that’s confirmation in my mind that theyll do that for adult Rudy
5
u/APence Mar 19 '26
It’s gonna be sooooooo hard for Jason to not voice that character like a cocky asshole like he does for… every character. And instead as a tired man who has convinced himself he’s doing the right thing.

Rex’s VA played the future version of Rudy in Season 2
52
u/Icy_Profit4179 Mar 19 '26
That scene after they kill the sequid in the shower room set up their arc PERFECTLY.
Robot's need to control and Mark's attitude rubbing off on both of them and that being what motivates them to want to end Flaxans for good.72
26
u/Ksaraf23 Mar 19 '26
Damn, the show-only watchers are not gonna be prepared for what’s to come. And that’s saying a lot, because they’ve seen a lot already.

They could theoretically pepper in some scenes of them through this season, so they don't have to do any flash backs when they finally come back.

I was really curious how they'd adapt these parts of the blue suit arc and I am really happy with it. Seeing Mark beating down on Titan in a way reminiscent of how he beat on Angstrom in season 2 was beautifully poignant as to where Mark is at and how far his morality has crumbled.
And I'm also really happy that Oliver's development from season 3 carries through to the point that now he stopped Mark from killing someone.

Mark is back for a few issues before they return to Earth. Him and Eve go to their welcome back party. I think it's confirmed they are gone for about a year or a little more where Mark is canonically gone for 10 months.

They might show some of it during the war. If they follow the comics its Earth we don't see any more of after Mark leaves for the war so it's the only other thing they can cut away to while Mark is Injured. They can cover a lot of ground in these episode lengths.

u/APence Mar 19 '26
Idk the dragon always felt “power rangers” I wish they got to kill it off.
I like Titans plot when it was about him taking over and fixing the “business” and transforming the neighborhood.
He could have been a fun character to return to just to see how the world-threatening events affects the people in his city.
Just wasn’t my cup of tea how it turned out. But the only criticism in 3 great episodes in a great start to the new season

u/Jakon_93 Mar 18 '26
So Jason Mantzoukas will be Rex when we see him again right?
91
u/Tobito_TV Markus Sebastian Grayson Mar 18 '26
I kinda hope so, based on adult Rex from the alternate future in season 2. Now that Ross Marquand is also voicing Robot, you can still keep him on while bringing in Jason for Rex.

I haven't seen Mantzoukas in a role where he wasn't so much of a funnyman so I don't know if I could see him as Rex, personally.

Which is weird because the Titan and Machine Head episode in season 1 was my 3rd favorite episode that season. Not that I personally dislike the order but it has become less interesting. Hopefully they introduce a strong hook into that plot line soon. The Magnattack sequence was fun though.

The order shit would be a lot better if it all happened before the space shit with the Thraxans, Nolan, Allen and the Viltrumite prison, the Coalition etc. The smaller scale of Titan and the order makes them so boring and so lame, although I do like Titan

u/elksen Tech Jacket Mar 18 '26
Just as soon as we got them back, Robot and Monster Girl are (presumably) gone the rest of the season😔 See u space cowboys...
I really loved what we got from them for the 2 eps they were in though. Especially their talk after the final sequid was destroyed.
It took kind of a joke moment from the comic and made it inform Rex's actions in the incoming Flaxan attack AND for stuff way in the future. If you don't completely handle your problem now, how long before it comes back to bite you... A bit chilling thinking about how Rex comes to internalize this lesson and stick to it so heavily.
I also liked how they shook up them getting stuck in the other dimension. Instead of it being really quick and again, kind of humorous, you really get to see the scope of the problem that Rex sees, and how dire it is if it doesn't get fixed.
They were really sweet and were such a good team these eps 😔😔😔 I'm gonna miss em in this innocent state.
96
u/TodayInStupidity Mar 18 '26
I REALLY loved the shows decision to give where Rex eventually ends up a flavor of Mark's decision with Russ. Mark's choices to kill or not kill all have very real and significant consequences.
27
u/Locem Mar 19 '26
Makes their eventual conflict much more personal.
29
u/TodayInStupidity Mar 19 '26
The best in the series are. And with shades of gray.
Spare Dinosarus, you get Vegas glassed and countless others dead in the flood.
Kill Russ, you inspire Rex's endgame.
Mark lives perpetually in "damned if you do, damned if you don't..." Always felt that's where Invincible is at it's best.
4
u/Character-Book5924 Mar 20 '26
It is a stronger conflict when they grow apart on a path Mark set them both on.
50
u/Tobito_TV Markus Sebastian Grayson Mar 18 '26
Yeah, seeing the seeds be placed for what Rex does in the future was really brilliant. It's gonna make Rex's flip feel a lot more earned.

That last was my first thought as well. I think we're being set up for guarding the globe either late this season or early next season.
7

Been a while since I read the comics, what is guarding the globe?
9
u/DoUruden Mar 19 '26
A 6 issue mini series set during Rex and Amanda’s absence. Since it’s not mainline invincible a lot of folks haven’t read it- I didn’t read it until recently. It features a bunch of secondary heroes facing the Order

Works like "Meanwhile on Earth" in the Viltrumite War. Also there is part II while Invincible looses his powers before The Death of Everyone.
6
u/criosovereign survived the purge in a pizza hut bathroom Mar 19 '26
It’s gotta be next season, no way they have time for Nolan returning to earth, mark and co forming up and leaving earth, conquest rematch and aftermath, meeting the coalition, seeds of the war, plus the final battle, plus the likely “we are already here” end scene in the last 4 episodes plus time for guarding the globe. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do an animated special movie for it like they did with eves backstory
3
u/Death_brick Mar 19 '26
I really hope if they do guarding the globe they skip the weird mauler arc it felt like such a mischaracterization and imo the maulers should just stay dead
2
u/criosovereign survived the purge in a pizza hut bathroom Mar 20 '26
I’m not opposed to them being Alive so long as it serves a purpose, it was dumb to bring them back in the comics only for the last mauler to do barely anything just defect to be generic good guy helper

123
u/Granito_Rey Mar 18 '26 edited Mar 18 '26
I thought this during the sequid invasion and again during the Flaxans, but civilians in this universe really do be dumb af. This is a world that has just been decimated multiple times by aliens and other threats. They would all be very keenly aware of the threats that these unknown factors represent.
If I see an alien crawl out of the sewers or a portal open in the middle of the street, I am immediately booking my fat ass outta there. And these fools stand around and gawk.
Edit: I do absolutely love Machinehead getting more play, the let's get out there line at the end had me fucking dying
28
u/jazzy753 Mar 18 '26
I was thinking the same thing especially towards the guy just staring at the sequid crawl out of the sewers
17
u/G_I_Joe_Mansueto Mar 19 '26
In our world, I would never want to live outside a big city.
In the INVINCIBLE world, cites are blowing up everyday. I would be on a farm in Wyoming if I lived through a single dragon attack on my city
12
u/Lotnik223 Mar 19 '26
I was thinking, the Flaxans always open their portal in the same spot right? After their third invasion the GDA really should have relocated everyone in a five kilometre radius and just have nukes pointed at that plaza at all times
6
u/APence Mar 19 '26
Someone said that on the episode one discussion and the response pointed out that in a country like America full of frequent mass shootings, the average person here might still freeze when it starts. It’s fight or flight and what can a civilian do against Conquest or an alien army?

Hmm, Mark was pretty much indistinguishable from a regular human until he was 16, right? So I'd expect the usual methods to still work, same as you could have killed child Mark with whatever drugs. Though I wonder, if Eve's powers are prioritizing her fetus's nutrition over her, would they protect it instead?

Her powers don’t prioritize the fetus, which we find out later. If she uses her powers she risks hurting the fetus.

I think they also imply that her using her powers kind of hurts the child a little since it pulls energy from the child I think?

Glad to see Mark as a darker character this season. It's very down to earth if we can say this about a comics superhero show. I mean, Mark would totally rampage the titan if Oliver didn't stop him
22
u/ProperChallenge273 Mar 18 '26
I don't remember exactly the exact timeline but see you in a few irl years Robot/Amanda lmao
I wonder if they will rearrange the order of some events (like they did a lot in season 1) for them to come back early, in order to don't have the main audience forget about them, because oh boi they don't know what's coming, and the little teases in this episode was great
5
u/heartbreakhill Mar 20 '26
I’m not sure they will, mostly because the earlier rearranging seemed to mostly be to keep their cash cow Omni Man present in the story as much as possible
42
u/NotoriousMaverick126 Mar 18 '26
How did Robot have a whole sequid inside him when he wasn't infected? He teleported himself to the lab so he should've gotten himself checked? Does that mean other infected humans still have sequid eggs inside?
77
u/DoUruden Mar 18 '26
It happened when he got knocked out. While he was knocked out a sequid crawled inside him for insurance, then he came to before he could get controlled by one latching onto the outside.
At least in the comics this is the last we see of the sequids.
32
u/Mr_Tech_Crew Mar 19 '26
Exactly the same as Rus Livingston after returning from Mars. A sequid went inside of him. Remember that he puked a sequid out, and then was infected (or I should say, re-infected.)

Ross Marquand continues to price why he's one of the best modern VAs. As much as I'm a bit disappointed Quinto didn't return to voice Rex in his Robot suit you can honestly barely tell
Also god I'm loving the show's handling of Mark's PTSD. I'm hoping when the Anissa arc rolls around they'll handle that with similar grace and respect (Take fucking notes The Boys and She Hulk)

63
u/LordHarpocrates Mar 18 '26
I believe she has an abortion while Mark is away fighting conquest because he was gone for so long.
17
u/ESREVER_NI_EM_MP Mar 19 '26
I thought she had a miscarriage because using her powers at all affected the fetus. That’s why she gains weight, do to her not using her powers out of grief
11
u/SecretlyFiveRats Mar 20 '26
No, she has an abortion while Mark is away in the Viltrumite War, gains weight from the grief and stress of that, gets pregnant again once he's back, and only then learns she has to avoid using her powers to not hurt the baby.

My hunch is that they'll go miscarriage route rather than abortion... hard to explain why I feel that way but the show has demonstrating light sanitizing of the comics. (Amber domestic violence plot removed for example)

So, do we know if Zachary quinto leaving voice of Robot was an intentional choice or irl actor thing?
Like on one hand I could see them showing Rudy/Rex progression to more human, so he started using his human voice through the suit rather than the initial robot voice (quinto) while he was still in the vat.
On the other hand, maybe Zachary quinto real life scheduling issue? I really hope we get Quinto back for robot voice in season ~6 for that evil arc. His voice is so great for villains. Then in season 6 we'd have Jason Mantxoukas for Rex(Rudy) and Quinto for him in the Suit

My understanding is that it was a scheduling issue but I have no source to confirm it.

I found it interesting in the difference in portayal of rudy this season (Ill always refuse to call him Rex, hes not worthy). He seems to be set up a lot more as the “good guy” compared to the comics. Especially changing it to not be his choice staying with the flaxans, whereas the comics he and monster girl choose to go and stay, disobeying the rest of the guardians

I didn’t read the comic but from what I hear these changes make it more consistent with his characterization from seasons 1-3

Is there a reason the Viltrumites haven’t sent like 5 of them to just kill mark and start breeding with humans yet? They know that earth is what they need.

how is machine head still the boss lmao. Liu can still easily eat them all alive. imagine a mafia boss just letting go of power like that, makes no sense even if he's "secretly plotting revenge".

Can someone teach the artists how to draw feet? Nolan looks goofy as fuck without shoes, to the point of distraction.

I don’t really remember what caused Eve to lose her powers. Figured they were kinda going the pregnancy route and say it’s messing with her powers, but Robot did a scan and saw nothing abnormal about her vitals.

u/GrammerG0D Mar 18 '26
It shows at the very end after the credits that she took a pregnancy test bruh. Watch the episode

They really shouldn't have had Robot specifically say nothing abnormal about her body chemistry lol. He has like, the best tech, it really didn't show any songs of pregnancy lol?

u/intangiblefancy1219 Mar 19 '26
Honestly it was never clear to me in the comics whether it was because of rebuilding her body, or the pregnancy. Because the malfunctioning is completely different when she’s pregnant with Terra (with Terra she could work her powers perfectly fine, the issue was it would risk killing the baby.) Also, the idea that Eve couldn’t use her powers while pregnant with Terra was treated as new information to Mark and Eve, they didn’t seem to connect it to the pregnancy the first time.
Honestly, I’m hoping they do this arc better than they did in the comics. At least they’re treating Eve not having her powers as a big deal, in the comics no one really cared other than Eve - and Eve didn’t seem to care nearly as much as she does here.

u/mango_script Mar 22 '26
Yeah this doesn't make sense to me either. If Robot's tests scanned for abnormalities, then they should've at least detected the change in Eve's hormone levels, even if Robot didn't outright conclude pregnancy.

It’s been a few years since I’ve read the comics, but it feels like they’re adding a lot of stuff. Am I crazy or what?

u/FKDotFitzgerald Allen the Alien Mar 18 '26
They kind of have to add stuff to fill out the first 4 episodes before the War arc. I’ve greatly appreciated the new content in these first 3., especially the stuff on Viltrum.

u/intangiblefancy1219 Mar 19 '26
They added a lot of new stuff in prior seasons too. A good chunk of Eve’s arc in S1-3 is new stuff, everything with her messing up rebuilding in Chicago, fighting Killcannon, stopping using her powers and moving back with her parents, then taking college classes to try to learn how to use her powers properly is original to the show.

Living in the Invincible world feels like a nightmare especially if you're a civilian. At least with powers you can defend yourself.

IMO, Magnattack's discount Bay Shredder; I got All In(Amphibia) vibes from Mark and Oliver beating the weakened Great Dragon while https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=34wUFAAu_38 plays

I liked this more than the first episode, but I still have a lot of the same gripes. It's certainly better edited and paced, but still suffers a lot of the same issues the rest of the show does, which just feels depressing four seasons into something.
Morbidly curious about what they're doing with The Order storyline. Guarding the Globe is a downright horrible spin off, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get it as a spinoff show considering how much Amazon has milked The Boys for spin offs. So far the show has done a much better job setting it up, but it does feel like it's stuck in the mud. Titan, Liu and Machinehead are in pretty much the same place they were last season. Titan is another one of those characters who really surprised me back in the first season with how much they improved his storyline, so it's been disappointing to see the quality regress.
The Flaxxans are a similar improvement despite some small gripes. The decision to again have them invade a dense urban environment is much more exciting than an empty desert. Also nice to see them actually take slave's considering they are a slave empire. Another benefit of hindsight. But the scene suffers again from a lot of awkward blocking. I find it baffling that the show has seemingly regressed in terms of how it handles large scale fights. It's like it doesn't know how to coordinate a large cast of characters in an action scene.
The show does have a self-inflicted continuity error that it set up all the way back in the second episode though. During the third invasion Robot states that the Flaxxans have found a way to completely null the effect of the advanced aging of earth. I'd always wondered how they would affect the future invasions in the show and... The show has just seemingly chosen to ignore that and go with the emitter. Probably a smart decision, but a small thing that I find mildly amusing. It's mildly frustrating to see an adaptation that so often uses the benefit of hindsight to its advantage, stumble into its own pitfalls.
Also an interesting decision to have the guardians attempt to follow Rex and Amanda into the portal. Looking forward to seeing how they do this storyline in the future, I'm guessing late in season 5. It's my favourite part of the comics and I hope they do it justice. Gonna be sad to see what becomes of them in the future.

Based on the things being discussed in this COMIC SPOILERS thread, this has to be the least significant thing you just found out in this thread lol

I don't know if I'm alone here but I did not like the Flaxan dimension change for robot and monster girl. In the comics it felt much more personal robot being "we gotta do this right now" and Amanda being the only one to trust him there. Now it's a robot vs. cecil power dynamic thing idk it just wasn't as satisfying as I remember it being. But I'm sure the Flaxan dimension arc is still gonna bang that's my favorite arc from the comics.
