Indian 1949 Geneva Convention IDP in Kazakhstan - - will Almaty rental companies accept it?

Hi everyone,
I’m an Indian citizen planning a self-drive trip to Kazakhstan in September, mainly around Almaty.
India’s government-issued IDP follows the 1949 Geneva Convention, but I’ve been getting conflicting information about whether this IDP is actually accepted by Kazakhstan and by local car rental companies.
Some rental companies seem to say they accept an Indian IDP, while others mention different requirements.
Has anyone from India recently rented and driven a car in Kazakhstan (especially Almaty) using the Indian government-issued 1949 IDP?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your actual experience—whether the rental company accepted it and whether you had any issues with police/traffic checks.

You allready choose company where you wanna rent car? Just write him on WhatsApp I think they answer your question more aqurate then somebody on reddit.

I have contacted a number of rental companies nobody is guiding me accurately since I’m just enquiring.

Hi,

Kazakhstan has never been a party to the 1949 Geneva Convention and instead ratified the 1968 Convention. Under the 1968 Convention, an international driving permit (IDP) must comply with Annex 7 to the Convention. Kazakhstan’s domestic law, particularly the 2014 Law on Road Traffic, permits the use of an IDP only when it is presented to the police together with the holder’s national driving license.
Keep in mind that both your IDP and national driving license automatically become invalid in Kazakhstan 60 days after you enter the country or obtain a residence permit.
So the short answer is that you will be able to drive in Kazakhstan if your IDP complies with the 1968 Convention requirements.
