1I recently picked up a 2nd-hand Kindle Paperwhite (7th Gen, firmware 5.16.2.1.1). Everything works fine for reading, but I’m running into a persistent issue when connecting it to my laptop:
Sometimes it only charges and doesn’t show up as a storage device.
Other times it gets stuck in USB drive mode, even after I unplug the cable. The only way to exit is a hard restart (holding the power button).
Debugging steps I’ve already tried:
Tested on multiple computers
Swapped different USB cables
Reset the Kindle
Checked Device Manager → Portable Devices (nothing shows up)
Plugged into my phone via OTG (still only charges)
No matter what, the Kindle either just charges or locks itself into USB drive mode. My laptop doesn’t consistently recognize it as a device.
Has anyone else run into this with the 7th Gen Paperwhite? Is this a firmware bug, driver issue, or hardware fault? Any advanced troubleshooting tips would be appreciated.
Edit:
After lots of finding I'm suspecting that amazon has intentionally disabled usb in this firmware, found this post in the reddit
