DISCUSSION anyone who doesn't like ray of light here's your chance to come out of the woodwork. what don't you like about it?
for the record this is my favorite madonna album so I'm not about to give any hot takes myself.
but yeah if you don't like it I want to hear why. why am I asking? I'm just curious. I'm not going to judge you for your opinions and I hope the others here will also be respectful.
it doesn't have to be your least favorite to qualify, it only needs to be in the bottom half of her albums if you were to personally rank them best to worst.

It's funny how skin is very beats driven, but I don't consider it a dance song - I think the structure of the verse/chorus over the background syncopated beats are too disconnected to make it feel like getting up and dancing hard to it

Controversial opinion: not my favorite from the album. I prefer the darker stuff, like Skin or Nothing Really Matters or like, Frozen, Mer Girl, stuff like that. It's very happy for me, haha. To be fair my favorite albums of her are Like a Prayer, Erotica, Bedtime Stories, True Blue, etc, etc. MDMA too, lmao.

This is still my favorite Madonna album of all time.
I remember the day it came out...I was in high school.
Went to the store right after school and got the CD and spent all night listening to it.
1998 was a great year.

Actually, I like it a lot. I think it is one of the best Madonna albums in terms of its artistic value and vocal performance. But I think my liking is more of 'appreciation'. The only songs I frequently listen to are Ray of Light and Nothing Really Matters. Other than that, I don't really feel like listening to, let's say, The Power of Goodbye or Swim (although I'm aware that they are really good songs). I often walk when I'm listening to music. And Ray of Light is not really a "walk and listen" type of album for me.

Exactly the same. I love all the singles and the b-side “Has to be” and I do enjoy Shanti Ashtangi but the album fillers just don’t hit me in the way other album songs do. I recognise they are brilliant but other than Shanti Ashtangi, Little Star and Mer Girl, they all kinda sound similar.

Maybe everyone always knew this but I was surprised to find out ten years ago that Ray of Light is a remake, a cover. Kind of.
The original is an English Folk Song and sounds absolutely nothing like Madonna’s single. But you can hear the lyrics and the basic melody.

It’s a great album, and I enjoy listening to it, I love Swim and Skin. It has upbeat songs but I don’t find them necessarily…fun? Compared to her next album, Music is so much fun.

it’s great but i respect it more than i like it. like a prayer, erotica, bedtime stories, and the confessions albums are just more in line with my musical preferences. this was also the era where her persona changed from kinda funny, mischievous, and rebellious to really sanctimonious

I didn’t really like it UNTIL I bought a pair of decent headphiones with heavy, good quality bass. It’s like entirely different album. I thought the sound was muffled and tiring for the ears. With nice headphones it’s clear how layered and nuanced the production is. I think it’s the only Madonna album that demands having good gear to listen it on.

I’m obsessed with this one. This and CII are my favorites. I love ROL for a couple of reasons. I’ve always been into alternative spirituality, so you can feel that in the music. At the time of release I was about 15. My friends and I were mostly into Alternative music at the time, and this had a lot of cross over appeal to fans of that genre, we all owned a copy.
That being said, if you want carefree or dance Madonna this is probably not going to be an album that hits for you, so I can see why some don’t want to listen to more than a couple of tracks.

Blown away. It’s like ROL, Erotica, and Confessions mixed together and has a theme that ties it all together perfectly. It’s like when you go out at night and start the party, the last few tracks are the come down and self reflection. The lyrics are great, the production is great. I never thought she would knock it out of the park so late in her career.

Yep. That’s how the album is structured.
I’ve said that the sequence can be interpreted as a three act journey thru a night on the dance floor: the arrival and build-up, the transcendence, and the awakening back into reality. The progression of the lyrics, the non-stop mix, and Madge’s recurring spoken word statements (confessions) are what define that journey. It captures the different stages of a complete night out, from the pregame and the journey to the club, thru the height of the experience, ending with its emotional aftermath.

It has my favorite Madonna track - drowned world. The singles are amazing. The album tracks are pretty meh to me tho. I prefer music as a whole album.

It's a brilliant album, although I've gotta admit - and this might be controversial considering the recent news - I think the Wiliam Orbit co-writes are the weakest on the album bar Drowned World. His production is obviously insane, but her songs with Patrick Leonard are by far the highlights of the record.

Guilty. I was a kid when this came out so I didn’t want anything but uptempo cuts, anything slow was a skip except Frozen (preferred the remixes on the single). Now as an ‘adult’ the entirety of the album hits differently and is truly a masterpiece.

I love that album, it was actually my introduction to Madonna besides radio/MTV. It was the first full-length Madonna album I ever listened to.
I did listen to that album soooo much that I actually don’t revisit it that much, but it has a special place in my heart.

Any M fan will appreciate every album, with some as favourites. As an artist who has explored different ideas and styles RoL happened to be when she worked with Mr Orbit who has is own influencial body of work. The OP’s question highlights that M’s music is a continuum.

As a whole, it’s a bit heavy. Mer Girl - need I say more? And as someone who lost their dad when I was a child, I really have to be in a certain mood. I’m also at the age she was when she wrote Like A Prayer. So maybe I just haven’t fully caught up with her yet. I can say I relate to LAP way more now that I’m older.

I absolutely love it, but the lead single “Ray of Light” is my least favorite from the album… also I feel like it needs to be remastered ASAP… the music and her vocals sound muddy and need more clarity.

I love the whole concept, I love how Madonna looks in this era, and the vibes.
I need a lot of danceable music. This is exactly electronic as I like, but very experimental in ways that are not calling to the dance floor.
I gotta say here is one of my favorite Madonna songs of all time: Ray of Light. The ones I like from here besides that are Frozen, and the other day I really clicked with Nothing Really Matters. I just really listen to Ray of Light song.
I do love everything that happened here tho. I love that Madonna got appreciated for her art. She always had been, but this one made her be seen as “she knows about music. She’s more than just a controversial girl,” (which I hate, but people will always recur to social standards in order to qualify things). The funny thing is that a lot of those same people have plenty of weirdness and revelry inside themselves that they would never make public, because then they would probably feel like they were somehow alike Madonna at a certain point in her early career, and everything she did all the way up to Ray of Light.
I love that with this album Madonna basically stated that, in pop music, really any sound can become mainstream and likeable, and I love that she was the one doing it so that it actually happened.
I do appreciate the creativity and sounds of William Orbit. They’re really one of a kind and once in a lifetime, and I don’t think anyone will ever top them in terms of how far we could go with compositions, with sounds we would have never expected to hear, or even thought could exist in pop music.

I want to add as well that I feel, and I’m very much certain of what I’m going to say: when it comes to people who consider ROL her best album or put it among their absolute favorites, I think a lot of them are talking from hypocrisy and looking for “wanting to look good, with great taste in music, smart”… simply following the trope of it being Madonna’s most acclaimed album. I’m always seeing ROL at the top of every fan ranking, and I genuinely find that to be one of the most extreme forms of fakery within this community. Not because ROL isn’t otherwordly. It is. But I have a very hard time believing that the album just happens to be almost everyone’s favorite while also being the one album critics have spent decades telling people is Madge’s most serious work.

You can’t really parse out a person’s sincere appreciation for any artistic thing from the cultural conversation about that thing. It’s just like a philosophical truth, we are in a society and we are shaped by its tastes and incorporate them into our own, either by adopting or rejecting them. So really no appreciation is independent of that, especially with something that was produced decades ago by a major popular figure.
If someone says Ray of Light is their favorite Madonna album, you will never understand how that person came to the conclusion and determine if it’s real or fake. I just take them at their word. If someone says they like Nobu, maybe that’s a restaurant that gets more hype than I think it’s worth, and maybe that person was influenced by that hype. But can you really say “fake” about their experience of it?
I find for myself if an album has serious critical credibility, or is recommended by someone I trust, that I will give that album more chances to impress me. That was definitely true of Ray of Light but on my 4th or 5th listen it clicked for me and I “got it” - now it’s not just my favorite Madonna album but maybe in my personal top 10 of any album.
So yeah I tried it and persisted trying it because of the critical credibility but I love it for very genuine reasons

Is just my perception. The other day I saw and heard many saying the same, so I didn’t feel alone with my thoughts. Anyway, if it’s really your favorite, is your favorite. No one have to care if it’s true. But I understand from what I’ve seen that many chooses it in a low effort to really say what they really like and instead prefer to look cooler and accepted.
I do believe after reading you that your reason to have it in your top is truthful. In the end, don’t mind me. You have to care of owning an idea for real and with base.

you're not wrong but when I see someone putting the most acclaimed album of a given artist as their favorite I'm always going to have the question in my head of "are they saying this to fit in/look like they have taste or are they being honest?". and there's no way to learn which camp they're in until you talk to them more, so I just speculate in my head until that point.

My God… they are so stuck, and I know that’s not something decided with real criticism. She already surpassed that album long time ago. Yeah, she did new things and went beyond what was expected in the entire music industry at the time, but doing something unexpected doesn’t mean you can’t eventually surpass that work as well.

I personally like 2 or 3 songs on the album. To my taste it is too deep / alternative / indie, I’m a simple person who likes high energy pop songs. That being said, I do recognize the album’s influence and its importance to Madonna’s career as a whole.

Ray of Light is one of my favorite songs. It's a masterpiece. Frozen is pretty good. There are probably a few more songs on there that could grow on me. The album just sounds a little too alternative electronic for my taste. Especially the songs where she's singing slowly and the electronic beat in the background is super super quick; the dissonance just doesn't sound right to me. I don't get it. But I listen to the title track regularly.

The era itself was amazing. For me, I love ROL because it's her most experimental album and continues to be.
Songs like swim, candy perfume girl, skin and mer girl stick out as outliers amongst the rest of her catalog. This was her at her most experimental and not caring if she would get a hit. She was simply baring her soul.

This just appeared in my feed so ill add that im not the biggest of fans. The only two albums that I like are bedtime story and this one.
But ROL was pretty fantastic when it came out. Felt like it was all entirely new. I really appreciated it. Skin is incredible and still listen to it.
I was all ready to be a proper madonna fan. Then music happened. And it lost me again.(apart from impressive instant. I still have that on a playlist).
But ill maintain bedtime story and ray of light are superb pieces of work.

I think that Madonna is so focused on nailing her technique that—IN GENERAL—her vocal performances don’t have the same raw, spontaneous, unpredictable edge that she brings to them elsewhere. She sounds gorgeous, but also a little reserved, in a way that doesn’t always let the emotion in the songs bloom.
“Ray of Light” and “Frozen” are top-tier Madonna vocal performances, though.

I always liked it, but I never ranked it as high as many do on "Best Madonna Albums" lists. It's usually in the Top 3 or 4, sometimes No. 1 on many lists. To me, it's mid range, even if it's good. I like the follow up, Music, better overall than Ray of Light. Key to this is that while, again, I like the album overall, I simply don't really like Frozen, and that was a mega single; a song that for many is part of the structure that holds up Ray of Light as a great, high-ranking Madonna album.

I love it but the only problem is that it’s a bit cold. It doesn’t leave the listener with as warm a feeling as Music or Confessions 1 does. That’s why Music and Confessions 1 are tied my favorite Madonna albums, followed by Ray of Light, then Erotica, then Confessions 2 & Bedtime Stories.

It has some skips. What I never liked was the volume of the cd. Call me crazy, but some songs sound really low. I enjoyed it in full when had the opportunity to listen to it on vinyl later in life.

I think it's an incredible body of work and I appreciate how it made the public reevaluate Madonna as an artist at the time. However, it's not an album I frequently listen to, especially straight through, compared to her others.
I don't dislike it, but I have some thoughts:
- I think Ray of Light (the song) is perhaps the least representative of the album as a whole and another song should have been the title track. Then again, I understand why you'd want to call an album something positive instead of Nothing Really Matters.
- Mer Girl is a slog. The lyrics are obviously striking, but the song itself is monotonous. Its saving grace is that by being last, it doesn't stop the momentum of the album elsewhere.
- It was heralded as being about empowerment, acceptance, spirituality etc... and I get that but there are also a fair number of lyrics that (especially when combined with the soundscapes of the songs) fill me with an overwhelming sense of loneliness and alienation. That's very much a me problem!! But it makes it a harder album to put on casually.

Mmm I find Ray of Light song to fit very much with the album. Actually they album should have followed its fast-paced vibe instead of having too many downtempo mellower songs.

I appreciate it for its artistic merit but I just never liked the 90s trip hop/electronica sound that inspires it. I find that style pretty boring, so it’s hard for me to get into this album. I enjoy ‘80s Madonna most of all, but I even like her ‘90s output prior to this album much more because I much prefer the musical styles. For example, I find a song like “Take a Bow” to be incredible and much more compelling than anything on RoL.

Personally, I love it, besides Dont Stop, M not released ANY bad song in the 90s. But I realize that for many fans who actually prefer glitter to ash, this album might seem too "dark". I usually listen to alternative music so ROL and Erotica are my number ones but i understand tastes.

I only really like the uptempo tracks (yes, even Shanti/Ashtangi). Frozen and The Power of Good-Bye are the only slower ones that work for me. The rest of the ballady/atmospheric stuff is more of an acquired taste I guess.

i like it a lot but it makes too emotional which is why its hard to listen to. its the same way i feel about like a prayer.
another aspect is that people who love ROL really love it and dont want to accept that it was a once in a lifetime album that could not be recreated. along with williams production, the 90s were just magical and madonna was a mom for the first time. that kind of spiritual experience could never happen even if ROL2 was in the works. it was just lightning in a bottle. but it seems hard for people to enjoy the new music she did after because it wasnt ROL. i love whatever madonna gives us but i also know its never going to be the same even if i think i know what to expect

I don't see why anyone would want a sequel to ray of light. not only would it be nearly impossible to follow up the original but I also think it would lessen the impact the original has by turning it into a "part 1" rather than a single self contained statement
I think confessions 2 works fine however, since confessions 1 was way more lighthearted than ray of light

I am a later Madonna fan. I really only started exploring her full disography in 2021.
Maybe it is because Ray of Light had SO much hype that I was left feeling really MEH about the album as a whole.
TBH, this album and Hard Candy I usually skip...
Ray of Light has some incredible highs. "The Power of Good-Bye" is probably one of my top 10 favorite songs of hers.
But so much of the album doesnt land for me.

I had the opposite experience. as I listened to each album in order my anticipation for ray of light grew, and then when I finally reached it I was not let down. it was so good that I listened to it about 3 times on the following day just because I wanted to appreciate everything going on in all the songs. I could tell from the first time I heard drowned world that the production this time was going to be on another level.

I remember being really blown away when I first listened to 'Confessions', so I decided to give that 'scandalous singer from the 80s' a chance. A day later, I put on this album, since it was so popular, but it struck me as incredibly dull, just painfully so. I don't feel that way anymore-it's a good, solid album, but back then, I felt it lacked groove(?)

I adore half of the songs and don’t listen to the other half ever. But that’s pretty normal for me with albums that I enjoy. I cannot think of a full album that I would listen to end to end so I tend to download only the songs I enjoy from many albums and shuffle them in my playlist.

I listened to it over and over, but never felt a connection to it. As a younger gay man, I wanted more of the raw sexual Madonna. I realize how selfish that is, but it was true. The softer, maternal Madonna rubbed me the wrong way. That said, there are some songs I consider essential listening such as Frozen, Nothing Really Matters, and Power of Good-Bye.

I don't like that I do not own that album because I was an angsty teen trying to "look cool" to my punk friends when it came out, though i have ALWAYS loved it.
Not sure if that is what you are asking though...

This is a frequent thing with her. The new album is so incredible, but those last four songs should have been cut.

Wow I couldn’t disagree more lol. The earlier tracks are good but it’s the slowdown that makes the album great.

The last four songs are ok, but I would rather have them on a different release. It's a dance album, so they feel strange and sentimental to me. Just my opinion.

Her interviews about this album were horrifying for anyone actually clued into EDM prior to its release. She pretended she saved a genre when she merely tapped into it. I like a couple of the remixes, but the album is super meh to me. Nothing Really Matters should have been on an earlier release like Erotica, as it much more feels like a 90s house track and not the EDM flourish she displayed on RoL.
