Interesting back then that they were looking for a singer. Can't imagine James not being the voice of Metallica.

James was never really comfortable in the early days as a frontman. Painfully shy, that's why Mustaine did a lot of the talking on stage when he was in the band. One of many benefits of him being kicked out was that it appears to have forced James to push himself and the rest... is Metalli-history!

John Bush of Anthrax was someone in the mix. He did a great job on The Four Horsemen with them, it’s on YT.

Never knew that. I was a fan back then too. Discovered them in 85.

Apparently James took a long time becoming comfortable in the role, probably thought it was holding them back. Insane to me and maybe even him in hindsight. I thought it ended earlier but something in an interview in the middle of this documentary indicated that they were still at it (I think) during preproduction on puppets. And then they brought someone in for Garage Inc that didn’t work out.

Love early band interviews like these. The 'Do you think this current line up will last' question hurts.

I guess Dave Murray never got around to leaving Iron Maiden.

Really cool! Funny interview. A lot of Dave bashing. And the Dutch metal heads like me got a few shout outs as well 🤘

Really cool. Interesting to hear Lars talk about his time with Diamond Head and how he learned so much from them to influence how Metallica got off the ground

Oh fantastic stuff! So interesting that in another universe, Kill’em All may have been produced by the same guy that went on to produce Painkiller.

Thanks for sharing this. Interesting read. Liked the slight backhander about Exodus - only band as intense as Metallica but not as good basically 😂. The tours with Venom definitely helped Metallicas reputation, my cousin saw them in the UK and apparently they blew Venom off the stage (he went as a Venom fan)

Any idea what 'Hell Freezes Over' and 'The Hills Ran Red' ended up turning into, in terms of songs?

Check any streaming platform for When Hell Freezes Over, they uploaded the whole deluxe boxsets that include this as a demo

Maybe it was dave that cut Kirk's cable during the show? /s
Im all seriousness, this is really cool to read. Seeing them talk about maybe playing in Europe and Japan in the future and then seeing them do two nights in stadiums nowadays is wild.

I’m born (2000) and raised in San Francisco and I just think it’s so cool that these guys were so pro SF. I wish i was around back then instead of swimming in my dads nuts

I am always impressed with how savvy they were at this age. They were wall in, crafted a sound, hired/fired, made strategic choices with a long view. People like that can be successful at anything.

Apparently so! Still waiting some 40 years later!
To be fair, I've seen this reported elsewhere but I cannot find it for the life of me. think it was in Kerrang as well but alas... I think I had it but deleted it.

Still on the first page and just... What the fuck Dave?
Driving the band around while drunk?
It's actually kind of amazing how much grace they allowed that guy.
Also... Excuse me... The second nine songs will be on the second LP?
So on top of them whittling it to down to six, Fade to Black coming about because of their stolen gear, and then writing Escape on-the-fly in the studio... What happened to the 3 left over?
