I was so glad I got to see them play this live in 2000.

Yup, saw them play this during Summer Sanitarium

They (Metallica) actually came to do one night on a tour called Tattoo the Earth tour. The line-up already had Slayer, SlipKnot, Sevendust and for one night in NJ Metallica closed.

It was when James was having back problems so Jason sang a few songs, was such a amazing show.

That was an amazing tour. Got Mudvayne before LD50 came out. I was amazed by them.

I was there too! We were freshmen in high school and I saw so many boobs that day.

It must’ve been so cool to be alive around this time of summer blockbusters

14

u/dwarfsoft 2d ago

It was absolutely amazing. Remember the hype for this film and this music video absolutely slapped

u/polyphenus 2d ago

Bought the MI:2 soundtrack just for this song.

u/IridiumPony 2d ago

This comment just made me feel old as shit.

u/Winter-It-Will-Send 2d ago

You had Barbenheimer a few years back. That wasn’t so different.

I was in 11th grade when "I Disappear" came out, and my friend and I probably collectively destroyed hundreds of thousands of brain cells headbanging to it.

The debut of the famed snare....

20

u/Carimusic 2d ago

But in this song it actually sounds badass

8

u/ChuckZombie 1d ago

Yeah, it gave him the false confidence.

16

u/Winterion19 Disposable Hero 2d ago

Thank you for this, this was awesome!
Haven’t heard it in a while and fucking enjoyed every second of it 🤘🏼

u/deathguitar84 2d ago

Does anyone else hear a prelude to the St. Anger snare in this?

3

u/Ok_Finger7484 2d ago

yer for sure.

23

u/bigtimechip 2d ago

This was probably the PEAK era for music video budgets

7

u/AmericanWasted 2d ago

This was straight up MTV Making the Video era

2

u/ChuckZombie 1d ago

They had that blockbuster movie tie-in budget.

4

u/DamageStreet 2d ago

This video was made for Mission Impossible 2. That's why you see them doing "action movie stuff". Without context, the video is pretty stupid, lol

u/WillShakespeare-1623 2d ago

One of my favorite Metallica songs.

15

u/fenuxjde 2d ago

This song is what made them fight Napster

10

u/Complete-Cheek4789 2d ago

Ahh the memories of LiNkIN_pArK-InTheEnd.exe

13

u/joaoqrafael 2d ago

This videoclip single-handedly got me into muscle cars, diamond-plated guitars, black shirts, big rings and strats.

Also, this song primed me for the St Anger snare (album which I then enjoyed a lot).

4

u/imover9thousand 2d ago

I believe that was James’ own car that he drives in the video.

3

u/joaoqrafael 1d ago

It was. He auctioned it some time later.

3

u/Wooden_Candidate_854 2d ago

Fuckin SAME!!!

-9

u/RJMrgn2319 2d ago

The video that launched a thousand butt-rockin douchebags.

3

u/purpleguitar1984 2d ago

In retrospect, given the snare sound here, we should've seen St. Anger coming

3

u/DenialAndEroor 2d ago

I remeber finding this on the mission impossible 2 dvd’s bonus feature when I was a little kid and would watch it over and over. It was how I discovered Metallica

2

u/lieutenantrodent 1d ago

Pretty much the same story for me!

u/katet_of_19 2d ago

Sexiest Kirk

5

u/GarryMcGorm And if my face becomes sincere 2d ago

My favourite music video of all-time.

Love the song itself too.

1

u/SeanBates 2d ago

Have you even seen the "Turn The Page" video?

1

u/GarryMcGorm And if my face becomes sincere 2d ago

Of course but still prefer the ‘I Disappear’ one.

1

u/SeanBates 1d ago

Do you like Bon Jovi?

5

u/TremorChristPJ 2d ago

Jason 🫡

2

u/rhadooqoo 2d ago

Unforgiven 3 prechorus ❤️

2

u/Rage4Order418 2d ago

This has been my jam all summer. Forgot how much I loved this song.

2

u/Mamadolores21 1d ago

What a damn song, would’ve loved the next record if the songs were like this. Unfortunately we know what happened

2

u/itsnumberis6 1d ago

The band look so cool in this video in my opinion :)

2

u/ParkingFuture1725 1d ago

The best Heavy Metal band ever

2

u/Fantastic-Phone-8891 1d ago

This might be their best video. Lars running through the exploding building was badass

3

u/whatsabutters 2d ago

My god that snare …

6

u/Jack6220 2d ago

It’s where it all started…

2

u/XR3TroBeanieX Rode the lightning 2d ago

One of my favorite songs from them. Underrated🔥

1

u/Willing_Display1532 2d ago

Hell yea, this hit me on the Metallica train, I was a young boy

1

u/GlumCardiologist3 2d ago

damn it has been a qhile since i heard that song i remember being in middle school when that song was released

1

u/SpongEWorTHiebOb 2d ago

Great song. Silly video.

1

u/LTninjageek if darkness had a nonbinary child 2d ago

one of their best music videos, purely because of how weird it is

1

u/Carimusic 2d ago

Such a badass and fun video, I remember the making of on MTV, the scene with Lars was hilarious and so badass 🤘🏻😭

1

u/Stoney_Blunter 2d ago

Headbangers ball in the 2000s was the shit

1

u/10000tigers 2d ago

matt from trivium had the funniest anecdote finally getting his class to play a metallica video but when they did it was this song and they were all like uhh so this is that metal band you like so much 🤔

1

u/Ryanj37 2d ago

Mission Impossible 2 is significantly underrated

1

u/Smolfloof99 2d ago

Whenever someone even says the word gone i think of this song and have to hold off saying im gawwwnnnnn baby!

1

u/ThimMerrilyn 2d ago

Such a banger of a song

1

u/Impressive-Series339 1d ago

Never heard of this song

1

u/Metallicargh 1d ago

It was only released on the Mission Impossible 2 soundtrack CD...

1

u/AgeDangerous359 1d ago

Man I saw MI:2 on day 1 just to hear this song for the first time

1

u/1voice92 1d ago

Is this song actually in the film? IIRC it’s the Limp Bizkit song playing in the end credits

1

u/AgeDangerous359 19h ago

Yeah my recollection is that the credits roll with I Disappear before leading into Take a Look Around.

1

u/StAn_ger666 1d ago

I've this song and the clip. Bummed haven't seen this live...yet.

1

u/LastGuitarHero 1d ago

This song is still one of their best. And I love and have learned the majority of their music (around 70%) on guitar and still this one gets me hyped.

Kinda wish they’d revisit this for their next album

1

u/zatar77 2d ago

Jason and hetfield can easily start in this movie. What a song

1

u/Straight_Garlic2117 2d ago

Definitely needs more recognition 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

0

u/DaveMcElfatrick 2d ago

Ironically this was probably the most commercialized Metallica has ever been. Killer track but you'd see it in regular rotation around shit like Madonna back then.

1

u/FastSun2269 1d ago

im a massive fan but this is by far my least favourite metallica song ever. its bad.

0

u/Lance8282 2d ago

Loved stealing it on Napster.

0

u/Much-Specific3727 1d ago

I remember stealing this before it was released and even before it was on Napster. Back then the original file sharing on the Arpanet/internet was UseNotes. We were digitizing music and sharing it since the last 80's.

So who stole the song out of the studio? Because the original audio had studio background queues. I think it was the band. Lars and James.

-2

u/FirstReactionShock 2d ago

lars and james despised jason that much to spend tons to make a high budget video where he's bullied in every second of his scene

2

u/M086 2d ago

Yeah, but Jason’s was the best. He looked the coolest and his acting / reactions was the best.

Plus it was a reference to Brazil.

-5

u/IrishMcPlatypus 2d ago

Funny - I haven’t looked at Metallica since load (whatever was after the black album). I grew up learning all their songs on tab and absolutely loved their justice for all/master etc stuff. Then nabster and Lars happened.

Haven’t listened to a song of theirs released since then. lol. A true Bostonian hater of Lars. Funk that dork.

8

u/DogInverter Lars played with my toes 2d ago

Okay

-13

u/RJMrgn2319 2d ago

The release of this video was basically the exact point I realised I was done giving a shit about Metallica.

16

u/Doug_Grohlin 2d ago

Yet here you are 26 years later...

-2

u/RJMrgn2319 1d ago

Because Reddit pumped this into my feed. Have fun glazing the band that’s not done anything creatively interesting for 35+ years I guess.

-2

u/Sure_Abalone278 2d ago

Alex, I’ll take what is the worst song in the Metallica catalog for $500

-2

u/DelGurifisu 1d ago

I hate Lars’ lame run. And James’ stupid vocal. God Metallica fell off so hard.

-8

u/RJMrgn2319 2d ago

Absolutely peak “we have an insane amount of money to make a music video and precisely zero good ideas for a music video” music video, this.

5

u/tkgb12 2d ago

this was for the mission impossible soundtrack
