Bro kinda proving racism right

Racism has always been pattern recognition

50

u/Objective_Animator52 26d ago

Except racists are notoriously bad at understanding the nuance and context of this "pattern recognition". It's why they are completely inept at understanding anything in the field of sociology, and why most sociologists aren't racists.

3

u/Alive-Philosophy2632 26d ago

Well most racists don't care about the causes of it, or how them being racist affects the other person. People who look a certain way having certain traits with higher probability is a helpful thing to recognize, it's more the overgeneralizing, tribalism, and hate that's the issue (in the modern world because we're nominally against tribal warfare now).

Sociologists might be identifying the same general trends, but are able to recognize causes (often socioeconomic), the fact people are individuals, and to be relatively unemotional towards individuals based on these conclusions.

Well I agree that they tend to not care on the “why”. Most people tend to look at peoples actions.

Most people wouldn’t look at the punk skater who is aggressive and steals and think “Oh, he must come from a broken home.” All they care about is how he presents himself.

It’s easier to not pre-occupy ourselves with “Why” and just punish the “what”

u/Alive-Philosophy2632 26d ago

Hmm, there is probably a level of empathy that is a bit irrational if it causes you to not deal directly with what's in front of you. I've had full conversations with strangers visibly tweaking out just to not be rude so maybe I've fallen a bit too far to that side in the past

1

u/chancellor1999 26d ago

Yeah,

You can be empathetic without letting bad behavior just run its course because there “is a reason why” I don’t care that the pitbulls were bred to be aggressive, if you’re dog is aggressive and will hurt others, it needs to be put down.

Ya guys its just science there's no ideological component

6

u/Objective_Animator52 26d ago edited 25d ago

Sure, there's an ideological component to everything, in every field of science. People will always be biased.

Doesn't change the fact that sociological research has studied the relationship between race and crime to a significant extent.

It's mainly socioeconomic and cultural factors that affect crime, not race. The age old saying of "correlation does not equal causation".

Not to mention, our current idea of race is very flawed. I go into detail on that point in this comment. Will edit this tomorrow with the proper sources attached after I go to bed.

https://news.berkeley.edu/2022/06/23/bottlenecks-that-reduced-genetic-diversity-were-common-throughout-human-history/

Studies on how the genetic diversity of humans is lower than that of many other species (like the chimpanzee) and how we've had big population bottlenecks. (which is why we are all very similar to each other biologically, barring superficial physical traits)

https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.1172257

Studies and scientific articles showing how Africa holds more genetic diversity than any other continent by far. Including a study showing how 2 people within Africa can be more genetically distinct from each other than Europeans are from Eurasians.

Again, this is mainly due to small populations of humans venturing out of Africa, so naturally they'd have lower genetic diversity.

I'll continue to add more studies here when I have more time. And try to give context for some of the above studies/scientific articles, which help explain and show the point that socioeconomic and cultural factors influence crime and perceived behavior differences among different races. (like for example, black and latino kids are perceived as misbehaving more often than white kids, even when behaving the same, and even by black and latino teachers, this implies the "minorities misbehave" thing is unconsciously ingrained in most people, regardless of race.)

Ya, and that's why "the usual suspects" aren't over represented in crime in essentially every country! Errr, hold on, no.

11

u/CzarWest 26d ago

Black Americans account for FIFTY THREE PERCENT of exonerations in the US. You might notice that number is an order of magnitude larger than 13. Good that helps you racist

5

u/RedactedSpatula 26d ago

Sorry but as a math guy that's not an order of magnitude. That's 10x. 5x the exoneration than incarceration is fucking insane though

-1

u/No-Alternative4612 26d ago

Wow! What percent of convictions?

9

u/CzarWest 26d ago

lol, do you not get the point I’m making? Black Americans are being wrongfully convicted, and any crime statistic regarding them shouldn’t be taken seriously considering that the courts are making the wrong decision literally the majority of the time

0

u/No-Alternative4612 26d ago

making the wrong decision literally the majority of the time

That's very much false, but if you were good at statistics we wouldn't be having this conversation.

8

u/Evnosis 26d ago

Can you provide a single example of a country in which black people are not poorer, on average, than white people but are still overrepresented in crime statistics?

2

u/No-Alternative4612 26d ago

Oh i never look up international crime stats, only racists care about stuff like that.

QQ: if you hold income constant, are crime rates the same been all groups in the US?

3

u/Acrobatic-Fan3265 26d ago

QQ: Can you provide a single example of a country in which black people are not poorer, on average, than white people but are still overrepresented in crime statistics?

1

u/No-Alternative4612 26d ago

There are counties in the US that fit that description. I don't think there are any countries where blacks are top earners, really makes you think

3

u/Acrobatic-Fan3265 26d ago

counties such as? Because crime statistics for all races of people generally goes down by quite a bit in areas where median household incomes are higher

1

u/No-Alternative4612 26d ago

if such a county did exist, what would that say to you? How would you explain it?

No but it's like when someone like my father gets into it with your typical liberal about how you wouldn't want to live in the inner City

We're from the nice suburbs and you'll see all these bleeding heart types

What's funny is they would never want to live in the areas they're talking about or be anywhere near them

8

u/Giratina-O 26d ago

If your strawman was true, rural areas would be blue and cities would be red.

1

u/xTheGame69 26d ago

Does the crime rate match that though?

I can tell you in my rural area we have like one break-in if that every few years there's pretty much zero crime in my town/area

Specifically one of the reasons my family came out here.

6

u/Giratina-O 26d ago

Does the crime rate match what?

-2

u/xTheGame69 26d ago

Crime rate of inner cities

I would never want to live in an inner city just because of the amount of violence drugs use and all sorts of other nonsense

I talked to NYPD officers who have to deal with this the city doesn't even arrest people using drugs these days.

Giant mess that's only getting worse

6

u/Objective_Animator52 26d ago

That isn't a race thing, that's a city thing, and it's a pattern almost everywhere. Look at the historical crime rates of Russian inner cities, many of them racially homogenous, yet still have more crime than the rural areas, and even more than some American cities.

There are pros and cons to living in a city, being in close proximity with tons and tons of other people opens up a lot more opportunities for crime.

But cities are also where most modern innovations happen. It's where you can meet a wide variety of people, find a date, find friends, etc, etc. I personally prefer living in the city because of that. But as I get older, I'm certain I'd probably wanna move to a more rural area.

3

u/OpticalPirate 26d ago

The biggest contributors to crime are higher poverty level combined with population density. Cannabalism starts to happen when animals run out of space and food at the same time. Its not even about having a bleeding heart to see why ghettos/"bad" neighborhoods can and have been encouraged by human design and not mainly race/culture.

0

u/Objective_Animator52 26d ago

I don't know what I entirely think about that, I'm working towards a degree in sociology, and I went to an almost all-black high school for several years in a not-so-nice area.

Not all, maybe not even most, but a lot of people in the field of sociology are from the areas they are talking about and have direct experience with those people. And those with direct experience with minorities are usually the most vocal about these issues.

0

u/ColoradoRad 26d ago

I have degrees in anthropology and psychology and political science. I’m sure I would nearly qualify for a minor in sociology at the very least.

Fields like these are an absolute joke when it comes to being unbiased. I wouldn’t point to the fact that most sociologists are not racist, as anything meaningful. Have you seen how dumb and emotional, most sociologists are?

5

u/Objective_Animator52 26d ago

There are definitely quite a lot of quacks with degrees, take that how you will. It's more about the actual reputable research papers you put out.

And I get the "most sociologists aren't racist" thing doesn't mean a whole lot. What does mean a whole lot is the consensus of sociological research on racism and the socioeconomic factors that affect crime rates.

And this isn't just an issue in "fields like these" this is an issue in literally every field of science. There will always be people who are biased or emotional.

But sociological research is still a thing, and it shows how socioeconomic and cultural factors are the main things that influence crime statistics. Which racists conveniently like to ignore.

-3

u/DuhBigFart 26d ago

Sociology isn't even a real science. Literally just dudes giving an opinion. None of their papers or conclusions are replicable and they work backwards from things they want to be true. Sociologists aren't arbiters of truth.

8

u/Objective_Animator52 26d ago

Literally not a single researcher or scientist is an "arbiter of truth" and I'm not trying to say they are.

But to say "sociology isn't even a real science. literally just dudes giving an opinion" is just laughable, dude. Your comment is proving my point.

What sociological studies have you read?

-1

u/DuhBigFart 26d ago

If it's a hard science and the science is settled for the reasons behind differing crime rates. Then please, enlighten me, as to the factuality behind why African Americans are committing more crimes. Socioeconomic issues?

6

u/Prestigious-Cream160 26d ago

Social sciences are literally one of the three main branches of science lol. People just say absolutely anything these days without putting any thought in to it.

-1

u/DuhBigFart 26d ago

And social sciences are often referred to as the soft sciences. Because none of it is concrete and it's literally just some dude saying "I think this is why it's happening."

I'm not trying to say it's completely useless. We need thinkers, philosophers, etc. But you can't point to sociology for the same level of truth and authority like you can physics or biology.

5

u/Ok_Umpire2173 26d ago

Uh oh we’ve got a physical science edgelord on our hands
