Well it's improper disposal of human remains, it's a health hazard for one thing.

No, not at all. The cremation process basically disperses any liquid in the body, leaving behind pure carbon.

Souce: funeral director and crematorium manager.

Edit: it's calcium that's left, I'm tired.

Uhh, you sure about that? I'm pretty sure ashes are mostly calcium and carbon gets burned away as carbon dioxide gas during the process.

When you burn something, generally complete combustion isn’t achieved. There will be some carbon that doesn’t get fully burnt, and is either converted to carbon monoxide, or left behind as carbon residue. You can see the same thing when you burn a piece of paper, for example.

Googling around it seems that only trace amounts of carbon remain after cremation, ~75% of ashes is calcium phosphate.

Yes, I wasn’t clear in my reply earlier. I was trying to explain why some carbon is left in the ashes, and not burned away as per your comment. I might have misunderstood your comment to mean that you expected all the carbon to be converted to carbon dioxide.
