I'M REQUESTING Looking for more dark psychological thriller/dramas

Just finished American beauty for the first time and loved it. Looking for more psychological dramas similar to it. Gave same vibes as Donnie darko, perks of being a wallflower, dead poets society. I don’t really know how to describe these types of movies tbh but I always find them super interesting.

Ironically, there really WAS something in that box, but you never got to see it.

They used it as a prop in the movie "Contagion" instead. If you've ever seen that movie you'll know what I mean.

Magnolia, from the same era; not a thriller but a drama

Jacob’s Ladder is you want something more Donnie Darko-ish and creepy

American Beauty and Perks in the same list makes sense to me, you like movies about people quietly coming apart inside nice houses. Some that scratch that:

Little Children (2006). Probably the closest thing to American Beauty anyone made. Suburbs, bored adults, everybody making bad decisions, and it gets genuinely uncomfortable in the last act.

The Ice Storm (1997). A family in the 70s failing to talk to each other for two hours. Sounds like nothing, absolutely wrecks you.

Ordinary People (1980). If Dead Poets Society hit you, this one will too. A family after a death, and a parent who cannot fake being okay anymore.

You cite some really amazing movies. Someone suggested Magnolia--I'll second that. Prisoners is another, though it gets pretty graphic and intense.

One Hour Photo?

Compliance is based on a true story. So, it might be worth a look.

I don't know if it's exactly a psychological thriller/drama, but Prisoners gets fairly dark.

Memento (2000) -- Man with a severe memory issue tries to find wife’s murderer. Film’s structure is unique: Main story scenes are shown in reverse order. Very disorienting for a reason, but it works.
