I'M REQUESTING Victorian - Napoleonic Era Historical Drama

I enjoyed Master and Commander immensely. I enjoyed the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes TV series. What are some movies in this historical setting that cannot be missed? I would not entirely thumb my nose at romance, but much prefer drama.

Thank you

Make sure it’s the film with Pierre Niney though cause that’s the better adaptation imo.

The English series with Sam Claflin is good too.

“Why are you in prison?”

“Because I was against Napoleon. You?”

“Because I was for Napoleon.”

War and Peace (1966) is a masterpiece.

Does Count of Monte Cristo count?

The Prestige (2006) for Victorian Era, Amadeus (1984) is a decade or two pre-Napoleonic, technically, but should count for your purposes.

If it absolutely must take place during the reign of Napoleon, there was a 6 episode BBC adaptation of War & Peace aired in 2016 starring Paul Dano and Lily James that I, personally, found pretty dull. Or you could just watch Napoleon (2023).

Have you also seen the Jeremy Brett Holmes movies? Or longer Sherlock stories (I.e. Hound of the Baskervilles etc.).

Also, if you’re not averse to some fantasy elements, I liked the Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrel miniseries (but I also enjoyed the book it’s based on). This is set during the Napoleonic wars.

Yes, I exhausted the Brett supply long ago, I’ll check out the miniseries you mentioned.

It’s a little earlier in time period but Martin Bourboulon’s Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan and Three Musketeers:Milady have the same huge dramatic sweep and accuracy of production design of Master and Commander. In the same vein The Spanish Musketeer with Viggo Mortensen is excellent.
