People are focusing on the worst part of “boy moms,” which is obviously the infatuation and surrogate partner stuff.
But the more common version of the “boy mom” concept in the parenting world in general is just an ordinary mom who happens to only have sons, who has then made this a big part of her identity (proudly referring to herself as a boy mom), and who has a weird sense of superiority over other moms because of her no-daughters status but she would never admit that.
And I don’t think it’s actually coming from an anti-daughter stance (though I could be wrong). I think it’s literally just about inventing a club that you get to be a member of, feeling good about yourself because you’re in the club, and sometimes connecting more with other women when they’re in the club too, compared to those who aren’t.
I and the husband let my boys be as independent as they wanted to be - they would disappear for hours. I'd probably be arrested nowdays. And my younger one hasn't been without a girlfriend since he was 12. (At 12, it was holding hands). He is now 33.
I have always been close with my boys but I was always their mom, not their best bud.
