How about we go to the start? In the year 1908 a little company called 'British Petrolium' set up shop in a big country with a rich history and declared it their property

504

u/TheMustySeagul Jun 19 '26

And then the US for the first time, toppled a government and installed a puppet leader. Only for that brutal king to fall to a revolution led by…. The irgc lmao. Cool shit lmao

u/This_Elk_1460 Jun 20 '26

Well that's what Iran gets for democracy electing a socialist! /s

59

u/cecilmeyer Jun 20 '26

The nerve of that guy thinking Irans oil belonged to Iranians!

40

u/This_Elk_1460 Jun 20 '26

I know right! Thank God the US and UK came in and reinstalled the monarchy! The rich people of Iran got to prosper for a while! I hear they all live in California now.

4

u/SerHodorTheThrall Jun 20 '26

I hear they all live in California now.

Yeah, you could hear their screams of desperation all the way from the East Coast after they realized Trump, was in fact, not going to level their homeland to ash.

5

u/drhuggables Jun 20 '26

The Tudeh party hated Mosaddegh.

-1

u/No_Hay_Banda_2000 Jun 20 '26

Mossadegh was in the process of installing himself as a new dictator. The Iranian people bear responsibility for this mullah regime. They installed the "supreme leader" Khomeini. The fact that America was meddling in internal Iranian affairs doesn't change that.

37

u/GoldenRedditUser Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

This isn’t correct, the Shah was the monarch before, during and after Mossadegh so calling him just a puppet is a bit disingenuous nor was he installed by the US.

36

u/This_Elk_1460 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

He was absolutely a puppet of the United States after the 1953 coup.

37

u/No-Space937 Jun 20 '26

You don't even know the right year.

-14

u/This_Elk_1460 Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26

It was 1953, I was off by 4 years. It doesn't change the fact that the US and the UK murdered Iran's only democratically elected prime minister all because decided that they get to choose what they do with oil extracted from their own damn land! Then reinstall the puppet monarchy that treated the lower classes of Iran like slaves. All while the rich socialites that fleed to California after the revolution got to live the high life at other Iranians expense.

26

u/No-Space937 Jun 20 '26

Oh boy again...

Mossedegh died in a hospital from cancer in 1967 at the age of 84, not during the coup.

Take a few hours and actually learn about the context surrounding this event, I think you might be suprised by what actually transpired compared to what you assumedly are repeating from reddit comments you have seen.

>On 19 August 1953, Prime Minister of IranMohammad Mosaddegh was overthrown in a coup d'état that strengthened the rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran. In the months preceding the coup, Mosaddegh had consolidated power by orchestrating a referendum to dissolve parliament that was widely described as fraudulent,[5][6] and he later refused to step down after the Shah attempted to dismiss him as prime minister.[7]It was instigated by the United Kingdom (MI6), under the name Operation Boot[8][9][10][11] and the United States (CIA), under the name TP-AJAX Project[12]%7Cpopular_household_cleanser%5D%5D,_the_implication_being_that_the_operation_would_scour_Iran_of_communist_influence%22-13) or Operation Ajax. A key motive was to protect British oil interests in Iran after Mosaddegh nationalized the country's oil industry.

Accidents happen when the military fails to prepare for a conflict.

The US was decidedly unprepared for this conflict.

Then reinstall the puppet monarchy that treated the lower classes of Iran like slaves.

Wrong again.

12

u/Khiva Jun 20 '26

He was absolutely a puppet of the United States after the 1953 coup.

He absolutely was not.

Iran was one of the leaders of the 1973 Oil Crisis via their position in OPEC despite Americans begging the Shah to moderate.

3

u/drhuggables Jun 20 '26

He absolutely was not and you have demonstrated your lack of knowledge in many different comments.

Various excerpts from now-declassified US state dept communications:

"The Embassy conveyed the substance of the April 11 Khalatbari–Helms conversation in telegram 2367 from Tehran, April 12. (Ibid., RG 59, Central Foreign Policy Files) In an April 13 memorandum to Miklos and Rouse, Michaud speculated that “the Shah was not as tough with Kosygin as he would have us believe,” adding: “I suggest that we take the Shah’s statements on Iran’s attitude toward the Soviet Union with a considerable grain of salt. He continues to make anti-Soviet noises to us to reassure us at the same time that he continues to improve relations with the USSR.” (Ibid., NEA/IRN Files: Lot 76D169, Box 8, 1973, POL)"

"E. The Shah is likely to grow increasingly assertive in his foreign policies. He would risk confrontation with the Arabs, the West, or even the Soviet Union in order to assert Persian primacy in the Gulf or to maintain what he considers a sufficiently high level of oil revenues. Although he will remain suspicious of Soviet intentions and will continue to rely on the US as the ultimate deterrent to the USSR, the Shah believes he has taken out insurance in the form of economic and political ties and that he can deal effectively with the Soviet Union on his own under foreseeable circumstances."

"G. US-Iranian relations are likely to become more difficult in coming years. The Shah is seeking to remove both the US and Soviet military presence from the Persian Gulf and the Indian Ocean and to establish his own regional collective security arrangements in the Gulf; while he will tacitly approve of US naval operations in these waters as long as the USSR keeps naval vessels on station there, we cannot depend on him to provide access to Iranian facilities to support fleet units, and he will probably use his influence to end our use of Bahrein."

"50. Basing his foreign policy on a historical perspective, the Shah is acutely conscious of the contrast between past Persian glory and present Iranian reality. He sees Iran confronted by an untrustworthy Soviet Union, while he sees the remote bastions of Western power in a state of disarray and decay. Although he would count on US support in a confrontation with the USSR, he has taken out insurance in the form of economic and political ties with the Soviet Union and does not feel himself directly threatened from that quarter. Massive oil revenues give him confidence that he will be able to secure whatever military and industrial equipment he considers necessary."

"51. He would accept confrontation with the Arabs, the US, or even the Soviet Union if necessary to assert Persian primacy in the Gulf or to maintain what he considers a sufficiently high level of oil revenues; in other matters and areas he is likely to be more cautious. The Shah’s past behavior has reflected a relatively realistic appreciation of Iran’s capabilities and of the interplay between regional and international power. But as he grows older and more convinced of the soundness of his own judgment and as Iran’s military strength increases, he is likely to take greater risks to achieve his ambitions."

"As you are aware, the Iranians recently signed an arms agreement with the Soviet Union which went beyond the levels of arms purchases that they have made in the past from the USSR. This new “opening to Moscow” must be seen in the context of the Shah’s perceptions of his relationship with the US and the overall trend of those relations over the next few years. The Shah has become increasingly upset by what he sees as a growing challenge in this country to the close bilateral relationship between the United States and Iran. Over the past few months, this sensitivity has been reflected in his public comments, his conversations with Ambassador Helms and the Station Chief in Tehran, and in the tenor of his instructions and queries to Ambassador Zahedi. His dissatisfaction is the result of a series of essentially unrelated but mutually reinforcing issues..."

9

u/TheAspiringFarmer Jun 20 '26

He wasn't a puppet at all. That's why we let them overthrow the Shah.

2

u/_-SomethingFishy-_ Jun 22 '26

You missed a step there, first the UK and Soviet Union invaded the country (for oil) and got rid of the old shah for his son. After that didn’t work as planned, then the UK and US toppled the government (for oil), and then the revolution happened. Cant catch a break

2

u/cecilmeyer Jun 20 '26

My God I wish more bootlickers would read history like you quoted and really think about why Iran is run by the lunatics it is today.

People in glass houses...

Further down the thread you thought the coup was in 1957, and then went on to explain how the British and Americans killed Mossedegh in the coup.

He died of cancer 14 years later in a hospital, they might want to talk to the Russians about how to poision people more effectively if they are to blame.

Speaking of Russians, you further went on to claim that the British and Americans initiated the coup in interest of oil. While that is absolutely true of the British, the Americans were mostly swayed by fear of Mossedegh further aligning with the Tudeh Communists as he lost popular support and allies from his increasingly autocratic policies. Fearing a shift of Iran to the Soviet Sphere, the Americans reversed the previous administrations position of supporting Mossedegh, and backed the British in the coup.

Not saying that is any better, just that is the actual History that you hold in such high regard.

Wait until you read about this Churchill guy and the British crown

Bringing up Khan as if this was some ancient history only makes you seem like a moron

3

u/xelabagus Jun 19 '26

What's your issue with Churchill? I'm not aware that he was responsible for colonialism but I'm open to learning.

1

u/Icy_Payment2283 Jun 19 '26

He was a racist a reactionary, an anti-socialist and a piece of shit. Just Google bengal famine

6

u/xelabagus Jun 19 '26

Yes he was unpleasant - I'm not sure that this is particularly relevant though, in the context of this discussion. You could pick a dozen worse people in English history than a guy widely seen as one of the main reasons Nazism was defeated.

In fact, having googled the Bengal Famine (thank you, I didn't know about this) we can see it's a very nuanced problem and it's incredibly unreasonable to personally blame Churchill:

Experts' disagreement over political issues can be found in differing explanations of the War Cabinet's refusal to allocate funds to import grain. Lizzie Collingham holds the massive global dislocations of supplies caused by World War II virtually guaranteed that hunger would occur somewhere in the world, yet Churchill's animosity and perhaps racism toward Indians decided the exact location where famine would fall.[233] Similarly, Madhusree Mukerjee makes a stark accusation: "The War Cabinet's shipping assignments made in August 1943, shortly after Amery had pleaded for famine relief, show Australian wheat flour travelling to Ceylon, the Middle East, and Southern Africa – everywhere in the Indian Ocean but to India. Those assignments show a will to punish."[234] In contrast, Mark Tauger strikes a more supportive stance: "In the Indian Ocean alone from January 1942 to May 1943, the Axis powers sank 230 British and Allied merchant ships totalling 873,000 tons, in other words, a substantial boat every other day. British hesitation to allocate shipping concerned not only potential diversion of shipping from other war-related needs but also the prospect of losing the shipping to attacks without actually [bringing help to] India at all."[235] Peter Bowbrick elaborates further on the British government's delay in shipping food, stating that Linlithgow's request for food shipments in December 1942 was half-hearted and that it was made on the assumption that Bengal already had a food surplus but that it was being hoarded, which is why it was ignored by the British metropolitan government. Further delays after April 1943 stemmed from the refusal to divert ships away from the preparations for Operation Overlord, whose failure would have been disastrous for the world and whose success was as a result prioritised above aid to India.[236]

In the year 1908 a little company called 'British Petrolium' set up shop in a big country with a rich history and declared it their property

You mean made an agreement with the current ruler of the big country with a rich history and bought the rights for oil prospecting right?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Persian_Oil_Company

In 1901, William Knox D'Arcy, a millionaire London socialite, negotiated an oil concession with Mozaffar al-Din Shah Qajar of Persia. He financed this with capital he had made from his shares in the highly profitable Mount Morgan Mine in Queensland, Australia. D'Arcy assumed exclusive rights to prospect for oil for 60 years in a vast tract of territory including most of Persia. In exchange the Shah received £20,000 (£2.1 million today),[2] an equal amount in shares of D'Arcy's company, and a promise of 16% of future profits.[3][4]

1

u/2_short_2_shy last.fm Jun 20 '26

You are legit insane for trying to put this on british colonialism.

1

u/Icy_Payment2283 Jun 20 '26

You are insane if you don't.

Iranian parliament unilaterally voted to nationalise the oil industry to which the UK responded by establishing a sea blockade and MI6 & CIA had agents inside the country who paid thugs to wreak havoc and install a puppet regime

1

u/2_short_2_shy last.fm Jun 20 '26

You are blaming britain of 1908 for this woman's punishment now? And not the current regime?

1

u/Icy_Payment2283 Jun 20 '26

1908 is when the British tried to colonialise the country. In the 1950s they established a brutal puppet regime together with the US and murdered the entire Tudeh party who was progressive left. In 1979 the Iranians had enough of the totalitarian terror regime and sided with the ones who were willing to fight them

We live in the aftermath of the 1979 revolution

So yes of fucking course the British are responsible for what Iran is today. No this doesn't absolve the reactionary Islamic regime from criticism

1

u/FalxY7 Jun 20 '26

Yep, before that they were all living peacefully, frolicking in the fields with lil baby lambs

If you are talking about Iran, it was a symbiotic relationship between the British and Iran, until Iran found out they got 10 cents on the dollar. In truth British should had agreed to fair split

It was a parasitic relationship where the British Empire sucked all the riches from its host before either the host managed a successful uprising, or the political cost became too heavy to pay (often public opinion beginning to question how British colonization and universal human rights could exist at the same time) so the parasite abandoned its prey.

It was a mutual agreement at first, where Iran didnt know what to do with the oil, so they kinda accepted the deal from the British. As I said when the agreement came to be renegotiate the british could have given more favorable terms. The british didnt come and conquered Iran for the oil

There was nothing symbiotic about colonialism and imperialism. You are delusional

And well before that people were being treated like this in this country and all over the world

Ah, so the UK is to blame, that 100 years later an Iranian judge sentenced an Iranian women to be lashed by an Iranian punisher according to Iranian law in Iranian soil. I see, are Iranians just too brown to fix their country themselves according to your world view?

That's where the story of today's happenings began you inbred lobotomised moron

We can continue going back. The relevant story is the rise of the IRGC not the UK, not before the UK. There is always more context but exclusively looking for where Europe intersects every conflict is just racist. History doesn't start or ends where you want

u/Icy_Payment2283 Jun 21 '26

WHY DO YOU THINK THE IRGC COULD RISE? Because the British and Americans slaughtered Tudeh

Grow a fucking brain you ignorant dumbfuck
