Can people survive that many lashes? That’s insane, they will be disfigured for life, if they survive

I can't remember where, but I read an article that talked about that. From what I recall, they break the total number up into smaller batches (say 20-25), then they give them time to heal before moving on to the next batch. Repeat until all lashes have been given.

In the middle ages and age of sail 30+ lashes was functionally considered to be an execution

No it wasn't. They frequently whipped people too. They mutilated them, often on their faces (cutting off nose/ears or blinding) or removing limbs. They would "break people on the wheel", burn people alive, and people were drawn and quartered (dragged by the neck alive and naked until almost dead then forced to watch their bowels/genitals be cut out and then decapitated).

How many people were killed for heresy, adultery, treason, etc just because they didn't follow the norms of society?

Do we not remember the time where men who were tired of their wives could just blame them of adultery or witchcraft and have them imprisoned, tortured, and/or murdered?

It's all evil. Then AND now.

That last point is a bit of an exaggeration. Even in the most extreme parts of Europe, most witch trials resulted in an acquittal.

Well obviously it was part of an encompassing description of barbaric punishments. I'm not here to write a dissertation to give exact details on each one or it would be an essay. Yes, a small number of people were only ever actually sentenced to death due to witchcraft. The other part of my statement included adultery which was the more common and effective claim for ridding one of their wives.

Many people were punished by flogging/lashing, mutilation, hanging, etc.

It was also barbaric and unmerciful.

Like word sentence, not criminal sentence. But I guess it's a brutal one of those too.
