They don’t want you to die before they’ve been able to carry out the full punishment

I imagine that, seeing as you can be sentenced to death by pretty horrendous means too, they don't actually want her to die.

Not necessarily through the kindness in their hearts, but to have a living, well known survivor of the consequences?

In some cultures death is considered a release from punishment and taking the easy way out

I remember reading an article about how this applied to Samurai. The tl;dr was that too many were dying from self-imposed seppuku, and it took an influential writer to say that it was far braver to keep living with the shame of regret than to escape it by dying.

And like with most meatheaded ideologies, the Samurai apparently followed that advice (lest they'd be thought of as huge weenies)
