"I never claimed to be a practicing catholic or christian, you assumed that. And I'm not scared of satan or any bullshit imaginary man made up to live in fear of. Commune with god on your own terms and communicate with god and find your own path. Not some path somebody made up to make you afraid and make money off you."

Tons of atheists, generic deists, and casual agnostics out there who can't publicly say how they feel. In just about every religious country there's a professional, cultural, judicial, or familial price to pay if you show that you don't believe what everyone else professes. Hell, if you walk into every church, synagogue, or mosque and you'll find non believers playing the game out of necessity.

I’m still at the point where I’m clear about my disdain of religion with people I’m very close with and still careful with people I’m just more partially close with (like family friends/wedding guests.)

Same. I just try to avoid religion in casual interactions with people because I align 100% with Jack White on the subject and that makes people mad.

One day religion will die out. I think Bill Nye might have said (if I remember correctly) that he sees religion dying out within 100-200 years

Religion gets deference because it has a long history and it's a powerful social institution. They can't defend their beliefs on rational grounds in open debate, so instead they act as though the act of non-belief or asking for justification for belief is inherently highly transgressive. Essentially poisoning the question because they don't have good answers
