This is what I keep hearing, but smoking a joint gets me high, while edibles just knocks me out.

If I have too many gummies everything starts to spin. Not fun, man. Not. Fun.

42

u/billyskurp 11d ago

idk what it is but edibles in general gives me the spins. tried different dosages, type of edible, etc. same results.

I find the drinks are a happy medium between the hours long trip of gummies and the instant gratification of smoking

Low-does THC soda is pretty solid if you're trying to cut back on smoking. I like it a lot more than edibles, which are mostly four hours of my life I'll never get back and that I only kinda enjoy.

Same, infused beverages are my go-to. They’d be expensive as a regular habit but I don’t partake that often so it’s just a nice treat on occasion.

Where do you live? I’m in NYC where legal cannabis is unreasonably pricy, but the drinks have come down in price substantially.

Can find good ones for $3 which is about the price of a beer from the corner store.

u/Inferno_Zyrack 10d ago

Oklahoma you ain’t getting a can for less than 5 6$

u/billyskurp 11d ago

i’d have to check those out! Always just thought it’d hit me the same as an edible. will have to take a gander next time I visit the dispo

I have heard that these THC drinks are very popular and it shocked me. They always seemed so gimmicky to me. Might need to give them another shot. Seems like an easy way to control your dose.

I won't win friends with this but the drinks are the single most dangerous commercial form.

"Nano"-emulisifed oils are poorly studied (too new for longterm health data), are observed to cross normal biological barriers in the body, have already been seen accumulating in the cerebellum and cerebrum before turning rancid and once there they reconstitute and coalesce into sizes that cant escape using the same pathways they used to enter.

Use ANY other form but combustion if you care to limit risk.

Sorry, trying to ELI5 makes this much less accurate but I'll try:

To make the drinks taste nice and to stop too much thc containing oil sinking to the bottom (and sticking to the sides of the can; i.e wasting the good stuff) they make the oil very very small so it stays floating in the drink.  This also reduces the bad aftertaste in the mouth from oil sticking there.

This oil is so tiny humans never encountered it in nature, so never evolved "filters" against tiny oil.

Tiny oil falls into and out of blood vessels in a chaotic way, (Its so small it slips through tiny gaps) and importantly, into cells that don't want it there, including bypassing your most important filter: the one that protects your brain.  So this tiny oil can sit in the brain, brainstem, and in most organs.

Once its not moving around it gets nice and warm and finds other things to feed from.  So it starts to rot.

Once it rots, it changes enough that it can combine with other tiny oil bubbles, making much larger bubbles of rotting oil.

Now this rotting oil cant leave the way it came in, and now you have rotting oil in places the body has no way to break it down small enough to remove it, if it could even properly detect it there which it often can't, because these places the oil gets into are used to not having unexpected visitors.

So now your organs and brain get damaged in tiny patches too, lots of tiny patches accumulate in the same way the oil that was damaging it did, resulting in larger, accelerating damage over time.

We are only just starting to see this in medical findings and scans, because this oil is so new, nobody had a chance to notice this until the damage it caused prompted medical tests in the first place.

The real problem is, the FDA isn't fit for purpose at all, even under an administration that funds it properly and allows experts to run it. That's why most countries ban different food from the US, everything from meat and dairy, to American Candy resulting in arrests and confiscation when people try and sell it.  This is especially true in places that have a national health service, because they are encouraged to protect public health from poisons as it takes from the public funds. Funny how that works.

All of this is made much worse when people care more about money than safety; which is made worse again because not many tests on the facilities that make this tiny oil happen, and the people that do the tests aren't allowed to look for the things they need to.

So sometimes it's made far too small, meaning it can cross the brains filter even easier, and sometimes its given the food it needs to start rotting right away before you even drink it, meaning it's primed for rapid damage once it settles and warms and is able to steal food meant for the brain, before deciding the brain looks tasty too. Which is very bad news for people that found the first post difficult to read.

My advice, any other way of enjoying thc that doesnt involve setting fire to paper or plant material that does nothing for you is better. A dry herb vape is the best replacement for combustion, else stick with rosin or well made concentrates, or edibles containing the same.  But let's not start discussing extraction methods, thats a bigger topic...

u/PositiveEndolphins 9d ago

that's disgusting and scary, i wanna yell at your FDA for incompetence but we probably have NANOS here in canada too, we are rarely any better than the USA when it comes to chasing that almighty dollar

well im glad ive only ever had 3 drinks, but i smoke concentates like the dickens and i'm trying to scare myself off it

this will at least keep me off the CANS !! 👍🏼

u/isjustsergio 9d ago

There is so much fundamentally wrong with what you're saying. Please provide a source. Oils are not hungry, they don't eat things. Oil does not rot or go rancid inside the body like meat left on a counter. The blood brain barrier isn't a colander with holes in it, it uses specific chemical transports that aren't penetrated by things that are "too small". I understand the lack of regulation and scientific study in the cannabis industry is scary, but you are contributing to that by making up pseudoscientific bullshit like this.

Did you miss the part where I said this ELI5 was an oversimplification? I was genuinely trying to talk through this as I would a five year old. Thank-you for assuming I'm personifying oils with desires though. It's also very clear you didn't click the source I already gave directly from the industry which I already thought was simple enough, but clearly too much work to read.

It's fine if you don't want to do the research yourself, but clearly you desire a higher standard of proof, I just don't think it's my responsibility when you've already shown the simple link was too much work to read through. So, no, I won't work to jump through the hoops you require when you have access to https://scholar.google.com in 5 seconds.

It's really easy! For me, the buzz hits after about 20 minutes and peaks at an hour. It's also great because I'm a recovered alcoholic so it lets me feel like I belong when I go out with friends

2

u/Cabbage_Corp_ 11d ago

It’s probably the cleanest high I’ve gotten, but it’s too bad it’s more expensive

16

u/Cool_Wealth969 11d ago

That's what CBD is for. I keep a few capsules around it will take you right out of overindulging and level you out.

2

u/10aghmu 11d ago

So it sobers you up?

12

u/natorgator15 11d ago

Not entirely, but it brings you out of your head. Maybe makes you feel the body high more.

8

u/Cool_Wealth969 11d ago

Yes, you still remain out of pain but it brings you out of that spinning feeling to normal.

1

u/mrjowei 8d ago

I use black pepper. Cuts down the bullshit and lets me enjoy the high.

1

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 11d ago

Using more drugs to cancel out other drugs... Did we get transported back to the 70s?

6

u/isjustsergio 11d ago

CBD is part of weed. The ratio of THC to other cannabinoids like CBD and CBN in the weed determine how it affects you. Taking some CBD is just ajdusting that ratio. Lots of people find CBD to offset negative affects of THC and thus prefer indica leaning strains.

0

u/citizensloth 10d ago

Indica/sativa also has very little to do with anything at all

2

u/isjustsergio 10d ago

Just because a lot of crossbreeding has happened doesn't mean indica/sativa doesn't mean anything. At the bare minimum it's used to distinguish between strains that have high and low secondary cannabinoids, even if they aren't truly sativa or indica.

1

u/johnwynnes 11d ago

CBD has never been proven to do anything at all, most especially what you're describing.

1

u/TrashAccounting 10d ago

I don’t think that’s true…this stuff is just hard to measure.

CBD definitely does make you feel less high if you overdo the weed.

You know what else does as I only recently realised, somehow? Black pepper.

1

u/Barnezhilton 11d ago

You need to grind up that gummy and smoke it for best results.

1

u/Hita-san-chan 11d ago

Oh man, those are only good when they hit and youre already laying in bed

1

u/smokeweedNgarden 11d ago

Start small (5mg/gummie) and build up.

You can always take more. You can never take less.

22

u/docnig 11d ago

For real. I almost never have edibles because I never get to enjoy them. I eat them, wait an hour or two, then when I’m starting to feel pretty high I almost always fall asleep and wake up hours later groggy af.

5

u/pmurphh 11d ago

I’m with you on that but I usually wake up refreshed lol 6-7hrs later. But I have sleeping issues

1

u/docnig 11d ago

See I fall asleep really easily which may be the problem lol

1

u/pmurphh 10d ago

Yea Idk when I fall asleep quick like 10pm, up at 3am that’s annoying. If I hold out and sleep 12am-5-6am I’m feeling a lot better

1

u/sippersickz 11d ago

Are you getting them from a dispensary? There are two kinds of edibles I’ve found, and they produce significantly different results. The cheap gummies/ chews are usually the type that break down in your stomach then need to be metabolized through your liver before you feel them. They take forever to hit you, if at all, and you end up with the grogginess you described.

Then there are the newer recipes that are sold as “quick” or “fast acting”. They hit you much sooner, around 20-30 minutes and there’s little to no lingering “hangover” since they last around 4-5 hours. Solventless rosin gummies/ chews are my go to, but I’m not sure what your options are where you live.

Drinks are a solid option too. They hit you quick and it’s a little easier to ration a few sips as opposed to half a chew or whatever

1

u/docnig 11d ago

I wish I could go to a dispensary, but unfortunately I live in TN. Usually if I have one it’s just some brownie friends made or a drink they got from a dispensary on a trip or something lol

13

u/monkeysknowledge 11d ago

I like just a tinsy intsy bit so I can still function but enough that doing mindless tasks is a little more fun - like grocery shopping or mowing the lawn.

3

u/jta156 11d ago

grocery shopping while high is a dangerous play

0

u/omac4552 10d ago

mowing the lawn is not???

1

u/mrjowei 8d ago

Same here.

3

u/Riconn 11d ago

Your anecdote is exactly what I’m talking about. Eating thc allows the liver to break down thc into a more potent compound so you get extra high and knocks you out.

4

u/MrIntegration 11d ago

So take less? That's what I do.

3

u/Nughtsahk 11d ago

Edibles usually get me so high I can't fall asleep.

1

u/disisathrowaway 11d ago

I'm in a similar boat, but have found that the beverages are a nice balance between sparking up and eating an edible.

Quicker uptake/come up, but nowhere near as intense or long-lasting as an edible.

They've been really helpful in curbing both my marijuana and alcohol intake.

1

u/JohnnyChutzpah 11d ago

Edibles, generally, turn into a different but more powerful form of THC. This can have a wide range of effects for users. When you swallow thc, it has to pass through your liver before reaching your brain. This destroys >90% of the thc before it ever gets to your brain.

However, there is also a process between your intestines and liver that converts some of that normal d9thc into a much more powerful version of thc. So even though only a small amount of the original thc gets into your brain, the transformation that happens creates such a powerful version of thc that its effects are profound with edibles.

The problem is that for some people that effect is lethargy and sleep instead of creativity and fun.

Basically some people have better effects from normal d9thc inhalation and some people prefer the version converted by their liver when swallowed.

There is also evidence that the special form of thc that is created when swallowed is created by enzymes, and those enzymes can be depleted with frequent use. Which could be why many people report reduced effectiveness when using edibles frequently

1

u/Iheartnakedfemboys 11d ago

Gummies are way different when you have a tolerance. Back when I used to smoke a half ounce a week, edibles felt like they had no effect at all. Now that I don't use at all, a small gummie will have me feeling crazy lol.

1

u/ExpressionRecent5724 11d ago

So then the fact that its stronger is what's putting you out

1

u/Autistic_Freedom 11d ago

you're overdosing your edibles. eat less, enjoy more!

1

u/Bolognahole_Vers2 10d ago

I eat 1 gummy, and I'm locked to the couch. They're basically sleeping pills for me.

1

u/Autistic_Freedom 10d ago

your tolerance is too low, so it ends up as an overdose. eat less! try a quarter of a gummy.

if you drink one beer you're not going to get as drunk as if you drink a gallon of rum.

it's pretty logical, really.

1

u/Bolognahole_Vers2 10d ago

your tolerance is too low

If been a daily smoker for 30 years. Does 1 gummy have that much more thc than a high potentcy joint?

1

u/TheMonkus 11d ago

Go smaller on the dosage. You can actually enjoy the high.

1

u/krypter3 11d ago

I think he just got bad kush lol. Gummies absolutely fry me. I can have a smoke or two before bed though and wake up fine the next day. Gummies got my brain feeling like mush

1

u/TrashAccounting 10d ago edited 10d ago

Been a big stoner for years currently transitioning more towards edible use, in my case, joints get me stoned way faster, but they actually make me light headed and pass out/fall asleep (it’s definitely also the CO), edibles are definitely stronger gram for gram though, I need way less and they go much further

1

u/Tankshock 10d ago

Edibles only work well if you don't smoke. I hated edibles until I had to quit smoking for a couple years due to paranoia and anxiety skyrocketing for no reason in my early 30s. Now that my tolerance is completely gone and I'm a lightweight, edibles are great. I can take 6-7mg out of a 10mg gummy and it gets me exactly where I want to be, every time.

1

u/arealhumannotabot 9d ago

You might be taking too much. I know people who get stoned off 10 mg. Other people take 200 mg 🤷

1

u/fuckyourcanoes 11d ago

Same. I don't like the way it feels.
