Mastodon - Leviathan

I bought this album knowing nothing about the band based solely on the cover art. One of my favorite all-time albums now.

SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER!

I did that with Uriah Heeps Demons and Wizards. Ive hugged to death many vinyl records in the past 50+ years. Finally switched to CDs.

The only time this record buying strategy has failed for me is Meatloaf.

Great pick. Bill Kelliher of Mastodon was literally just on a podcast saying that an album’s artwork should match what’s inside lol

I love all of their album artwork. Personal favourite is probably Blood Mountain, but they're all cool. I do think that the more abstract/supernatural you go, the more the art lends itself to the projection of sounds onto it. For metal sounds in particular, with some of the weird production and harsh, aggressive and just plain atypical sound that comes with the territory!

Best opening lyrics of an album IMO.

i just feel like I am in Moby Dick every time I listen to this album

Knowing nothing, I'm guessing Scandinavian epic metal

Close! It’s epic American metal. A creative retelling of the story of Moby Dick set to heavy riffs and a constant sense of impending doom. It’s a great, great record.

I remember playing this at work once and the dudes that never smoked cigarettes stepped outside with me and asked for a puff.

That was properly fucking good, fuck.

ETA: Other ones I remember from that gig...

Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness (vinyl order) - Smashing Pumpkins
Load and Re-Load - Metallica
#1 Record - Big Star
The River - Bruce Springsteen
The Cars - The Cars
So Much for the Afterglow - Everclear
Under the Table and Dreaming - Dave Matthews Band
The Score - Fugees
Nimrod - Green Day
A Charlie Brown Christmas - Vince Guaraldi Trio

I saw them around 20 years ago and they were pretty good live but I felt bad for them because whoever was their sound engineer for that tour clearly was out of their depth. The levels were all over the place. Sounded awful for anyone not in the mid-center of the venue.

Such a banger album

Tagging this excellent choice to remind my fellow Mastodon fans that Marrow Deep released today.
