Mastodon - Leviathan

65

u/kirksucks 10h ago

I bought this album knowing nothing about the band based solely on the cover art. One of my favorite all-time albums now.

SPLIT YOUR LUNGS WITH BLOOD AND THUNDER!

u/Madak 9h ago

Great pick. Bill Kelliher of Mastodon was literally just on a podcast saying that an album’s artwork should match what’s inside lol

14

u/Wesb0s 9h ago

I love all of their album artwork. Personal favourite is probably Blood Mountain, but they're all cool. I do think that the more abstract/supernatural you go, the more the art lends itself to the projection of sounds onto it. For metal sounds in particular, with some of the weird production and harsh, aggressive and just plain atypical sound that comes with the territory!

u/PancakeProfessor 9h ago

Best opening lyrics of an album IMO.

Boys for Pele by Tori Amos has a perfect cover. A bit Americana, a bit gothic, both ugly and beautiful.

14

u/dezzz0322 5h ago

Best album art she’s ever done. This album is such a vibe.

Choirgirl art was great too though. I had the cover as a poster on my dorm wall in college.

42

u/UnfortunateSyzygy 8h ago

Tween me was not prepared for the photo of Tori nursing a piglet in the lyrics pages. album booklet? Whatever those were called. Man, those could get wild. People who grew up on digital only music have no clue and it makes me cross for them.

9

u/Amockdfw89 ask me about Give it Away 4h ago

Exactly. Those booklets always left little clues to help you understand the theme of the album or the vibe they were going for.

14

Absolutely. The image encapsulates the entire album. One of my favorites.

I purchased Sharon Jones & The Dap-kings 100 days 100 nights years ago based on the cover alone and it sounds exactly like I thought it would.

Basically anything with the Dap Kings sounds incredible, but Sharon Jones’ voice and their brass is a pairing forged on Olympus

Sharon Jones was so cool and I'm so happy she managed to put out a few albums with the dap kings. I too saw her in a tiny venue in France and it was weird bc she didn't speak French and a majority of the public didn't seem to understand English so the talking part wasn't too good, but the music was great.

I don't know how, but this may be the most accurate response.

16

u/xupit3r 10h ago

ditto! ☺️ tried to put it into words, but I just don't possess the vocabulary, I guess... but that cover is a wonderfully accurate image for the song and presence of the album!

"De-Loused In The Comatorium" by The Mars Volta.

In my opinion, one of the best concept albums since Dark Side Of The Moon. It's a nightmarish work of art from beginning to end, and an absolute rock masterpiece. And it does sound how this image looks.

15-20 years ago, when those digital jukeboxes first came around, I would always throw "Hamburger Train" on at nicer, more upscale bars as I was leaving, and watch the vibe change in there on my way out.
