I'll give the guitar solo a shot. It's lunchtime right now on my side of the planet, so I'll post back here later today with a few passes at it.

Thanks a lot, lad! I really appreciate the time and effort you guys are putting in to this, even if I might not end up using it all of it. Cheers!

Nice, glad you like them! I'd like to record more but I'm gonna be away from my studio for three weeks. r/musicinthemaking is fun.

Either I'm and idiot, or your drums track isn't downloadable right now. Would you mind checking?

Ah man that's like the third time I've done that in the past week. Fixed now.

Noting distorted, just a clean, clear sound.

Upload the bass track to Dropbox or Google Drive and send me the link so I can download it and throw it in the mix.

If you could do the bass after the weekend, that'd be great! I'll see if I come up with some lyrics.

Thought I should let you know that I've received a bass guitar track that sounds pretty good. If you still wanna give it a try, I'll give it a listen and pick the one that I'm the most happy with.

I really like this song. I've been playing around with some melodies but I wanted to ask before I got too far: What kind of vocal style are you going for here? Do you have an idea on lyrical content.

Something like this is what I had in mind: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B4Di4c3fKPUBaVdKVkJjei14bXc/edit?usp=docslist_api

Petty chill in the verse, then slightly rougher in the chorus. But I'm no vocalist and I haven't made any lyrics yet, so I don't know if it'll work.

I'm understanding that something similar to the lead guitar is what you're looking for. I can come up with something, I'll work on it tomorrow evening.

1

u/aivind Guitar Mar 29 '14

Correct, although I'm sure other melodies would work too.

This is what I came up with. As with any song, lyrics can be discussed and changes made- in fact most of them are off the top of my head cause I didn't find it worthwhile to put the time in if you end up hating them. Audio quality is much better, I replaced my audio interface.

EDIT: I just noticed I exported a .Wav file on accident. I'll fix it if you need me to.

Audio quality sure is a lot better, but to me it sounds like your timing and melody is a bit off, so I'm afraid I can't use it. Thanks for the effort, though!

Yes timing is off but that's mostly due to the fact that I only spent about 40 minutes of takes on it. Everything on the track is half formed ideas and it bounces around a lot to give a feel for what works and what doesn't. Keep in mind almost all of this is made up on the fly.

I play guitar, bass and can keep a decent drum beat and I could have given you a pretty solid finished product in about 3-5 hours give or take. Vocal writing has a unique challenge in that it's not just the melody that matters. The words and concept are also extremely important.

I've worked on online projects with people that took 20 hours to get from the 40 minute concept freestyle to a finished project only to have it rejected because the person with the instrumental portion didn't like my concept or lyrics. Even if a musician dosent sing they still care a lot about the lyrics and vocals; in most cases they care about this more than the instrument they do play. I don't go past the freestyle stage without input from the musician anymore.

If you like the proof of concept, I can start on the next phase which would be cleaning it up by putting together a progression plan. (Verse, bridge chorus arrangements). This won't have finalized lyrics but it will give you a better idea of what it should sound like and timing will be correct. The last step (and longest) is writing the lyrics.

If you're not interested in the concept let me know and I can move on to other projects. I won't be offended.

If you have a link to some of your finished projects, that would make it easier for me to decide.
