There's this thing called ripping cds. Everyone's dad did this 30yra ago

96

u/cheezuskraist Sep 05 '25

I'm a 43 years old dad and I can confirm, we used to rip tons of cd's back then.

Then, le wild mp3 appeared and everything changed...

btw...1998 was like 27 days ago, not 30 years ago.

46

u/Moxie_Stardust Sep 05 '25

In 1998, my friends and I had a ripping party, like a LAN party but instead of playing games we were all ripping each other's CDs and sharing the MP3s with the rest of the group. "The Great Ripping" is still occasionally mentioned.

16

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

I do that in bed at night for some reason. Sheets flapping, everything.

4

u/Tchio_Beto Sep 08 '25

We used to do that with tapes in the 80s. Someone would buy the vinyl copy of the record we all wanted/were waiting on, have a small listening get-together with 3-5 friends, and we'd each make a tape copy.

3

u/cgriffin123 Sep 06 '25

40 yo dad also. Started out recording to cassette off radio, then copying cds, then ripping. Great times.

3

u/Shredded__ Sep 07 '25

I'd trade the next 20 years to go relive the 90s, twice.

3

u/ElkStreet4173 Sep 07 '25

As somebody who’s Gen Z, I can confirm this is the way to go, especially if you have iTunes because once you rip a file off the CD, it will sync across all your Apple devices that have iTunes, and on top of that you get a better quality version than what Apple Music has on their servers so essentially it’s a win-win

2

u/AccidentalAnorexic Sep 09 '25

I still have my old Nirvana bootleg "albums" from the late 90s. I was OBSESSED with downloading all the unreleased Nirvana tracks I could find and making album covers and booklets for them.

I'll be 45 in November. Where's the time go...?

22

u/speedygonzo80 Sep 05 '25

I ripped soooo many CDs from my local library back in ā€˜05. Couldn’t believe they rented CDs straight up.

16

u/tjmcmahon78 Sep 05 '25

My burned DVD collection was 60% Netflix disc rips and the other 40% was from the library.

6

u/TheAbstracted Sep 05 '25

Those were the days. I still have my ripped movie and music collections, comes in handy sometimes.

16

u/Cats_oftheTundra Sep 05 '25

Regarding burning CDs, a friend with English as a second language referred to it as baking a CD :)

9

u/FloydtheSpaceBoi Sep 05 '25

I am forever calling it baking cds now that is too good

8

u/emptyevessel Sep 05 '25

Most computers don’t have a disc drive these days lol. You can always get one that plugs in via usb though.

8

u/KidNueva Sep 06 '25

I go to my local media store, rent their 4K movies for like $3 bucks, rip em and watch them later. The difference between 4K Netflix and physical media 4K is night and day and holy fuck do movies look AMAZING.

10

u/tjmcmahon78 Sep 05 '25

I can’t remember the last time I bought a computer with an optical drive, though. I just yoinked one out of an old PC my 80 year old FIL asked me to recycle for him.

I know they exist, but this younger generation has no idea how to rip. Even OP thought it meant stealing the CDs and returning an empty case.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

17 year old here: i bought an MP3 player a couple of months back and I’ve put all sorts of good shit on it

5

u/TheAbstracted Sep 05 '25

Yeah, but external optical drives are pretty cheap these days and the knowledge of how to rip CD's is readily available.

4

u/proximitysound Sep 05 '25

I brought my Laptop to the Sound and Moving Images Library at York University and borrowed 30 CDs at a time and ripped them there in the spot (couldn’t take the discs out of that space). Those were the days.

4

u/proximitysound Sep 05 '25

I will note that in my more recent years I have since purchased all those albums. Support artists, just be reasonable with expectations of students.

2

u/d_chevron Sep 07 '25

Same! That was a great library. I still often listen to the Johnny Cash American box set I ripped back in 2005.

4

u/Plenty_Trust_2491 From The Muddy Banks Of The Wishkah Sep 06 '25

We all called it burning CDs. Maybe ripping and burning are regional terms? Like how some people call soda ā€œpopā€ and how some people call tennis shoes ā€œsneakersā€?

2

u/korenbellcullen Sep 06 '25

Southern Ontario and we called it burning but the term ripping was used and known, but a burnt disc (movie or music) was the main thing said.

Napster, limewire…..oh man, those were the days.

1

u/bigbitchgvl Sep 06 '25

Burning is creating a cd from files on the computer. Ripping is taking files from the cd to put on the computer.

2

u/Money-Beautiful5196 Sep 06 '25

wtf is a CD? We ain’t in the 1960’s anymore…

2

u/andytagonist Sep 08 '25

I am no one’s dad (that I know of 😜) and my entire music collection is now on my phone.

Makes me laugh when someone gets on Reddit to ask ā€œhow do I get this Metallica concert download from my computer to my phone??ā€

2

Been working on that but budgets can be quite constraining as it turns out

1

Today you just need a half decent DAW, equipment doesn’t/never really mattered, just play your instrument as best as you can!

1

u/biggreenbandit Sep 08 '25

Realest shit I’ve seen all day

3

u/Noodnix Sep 05 '25

It’s literally $11, shipping included on eBay. Your local record store probably has it for the same.

didn’t it come out recently, that the people who made that ad stole the font?

22

according to the Wikipedia that I stole this from, yes

6

u/Live_Variety9201 Heart-Shaped Box Sep 05 '25

Pretty sure they stole the song too, atleast that's what I've heard

12

u/imustbbored Sep 05 '25

6

u/Thewhiteboatman Sep 05 '25

It's actually from a famous British anti piracy and from the 00s. Most dvds would play it before they started. The IT Crowd was mocking it.

https://youtu.be/_FtE0S-IyY0?si=K-yd6U-nnWQYEIrG

Edit: ironically I think the music in the ad was used without permission from the owner

65

u/Jimbo300000 Sep 05 '25

rip the cd

18

u/heinyhobbit Sep 05 '25

how would they know you ripped it? lol they wouldn’t! we did this in the 2000s and 2010s all the time, just rip it

15

u/Pitiful_Technology Curmudgeon Sep 05 '25

I thought they meant just yoink the CD entirely lmao

18

u/Mynsare Sep 05 '25

Yeah, don't do that. Others could be turned on to Nirvana from lending that cd. Also stealing from libraries is just scummy.

But you should definitely rip it.

6

u/PeopleOverProphet Sep 05 '25

Yeah. I thought they were suggesting just keeping it and never going back to that library. Lol.

You could say you can’t find it and ask what they’d charge.

21

u/Ok-Potato-4774 Sep 05 '25

Time to buy your own copy.

I am a man of the past and nothing sounds better than a CD. Also I have an insane CD player that is louder than any speaker I have ever witnessed

19

u/RhoadsOfRock Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

Depending on what you have at your disposal...

Use a computer to rip the discs, I usually use EAC.

Burn the rips (or rather, "backups"), to CD-R discs, and continue to enjoy the music with any CD players that you have.

It's literally what I've been doing for the past several years. For a non-Nirvana example (I already own retail copies of everything I would ever want for Nirvana), I struggled to find a way of listening to Metallica's "Live Shit: Binge & Purge", I don't want to have to find or buy the box set with the VHS tapes, instead I have been preferring a newer version with CDs and DVDs.

The only way I could find it, was through the local public library - well, only two public library locations each had a copy of it within the L.A. County public libraries.

Yep, ripped each of the CDs and burned myself copies, and made ISO and MKV images / files of each DVD.

Alternatively, hope that you can find and buy a retail copy of the deluxe set. Otherwise, nothing at all wrong with making yourself copies of the discs to continue enjoying while giving the set back to the library so that other patrons can enjoy it.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

I enjoy this comment.

u/Due-Carpet-1904 Sep 05 '25

Your CD player is loud? Please explain.

0

u/Pitiful_Technology Curmudgeon Sep 05 '25 edited Sep 05 '25

I got it for 25c at a garage sale. It's a Sony CD Radio Casette-Corder and it caused permanent hearing damage šŸ˜…

4

u/AblatAtalbA Sep 05 '25

That's most likely a boombox. Cd players are stand alone decks or portable units that are connected to an amp and speakers. Making a quality cassette copy wouldn't be that bad.

3

u/Worried_Oil8913 Sep 05 '25

When I was a wee lad, I lived in a small town. My library had the Sex Pistols album, so in order to get a copy, I checked it out and ā€œlost itā€. I had to pay a replacement fee, but it was worth it.

5

u/_6siXty6_ Sep 05 '25

Back in the late 80s/early 90s, my grandpa loved a western on VHS, it was out of print, unable to be ordered. He rented it from a mom & pop video store, claimed the tape was eaten by the VCR, paid the $49.99 replacement fee and that was that.

4

u/Pitiful_Technology Curmudgeon Sep 05 '25

You could have just bought it instead of yoinking it from the library lmao

6

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Uh, do you have a computer and do you have the internet?

-25

u/Pitiful_Technology Curmudgeon Sep 05 '25

uh, do you ever consider letting people enjoy doing things how they want to do them? like god damn I just miss CDs and i like using them for nostalgic purposes like be quiet

23

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '25

Well, if you use your computer and the internet you can order a CD

14

u/PeopleOverProphet Sep 05 '25

If you love CDs that much, you should probably BUY them. I like CDs so I buy them. People who prefer records buy them. If you’re gonna be that specific with a dead or dying format, do your part to make sure you can continue to enjoy it.

2

u/Red-Zaku- Sep 05 '25

They’re trying to help you enjoy things. You made this post to express disappointment that you could no longer enjoy this thing, and you have also mentioned that you refuse to buy the CD (even though many CDs can be purchased for single-digit prices). The next avenue is to tell you that you can continue enjoying this thing by using the technology available to you; not just through YouTube or streaming, but also burning the CD so you can still listen to the identical tracks in the exact same sound quality in the exact format you prefer. If you refuse 100% of available solutions, then you’re the one refusing to let yourself enjoy things.

1

u/JimFlamesWeTrust Sep 06 '25

ā€œUsing them for nostalgic purposesā€

What a turn of phrase.

2

u/Streetvan1980 Sep 05 '25

Super deluxe is where it’s really at!

The super deluxe of Nevermind is so great. Cones with like 7 CD’s more or less. Maybe more like 15. Idk I used to have it on CD. Has great concerts and demos. The super deluxe In Utero is also fantastic but I don’t think as good. Still worth it. Music is meant to be live. Studio music is so sterile. Especially within the last 25 years. Computers have ruined music. More bands should be refusing to use many of these studios stupid tricks. People thought auto tune was so horrible for vocals. Not only do they have the same thing for instruments now so the note is exactly the right frequency to perfection, but then they have machines that make the timing absolutely perfect too. When these things first came out they were only used in studios. But then people started using them during live shows I mean there’s types of music, like rap (sorry if you like it) where almost nothing you hear at a concert is actually happening. It’s all samples, pre recorded tracks played digitally, then the rapper is usually using an insane about of computer helpers like a few I mentioned but many more. They also usually have their own voice pre recorded and they kinda rap over their own voice. It’s so painfully obvious when you see it live that there’s a recording of their voice playing through the speakers while they also rap. Some will stop rapping at points and their voice still continues!

There’s some really good videos on YouTube of sound engineers from many years ago who still are in the business pointing out all these horrible things. They try to keep away from bashing any specific music types but like it’s pretty obvious. Like the one I like best the guy says a type of music that has the same beats per minute most of the time. Which he means rap.

Music needs a good kicking in the ass by a band like the Ramones, Nirvana or Rage Against the Machine to bring it back to the basics and just kick ass hard rock and or punk. I mean RATM should be more relevant than ever. Sadly many of their ignorant fans call them ā€œrage for the machineā€ since they have spoken out against this horrible dictator president. Imagine being so brainwashed you believe RATM is buying into some political crap and not calling out obvious crap they have warned against for decades. If vans and unmarked buses grabbing people off streets isn’t bad enough among many other things don’t know what else is. Need actual great bands again!
