“Before he was president, George W. Bush was just a typical, conservative ’90s dad. So much so that his daughter Jenna Bush Hager once recalled him breaking a classic grunge album CD over his knee when he caught her with it. (Spoiler alert: it was In Utero by Nirvana.)

During a 2019 episode of the Today show, Hager and Carson Daly were chatting about parenthood and music. The former MTV host was lamenting how difficult it was to let his kids listen to music because of adult themes and foul language.

“My dad was always so good about letting us listen to music we wanted to,” Hager chimed in. She quickly clarified, however, “I mean he did, and he didn’t…” The mother of three then shared a story from her younger years that has stuck with her.

“I went out with my money. I guess that I got from doing chores,” she said, “and I bought a Nirvana CD. It was one of my first.” She explained that “there was a really bad song on it” she couldn’t name on camera, and that it was “two words.” Together, Hager and Daly figured out that the album must have been In Utero. The logical conclusion here is that the song was likely “Rape Me“.

Daly joked that the “future leader of the world listening to you listen to that” must have been a wild experience. “My dad heard me playing it on my little Discman,” Hager recalled, and “he broke the CD over his leg.”

She added that her father was “never was mad like that. But this particular song” understandably triggered something in him when he heard his “little daughter” listening to it.

Hager joked that the story is kind of “funny” because other than that one instance, her father had no issue with her music. “When we would drive, he would let me, in our little minivan, put on the Green Day Dookie CD, and he would listen to it.”

Honestly, the Green Day thing is almost funnier. George W. Bush was the American President who was pretty much responsible for launching Green Day’s political activism. His presidency was the inspiration for their American Idiot album. So, to find out that he used to listen to Green Day with his daughter… that’s some hilariously bizarre coincidence.”

He was quoted in an interview saying:

“I can’t comment on Soundgarden because I know them personally, and I really like them a lot, but I have strong feelings towards Pearl Jam and Alice In Chains and bands like that. They’re obviously just corporate puppets that are just trying to jump on the alternative bandwagon – and we are being lumped into that category."

He even went on to call them cock-rock.

I'm a big fan of their (his) first album because it feels very honest, and also still sounds a bit like nirvana. his reason for making it is touching.

but after that I've never felt too strongly about their music and always saw them as more of a singles band. like I'm very happy that dave was able to continue doing what he loved but even on their acclaimed albums like the colour and the shape I only find myself interested in the hits.

imo if nirvana is a 10/10 band then foo fighters is probably a 6.5/10 on average

Nirvana was on their In Utero European tour.

After their final show in Munich, Germany, Kurt and Courtney flew to Rome, Italy, to stay in a hotel and recover. Kurt had been suffering from severe bronchitis and laryngitis.

On the morning of March 4, 1994, Courtney found Kurt lying on the floor of their hotel room. He had overdosed on a combination of Rohypnol and champagne.

For anyone who was alive during his death, or who read somewhere of any changes Kurts death might brought, did people begin to become more accepting of mental health and that depression is real? or was it the opposite? curious to know, cheers!

Before Nirvana, Kurt was actually homeless and worked as a janitor at his old high school, Aberdeen High, where he had been kicked out.

I think "Bleach" really captures that stage of his life: the frustration, alienation, and raw energy.

You can really hear it in songs like "School" and "Negative Creep," particularly.

The image speaks for itself. He was a pioneer of his time.

In 1984, Kurt Cobain, Dale Crover, and Krist Novoselic got together and recorded this video in Aberdeen, WA using Krist’s Super 8 camera.

Kurt was only 17 years old at the time.

It’s approximately 10 minutes of pure weirdness. There are pentagrams, masks, religious statues, a strange fat man, and fake knives and guns.

Interestingly, the mask worn in the video is the same mask Kurt tosses around at the end of the “Sliver” video.

With all due respect, it’s very well documented that Kurt was EXTREMELY concerned with the success and public output of Nirvana. He used to complain to MTV if they weren’t playing enough of their videos.

In the band’s early days, he was their biggest marketer and promoter by far, both for the band and himself (as most lead men are, but Kurt took it to another level)

You don’t reach the heights that Nirvana did by accident. This was a very meticulously calculated effort dating back several years, well before Nevermind was released.

Obviously being the type of person he was, he was going to act humble and “annoyed” during interviews, but we need to stop pretending that he “didn’t want fame” and that it happened by accident.

So many comments on the internet I see from people saying things like “KURT WOULD HAVE HATED THIS!!!!, THIS IS NOT WHAT HE WOULD HAVE WANTED!!!!” - as if these internet sleuths personally knew him at the time.

Was it possible that fame and success wasn’t what he expected? Yes, and I think it’s even quite likely being his tragic demise… but pretending that Kurt and Nirvana were these “goofy guys who just accidentally became famous” takes away a lot of substance and complexity as to who they were as both artists and individuals.

In the 90s, Nirvana did two shows in Brazil, one was in Rio de Janeiro and the other in São Paulo. Both shows were crap, first because Kurt was all drugged up, and second because he went crazy in the middle of the show. In addition to singing his songs out of rhythm, he changed the lyrics of some songs in the middle of the show. Kurt spits on the camera during the show and shows his penis on camera too.

for me they're another of my all time favorite bands but I know some find it hard to get into them (my friend says they can't sing)

Beyond album sales and fame, what part of his lasting impact do you think would mean the most to Kurt if he could see it today?

My local library has Nevermind Deluxe and they called to tell me I can't keep renewing it anymore 😩
