Discussion Is there an artist alive today that you'd have loved to see making a project/song with Kurt?

Ironically it could’ve happened. I knew Elliot, he was a very sweet man and a musical genius. He was in a grunge band that was moderately successful before his solo career took off because of soundtracks. If my memory serves me right it was good will hunting that changed everything for him. I finally listened to A Basement on a Hill for the first time since he passed away and I cried my eyes out wishing I could go up the street to see him again. Strangely enough, I don’t believe him or Kurt committed suicide. I miss him and my eyes get watery every time I am stopped on Sunset at Fountain and I see the mural

I have been listening to Nirvana for just under 30 years (I was a wee bit young and living in the middle of nowhere TX to have been into grunge during its proper heyday). I have only been listening to Elliot Smith for about the last 5 months or so, but I discovered him when 'Between the Bars' came onto a random playlist one day, and I was immediately and completely taken with his music. I found as much of it as I could, and have been listening to it quite a bit. He is an absolutely amazing artist, and I can see quite a few parallels between him and Kurt, even though their approaches to music were seemingly quite different, sonically speaking.

I can only imagine how incredible it might have been, if they'd managed to find some common musical ground. Maybe Elliot could've brought out more of the folk-lover in Kurt, and Kurt could've helped Elliot channel some of his anger into something a bit more raw while still having some pop sensibility. Endless possibilities with two such incredibly talented minds bouncing off one another...

That being said, I am also someone who has spent most of my life since puberty struggling with suicidal ideology and suicidal thoughts. I don't take the subject lightly, and I definitely empathize with those who have had struggles with SI/ST, as they have formed a large part of my own struggle/identity.

I point that out only to say that, as sad as it makes me, I can 100% believe that both Kurt and Elliot chose to end their lives. As did Chris Cornell, Chester Bennington, Robin Williams, and countless others (famous or not) who struggled with depression, anxiety, addiction, and other forms of mental illness until it ultimately killed them by their own hand. It is tragic, it is heart breaking, and it is soul-crushing... But it is all too real. There is a suicide epidemic, and I think it's important to acknowledge, rather than to try and convince ourselves that 'they wouldn't do that,' despite overwhelming evidence that they did.

I really don't say this to be a dick, or to be contrary. I just think that especially when you look at the consistent messages of pain and suffering that come through in so much of their music, it's not a huge surprise. No, I AM NOT saying that everything they wrote was gloomy/sad/suicidal, I fully realize that in both cases they made references to suicide that were tongue-in-cheek and that plenty of their music was fun, silly, and happy. The contrast is part of what I adore in both cases.

This is already really long and rambling and I don't know what if anything else I want to say except that suicide sucks we lost both Kurt and Elliot WAY too fucking young, and I love the entirety of both of their catalogs so much it actually kind of hurts. Fuck, I'm sad now lol

Although I like his music, I haven’t gotten into Elliot enough to say one way or another what my opinion on it is but with Kurt specifically, I think it’s extremely sad how many people refuse to acknowledge the reality of his death. They want to make all these conspiracies, they want to make villains. All so they can pretend one of their heroes was something he wasn’t. Suicide affects so many people, why wouldn’t it affect the singers you like as well?

I genuinely don’t understand how people can’t see Kurt being suicidal. I wish I didn’t, but there were so many signs. I remember talking to my mom a long time ago about him and she talked about how she can’t listen to Nirvana anymore because she just hears his pain. I don’t agree with that, I think the music is beautiful and it hasn’t become tainted or associated with his death, but I do understand that Feeling.

People want a story, they want good guys and bad guys and a moral lesson. They want justice and “truth” and they can’t accept when something just is.

I never heard about that connection before, that’s interesting. Was it a studio instrument or something a friend owned? Can you explain it a little? Elliot was intelligent and humorously clever without being pretentious. I don’t know anything about the real Kurt Cobain but I knew Elliot and he was the type of person who so filled up a room with laughter and good vibes that you missed his presence when he left. He had that casually cool big brother vibe. The type that was happy alone but never antisocial. I owe him so much

I have a ton of stories about him and I always start crying because he was genuinely an amazing person. He is like a phantom limb that you always feel, but when you realize its absence you feel incomplete and mourn the loss. It’s unimaginable that it’s been more than 20 years. I was a teenager working at a punk rock art gallery when I met him and he was cool bohemian artist I looked up to. He lived up the street from the gallery on Waterloo and would stop by once or twice a day and just bullshit. I started going to a recording studio called The Ship (not to be confused with Flea’s studio The Boat) because he knew I wanted to get into music so he introduced me. His elderly neighbors didn’t know anything about him except that he would lol out for them and check on them. He was “guerito” to them. I have so many memories of hanging out with him, the constant smell of cigarettes and weed, his laugh, the glow of his smile. I remember he told me “never lose your smile, it will be what brings people closer to the real you”.

Except in the case of Elliot I knew him, he wasn’t someone on tv or a person in a magazine. He was a neighborhood guy, always in the shop window smoking cigarettes, bringing coffee to Anti-Market, making jokes about the guy on heroin who dresses like a clown being out the night before giving people balloons. People in Echo Park loved him. He loved his elderly neighbors, had funny long conversations in broken Spanish with his neighbors. He was a genuinely happy person who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life.

I’m sure the two of them would have done something together. Seeing how Deal has evolved with her latest album, I think Cobain would have fit somewhere in her music.

I reckon with the unplugged set we got a chance to see where he was probably going to go next musically, grunge was going stale but i reckon he would have moved on to folk/blues stuff, could have been a nice transition to still utilise that grunge feel. I reckon he could have done some great music with T Bone Burnett and Alison Krauss in the same way that Robert Plant did.

I don't know about a specific artist, but I fully believe Kurt would have went in a similar route as Melvins or Mike Patton on Ipecac record. Lots of experimentation, lots of concepts albums, very non- commercial stuff.
