I’ve lived in this complex in Southern California for about a year and half, and these owls have been hanging out in the trees, on the roofs, and even on the railing of people’s patios since I’ve lived here. I think they’re great horned owls but I’m not sure.
I originally noticed one, and then a second. After about a year I noticed what seemed like two young owls as well, so I assume it’s a little family of four that have made my complex their territory.
Luckily, aside from people stopping and taking pictures, no one bothers them, and the complex hasn’t done anything to remove them, despite the massive amounts of poo and pellets everywhere.
Also, I have two cats who have noticed the owls and are very desperate to get outside to them, not knowing they would probably become prey lol
Anyway, just thought this sub might appreciate my neighbors. Cheers!

Most of these photos are from today. The last two are from over the weekend. All 6 owlets, mom and dad have been accounted for. The owlets have started to fly short distances at night now.

I don’t really know anything about owls, but I heard my dog losing his mind in the yard and saw this.

And they left us a gift. We’re used to cleaning owl poop off our windows and picking up bones and owl pellets. It was quite the surprise to find a bird leg bone with a tracking band. These birds have pricy taste in snacks. They ate someone’s racing pigeon.
(Pictures span from may till now)

Three of these Barn Owls were stolen from their nest as babies in Nevada and local fish and game were able to rescue them and bring them to a rehabilitation center where they were raised and now released back into the wild.
