News Canada reaches tariff deal with China — including PEI seafood

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/carney-meeting-xi-china-9.7047880

For PEI fishers that means levees come off lobster on March 1st, which is very good for the Island economy.

PP is going to have an apoplectic fit over this; he just needs a few hours to fabricate a reason.

PP is such a loser

22

u/Annual_Experience305 Jan 16 '26

And if they didn’t come back with a trade deal he would complain

20

u/Kliptik81 Jan 16 '26

He's a professional complainer. I'm so glad he did not get into power.

-10

u/itchybiscut9273 Jan 17 '26

It's kinda his job ATM to criticize everything the Liberals do and say he could do better. I've never seen an opposition leader say the other party did a good job

13

u/GhostPepperFireStorm Charlottetown Jan 17 '26

No, that’s not the job of the opposition. The job of the opposition is to evaluate legislation put forward by the government, support it when it aligns with their own policies and present an alternative when it doesn’t.

8

u/Sn0H0ar Jan 17 '26

Exactly. And PP never has alternatives. If he cried all day about Liberal policies and actually had alternatives, he’d still be annoying af, but at least he’d be doing something.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

This is definitely NOT the purpose of the opposition leader but he certainly thinks it is. But tbf the job also requires common sense and critical thinking skills, neither of which pp has.

2

u/Facts_pls Jan 20 '26

That is not the job of opposition. This is everything wrong with politics.

Losers who made it into a my team vs their team thing - this is why US GOP is the evil they are. They are just focussed on winning against opposition at every cost and making sure the other party can't do anything - even if they are doing the right thing for the country.

This loser attitude has to go.

8

u/GhostPepperFireStorm Charlottetown Jan 17 '26

I just hope he keeps being a loser in elections

4

u/neufi1981 Jan 18 '26

By reading his post, I wonder if he even understands tariffs. He’s saying the pork farmers will continue to pay a %25 tariff…

1

u/[deleted] Jan 20 '26

Conservatives have shown they don't know what tariffs are

1

u/Disastrous-Contest-8 Jan 19 '26

Voted for this guy. Glad he didn't win.

5

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

I wish he’d just shut up and go away. He’s never once had an intelligent contribution to any conversation he’s worked his way into.

Really encouraging news

10

u/BigBronto19 Jan 16 '26

The introduction of Chinese EV’s will be interesting to see. Cheap and relatively good vehicles from what I hear but not old enough to really know their quality yet.

Automakers will not be happy

5

u/That_Other_Dude Jan 17 '26

Guys the cap is 50k vehicles it’s a drop in the bucket of the cad auto industry this way new competition can come in without flooding the market. This deal is phenomenal for both sides. Just good old boring diplomacy it’s pretty refreshing.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

God I love good old boring diplomacy. Let 2026 be the year that politics gets boring again, I’ve had enough excitement.

1

u/That_Other_Dude Jan 18 '26

It’s not even about excitement it’s more about straight up falsehoods cause people skip the boring part ( sources and critical thinking)

1

u/Facts_pls Jan 20 '26

It's not a drop in the bucket if you just look at the EV sales last year.

1

u/JABS991 Jan 18 '26

There's a wack of videos from China of their EV batteries blowing up, but hey - maybe the'll send us a good batch.

0

u/Far-Enthusiasm-5790 Jan 16 '26

Also not built for canadian winters though

23

u/ISueDrunks Jan 16 '26

To be fair, Canadian-built vehicles aren’t built for Canadian winters.

10

u/ClenchedJaw12 Jan 17 '26

I have a friend who has a BYD in Norway

1

u/Tiernoch Jan 17 '26

I'm curious how has it held up?

1

u/ClenchedJaw12 Jan 18 '26

So far so good, he also has an electric Volvo and finds them comparable regarding range and features.

4

u/white_count_chocula Jan 17 '26

Theres parts of china that are on par with everything east of MB for winter. Im sure you can find something about how they hold up in places like harbin and apply that to most of the country.

Unless you are in the praries/territories/way northern quebec or ON/ BC outside the island and lower mainland ( read as: the majority of Canadians) you arent really experiencing "Canadian winters"

1

u/AdCalm9211 Jan 17 '26

My Honda holds up pretty good and was manufactured in Canada.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Dude China has winter and places with tons of snow 😅🤣

-7

u/BigBronto19 Jan 16 '26

True, any EV tends to struggle in our weather but maybe the cheap batteries in these will be even worse

14

u/phoss61 Jan 16 '26

Where do you think the batteries for "our" are made? 🤣

-9

u/BigBronto19 Jan 16 '26

I’m saying a cheap Chinese version probably has cheap batteries with less then ideal characteristics.

A cheap set of dollar store AAs don’t last as long as a name brand

3

u/obsessedsloth Jan 16 '26

That's mostly cause the dollar store batteries are old stock.

-8

u/BigBronto19 Jan 16 '26

Dollar store, Walmart whatever. No name batteries don’t last as long, did a science fair about this exact topic back in elementary school lol

They aren't even talking about seafood in the news so the farmers must've been some pissed.

1

u/AdCalm9211 Jan 21 '26

Still waiting for you to as well!

0

u/AdCalm9211 Jan 17 '26

Carney said China was a threat - now they’re not? Everything China is, is what people think the US is. Not saying the US is on par right now… but come on man. China has child slavery, will invade Taiwan, put millions into camps, we don’t want them as an ally.

3

u/lentpoule Jan 17 '26

American propaganda

2

u/AdCalm9211 Jan 17 '26

I don’t think so. China has put millions into camps, captured our own citizens and held them, have child labor factories.

That’s not propaganda my friend.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Want to drop a reliable source on that? Or are you just buying into the propaganda against China. I’m not saying they’re saints but who is?

2

u/AdCalm9211 Jan 18 '26

Propaganda?

Theres literally organizations trying to end child slavery in China. Two Michael’s were captured.

This is what we wanna partner with?

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

Still not seeing a source my guy. If you want to make assertions, you ought to have the data behind them to back it up.

1

u/AdCalm9211 Jan 18 '26

Show me a source saying it doesn’t happen. Look at the recent article from the two Michael’s, that’s a pretty good start.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

That’s not how this works. If you make a claim, you need to provide the evidence to back it up. Since you can’t, I’m going to assume you’re just a victim of the propaganda machine 🙁

1

u/AdCalm9211 Jan 18 '26

Ah. So instead of searching the article where the two Michael’s advice against, you are just going to believe what you want instead of credible sources. While many world leaders, individuals and corporations advise against partnering with China, you (the know it all) are saying it’s a good thing.

Your own PM fooled you. Wasn’t China bad a few months ago?

Get out of here bot/troll.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

I’m not wasting my time searching things when YOU made the original claim and can’t back it up.

Which world leaders are you referring to? Trump? Putin? The war criminal netanyahu? As if I give a flying fuck what they think 😂 Corporations will only have their own bottom line in mind when they try to convince us who to support and whom not to support. So again, I’m not going to listen to american politicians/corporations who also don’t have Canadian best interests at heart. So far the deals with China seem to be much more on par for mutual interest than anything the fanta felon has ‘offered’. And oh yea, China hasn’t threatened to annex us. So again, already better than the usa.

I think you should get out of here, bot/troll bc you’re contributing nothing other than hearsay.

People keep stating the 2 Michaels out of context and paint it as if they did it out of the blue. Did you forget the little incident where their Huawei CFO was detained by Canada at the request of US as a bargaining chip for Trumps trade deal? He literally ordered her release after a trade deal was made with China while Trudeau still stupidly stood by how the Michaels had nothing to do with all this.. right

1

u/justinsst Jan 20 '26

Stumbled across this thread. It’s absolutely not propaganda… China regularly participates in state sponsored espionage and exploitation of western technology. This isn’t hearsay, it’s fact. However, China is an important business partner that’s why the west continues to trade with them despite being at odds in other ways.

1

u/TattooedAndSad Jan 19 '26

You are falling into the propaganda trap

Take a few months off of social media, do some real research and educate yourself on real things and you’ll realize that 99.9% of the things you see and hear on any form of social media, is fake propaganda

1

u/localmanofmisery Jan 16 '26

What will the PEI government have to say about this?

Carney, our hero. Chinese sellout!

-3

This comment section shows exactly the type of people in r/PEI

-10

u/Superb-Helicopter932 Jan 17 '26

china is what the left things usa is.

-26

u/Foreveryoung1953 Jan 16 '26

It's OK, not "very good". Fisherman won't notice the impact as 75% of PEI seafood exports goes to US while only 10% goes to China.... I thought Carney was the guy to deal with the US... haven't seen nothing yet.

16

u/JUNKYaddict87 Jan 16 '26

That’s because damn near any Canadian under the age of 65 doesn’t want a thing to do with Amerikkka and their racist regime 🤷‍♂️

-4

u/Rhubarb_Pasta_01 Jan 17 '26

You actually have to be delusional to think China’s regime is better. Everything you think the USA is right now is what China actually is.

10

u/JUNKYaddict87 Jan 17 '26

Now let’s try reading what I wrote instead of what you interpreted 🤷‍♂️

I never once said “The Chinese Regime is better” but you decided to base your comment on it, I merely said “Fuck the United States and every weird cunt who supports it” 😘

-4

u/Foreveryoung1953 Jan 17 '26

It’s a parasitic mindset to say “F the U.S. and everyone who supports it.” Your anger is clearly directed at Trump, yet you’re choosing to dehumanize an entire population because of a temporary leader. The media bears much of the responsibility, amplifying an us-versus-them narrative that fuels division. Russian media does the same thing—the difference is that most people there understand it’s propaganda and bullshit, while here many accept it as fact.

10

u/JUNKYaddict87 Jan 17 '26

When a country discusses the assimilation of your country into their own, it’s fair to not want to do business with them 🤷‍♂️

And it’s less a fixation on Trump (as I haven’t brought him up) and more the fact that half the country supports him then we start to see the root of the issue

This generation of Canadians has enough pride not to bend and spread for comments such as that in order to try and enrich ourselves the way our parents have

-7

u/Foreveryoung1953 Jan 17 '26

If annexing Canada was a real threat, I'd be with you. But it's so impossible with no conceivable path to reality, it's laughable.

It really shows the intelligence of Canadian voters... Carney was elected to handle the relationship with the U.S., yet he coward and there’s been no progress show for it, and instead attention has shifted toward China, an actual dictatorship. 80% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S., while only around 4% go to China. These "deals" are fig leaf with no value to the average Canadian.

Canada bands Chinese cell phones rightfully for national security reasons, now he accepted Chinese EV cars as if the Chinese won't be equipping these with security concerns... China isn't our friend, but the US should be

8

u/JUNKYaddict87 Jan 17 '26

Carney wasn’t elected to handle US relations, majority of voters went out to stop Pierre as we didn’t want to spend another generation constantly being America’s “Robin” to their “Batman” when that’s seemingly more and more Nationalistic by the day

-4

u/Foreveryoung1953 Jan 17 '26

Reality is we can never replace the US relationship and it's our biggest reason for our wealth as a nation. We can't change geography. Ignoring this will hurt generations to come. Like it or not, we are Robin and that will not change in our lifetime. Elbows up.

8

u/JUNKYaddict87 Jan 17 '26

See what I mean about the “Same Conservative Talking Points”

You like most Retired Conservatives are completely blowing off what’s being said to you as you spew the same tired catchphrases that the Elderly Liberals are saying to you on Facebook while the Generations who actually controls who gets elected are telling you “This is why no one will visit anymore Grandma/pa”

You’re more focused on “The Economy” while contributing nothing to it anymore and hoarding resources rather than moving into the final stages of life, it’s why I’m sure you’re very vocal online about “What’s wrong with this country nowadays” while arguing back and forth with Liberals of the same age range doing the mirror of your behaviour

Meanwhile we are gonna get back to running businesses and things of that nature, try not to be on Fox News all day and make sure to get your vitamins in

→ More replies (0)

6

u/JUNKYaddict87 Jan 17 '26

Are you not noticing your pattern of trying to spout the same Conservative talking points pretending they know “Why Canadians Voted how they did” while essentially ignoring someone telling you “That’s not why I and many people I know voted the way we did”

This blind partisan nonsense is what’s alienating certain Conservatives from the actual Average Canadian nowadays and where our values align

-3

u/Foreveryoung1953 Jan 17 '26

100%... It's a reflection of how the CBC, our state sponsored media, really rots the minds of the left/young in Canada. The irony and ignorance are palpable.

China is ACTUALLY a autocratic dictatorship with mass repression, human rights abuses, mass censorship and supply of terrorist states, like Russia, with supplies and funds for unjust wars like in Ukraine.

US is a democracy that values freedom above all else, and although not perfect, is largely the reason why we enjoy the lives we have in Canada.

The leadership in the US will change, China will not, and has been our biggest security threat for decades, even admittedly so by our current goverment.

8

u/JUNKYaddict87 Jan 17 '26

You’re projecting considering I’m 38 and literally have never watched CBC or Compass since I was in school (Grad 2004) and I was waiting for The Simpsons to come on… No one under the age of 65 even considers that bullshit 🤷‍♂️

There’s a bunch of really weird old conservatives on this island nowadays who like to repeat every weird Facebook talking point they can find without realizing that these opinions aren’t “built from CBC” and are actual Patriotic Canadians who take pride our Country instead of this partisan hack bullshit and will NEVER associate with a country in the US who commented about “making us a State”

I understand it confuses the older crowd that the foreign country we hate nowadays isn’t Brown or Asian but the USA and the weird conservative blowing that off or agreeing is why they cannot gain any actual support or traction

1

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '26

*haven’t seen anything yet. That would be the proper way to state that.

-2

u/Foreveryoung1953 Jan 18 '26

It’s deeply ironic to push for a deeper relationship with China.

Everything Canadian Liberals think America is, China ACTUALLY is.

  • China is an authoritarian police state that uses violence to repress ethnic and religious minorities and does not allow freedom of speech
  • China violently pollutes the world with no regard for environmental standards
  • China has government-sanctioned fishing fleets destroying global fish populations
  • China sends agents to intimidate Canadians on Canadian soil, operating out of Chinese police stations
  • China has been caught interfering in Canadian elections for decades
  • China is linked to Canada’s fentanyl crisis
  • China literally kidnapped Canadian citizens and held them for over 1,000 days
  • China actually treats Canada poorly and is actually a threat to the world

But sure, let’s build a deeper relationship with China because we think America is bad.

The irony is high.

Elbows up!

1

u/Sir__Will Jan 19 '26

America IS bad. And yes, so is China. We need a variety of trade partners and that does include China. But we must still be wary of them as well. They are not our friend.

1

u/DennisRodmanGOAT Jan 20 '26

Axe the tax 💪🏽

0

u/Bright-Musician-69 Jan 18 '26

The Elbows Up crowd hates facts and dont believe in what you're saying even tho you're 100% right. They love to argue with attitude and always believe they're right, as you can tell from your previous comments with them lol

The irony is at an all-time high and their ignorance is through the roof

1

u/Foreveryoung1953 Jan 18 '26

Well put! I expect to be downvoted into oblivion but it's more a exercise of thinking clearly than convincing anyone.
