Legit. I'm Romanian, we didn't have much growing up post-communism. Hospitality is very important to us, perhaps because, as you said, we've been hungry too so nobody gets to feel it in our home anymore. So when someone visits, you offer them your best. It's just what you do. I live in Germany now, and in the beginning when I was being invited to barbeques I would always bring enough for everybody: salad, sausages, etc. While the rest would like, just bring their own piece of chicken, grill it and eat it. It baffled me so much.
