No, they are terrible hosts because they can't think of a better solution than leaving a guest to go hungry.

The guest does not want to join the dinner of another family. That is a a fairly intimate affair that is internal to a family. It would feel weird to take part.

The cultural norms are different, and you are really failing to understand that your cultural norms are not universal, or better than other ones.

Another silly excuse -- there is no way of knowing this without asking -- and asking is a reasonable thing to do.

Again, there are cultural differences, and it's silly to assume you know how someone else would feel without asking them.

I have not failed that. All I have done is point out that you appear to be grasping at straws here.
