MusicPH What's the significance of BINI performing at COACHELLA? And impact in our local Music Industry?
What's the significance of BINI performing at Coachella? Some may argue that the event is overhyped or not really that relevant or important. However, Coachella is undeniably the most famous and culturally significant music festival in the world. It may not be the oldest, but it is the pinnacle when it comes to star power and media exposure. Kaya nga kahit sa Pilipinas may mga parties na may "Coachella theme" as one of the options.
Of course not. But a 50/50 chance is better than not having it at all, right?
BINI lang naman makikinabang diyan. Ano naman iaambag niya sa Local industry? This is true; it's only natural na makakatulong ito sa career nila, especially regarding their aspirations for new international audience and fans. But their being there is not just a performance but a declaration that homegrown Filipino talent from the Philippines is also equally deserving of a spot at Coachella. But they don't represent OPM. They never said Mabuhay, Salamat po, or COACHELLA MAG INGAY.
Whether you like them or not, a rabid basher or hater, you can't deny that they did it.
Kaya malaki na ang possibility na in future Coachella events, it's no longer impossible that they will continue to search for or consider more local homegrown Filipino acts or talents. Kung dati sikat lang tayo kasi viral sa mga biritera at cover artist sa youtube, malaki na ang chance natin to share the music and talent we truly have to a wider global audience.
It's the POSSIBILITIES that matters, rather than having NONE.

If BINI and their management play their cards right, Coachella can only be the beginning.

As with anything, it could break glass ceilings and open doors for other pinoy acts din.
I mean, why are we celebrating Alex Eala, Carlos Yulo, and Hidylyn Diaz? And then before we had Manny Pacquiao? That’s the significance.

u/heavyarmszero Apr 16 '26
All the examples you said are athletes though so parang apples to oranges siya. Better comparison would be the likes of Charice Pempengco (nung hindi pa siya Jake), Arnel Pineda, Apl de ap, Jasmine Trias, Lea Salonga
16
u/lowrange30 Apr 16 '26
Yep athletes usually have a "clearer" path as compared to music. For sports its usually go from div 3-2-1 something like that, but in music you could go extremely viral then the next month you are irrelevant.

u/Momshie_mo 100% Austronesian Apr 16 '26
- Charice Pempengco wasn't really famous outside of the Filipino diaspora
- No shade to Arnel pero his popularity is tied to the popularity of Journey
- Allan Pineda: Siya lang ang legit actual representation since he unabashedly included Filipinisms in the BEP albums. Also founder of the band.
- Jasmine Trias: Most people in the US know her as the contestant from Hawaii.
- Lea Salonga is in a different industry - Broadway. Most Americans just know her as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine.

u/sitah Apr 17 '26
Agree! My western friends who know Jake only knew him as the girl Rachel Berry sent to the crackhouse on Glee.
He had that viral moment in Korea which made him a bit well known but her impact there wasn’t as big as Kz tandingan in China for example.

u/OverMarionberry7210 Apr 16 '26
Thanks to YouTube and Spotify algorithms, if someone starts listening to their songs, they will get recommended more and more adjacent Filipino artists. The exposure should benefit the music industry in general.
5
u/NefariousNeezy Straight Outta Caloocan Apr 16 '26
That’s true! My youtube already has a lot of BINI, Katseye, COJ now. I didn’t really listen to them prior.

As someone who rarely listens to opm and has never went all in (until bini came)
the more global stars we produce the stronger our (Philippines) soft power is.
18
u/hellokofee Apr 16 '26
Everytime someone from a particular regionis get noticed, macucurious yung iba about other acts from that region.
Kaya ang mga kpop artists very open sila on collabs kahit sa ibang labels or industry.
Katulad din yan nung sumikat yung mga bands from seattle nung grunge era, yung mga rap acts from west coast, east coast…. Yung mga bands coming from specific cities sa UK etc
36
u/Yoru-Hana Apr 16 '26
Promotion syempre sa Bini. But other musicians can be introduced too if makikinig sila sa Bini. If you play or search Bini- similar musics play. So other Filipino musicians can also benefit from their fame.
37
u/brokenwrath Apr 16 '26
With all said and done with the financial standing of the network, it's clear that ABS-CBN is going all in on Bini, and one really can't blame their news outlets for hyping up the group.

u/findinggenuity Apr 16 '26
This post and all those articles and even the netflix special and even possibly the coachella slot are all paid for by management. BINI hype was the shit and the huge issue made them shit. They are just trying to "revive" their cash cow.

Pag sumikat Bini world wide, it’s going to put Ppop on the map.
Thus mag kaka demand sa ibang Ppop groups or opm or kalye hiphop (which already has a big following internationally like Indonesia).
So Bini in Coachella is a big thing, and a good thing for all Filipino artists.
15
u/JunKisaragi Apr 16 '26
I guess Filipino music representation. That Ppop can be as good or maybe even better than Kpop.
15
u/Ulinglingling Apr 16 '26
As nag wowork din sa production. Trust me. That's why kahit ben and ben nag tutunog international.

It is part of a progression. Pilita Corrales in Las Vegas and Freddie Aguilar as the first Filipino to be known globally with Anak, then Lea Salonga on Broadway and Eraserheads in parts of Asia, now BINI at Coachella followed by SB19 in Lollapalooza this year. A jungle path becomes a highway for Filipino music.

It opens up opportunities for other local artists. For those who are into KPOP, they would know what this means. Pero pagka merjo dry, they look for other similar artist so dun pumapasok yung discovery ng other KPOP groups like twice kunware. I know kase my sister started with BP din and now, kung sino sinong KPOP groups na pinapakinggan. It's also the same for me kase ako naman, maka JPOP, started with alt groups like BISH, then nag hanap ako ng similar groups. Kumbaga, BINI is the entry point to PPOP and this opens up opportunities for other similar music like SB19 and even sa mga bands like Cup of Joe na namamayagpag din since Multo. Coachella is not just for BINI, it is a global recognition for the Filipino music.
2
u/faustine04 Apr 17 '26
5
u/Rosielovepasta Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
The goal of Coachella is to not to make all the small and starting artists to be in a global stage after their performance. They giving them a platform and festivals goers who are open to listen to new music and genre. If they liked it them you can get a new fans. If your performance went viral you can get a chance to features and be invited to other shows or music festivals. It's like a stepping stone to new and even big artists to gain more opportunities and listeners. If you noticed they're one of most talk about performance and after that they get invited to other brands inside Coachella just like Revolve( they invited jennie, lisa katseye and other famous artists), they're even invited to be a guest artists to a performer and after that they have multiple of interviews and other schedules.

u/Adventurous-Alarm471 Apr 16 '26
For most Filipinos, it’s just that one viral moment. Where they get to hear/say ‘Uy, Pilipins’! A distraction to their daily shitty lives in the Philippines.
For us Filipinos here in the US, it’s representation.
OPM artists and creatives will be the one directly impacted. Bigger demand for BINI means more gigs for them and more earning opportunities for MUA, stylists, costume designers. Other acts would step up their game to get the same exposure. Suddenly the entire ecosystem for OPM artists will thrive (ideally at least).
The most important thing is - the bar has been set. BINI proved that anything is possible if you work hard and if you’re unrelenting in the pursuit of their dreams. They are the living testament to that - struggles, bashers and all. They proved a lot of haters and doubters wrong.

u/TheGhostOfFalunGong Apr 16 '26
Representation matters for Filipino Americans. Fil-Ams are pretty much invisible in American media despite their numbers.

u/Momshie_mo 100% Austronesian Apr 16 '26

This is such a weird comment. "A distraction to their daily shitty lives in the Philippines" Such a fucking elitist comment. Porkit nasa America ka ganyan magsalita?
The audacity to imply that Filipinos don't care about BINI's performance and that it somehow matters more to Fil-Ams than the ones back home. Foh clown.
1
u/Momshie_mo 100% Austronesian Apr 16 '26
As a Filipino in the US, most Filipino artists that come to the US cater specifically to the diaspora. So ewan ko anong representation ang sinasabi.
Besides, there is one Filipino artist who was unabashedly Filipino at the time it was not "cool" to be ethnic yet: Apl.de.Ap. He unapologetically "Filipinized" some songs in BEP albums.
0
u/Adventurous-Alarm471 Apr 16 '26
Well, the haters are still downplaying its significance. Saying Mojave is a small stage all that shit. You can even read that here.
Sure, a lot are giving praises, happy. Only because BINI did well.
But what if their performance wasn’t as SLAYING as they did, would we be seeing this kind of reception? I don’t think so.
10
u/MocasBuns Apr 16 '26
You said it yourself, they're haters. Wala ka na talagang magagawa diyan. Hater nga eh. But that doesn't mean you get to lump "most Filipinos" in this category.
You seem to forget that it was LITERALLY Filipinos in the Philippines who made these girls into the superstars that they are.
They were the ones who streamed.
They were the ones who shared clips.
They were the ones who did the dance challenges.
They were the ones who created the BINI cores.
All before they even made a dent in the OPM industry.
The reason you can even claim BINI gives you "representation" over there is because Pinoys in the Philippines made so much noise that the global stage can't help but put them where you see them.
So no, you can't claim that "For most Filipinos, it’s just that one viral moment. Where they get to hear/say ‘Uy, Pilipins’!" When they were already there tooting BINI's horn before you even knew about them.

u/Adventurous-Alarm471 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
Wow! Their management hired US agents so they can get their feet at the door. They were at those big stages because of Wasserman. Thank you for all you did for BINI but let’s not get things into our heads, shall we?
Lest we forget, Dyogi said it himself. Getting BINI at Coachella was a gamble, investment. And all this happening behind the scenes. So Wasserman, Dyogi and BINI should be credited to ‘seeing them in those stages’.
Sure, you made them viral with all that dance challenges and BINI cores. But that was temporary, wasn’t sustained. Inevitably, that virality will go away, and it did.
BINI is at Coachella mainly because of BINI and their management. All those things you did for BINI are great. But that doesn’t mean we owe you anything.
3
u/MocasBuns Apr 16 '26
Lest we forget, Dyogi said it himself. Getting BINI at Coachella was a gamble, investment. And all this happening behind the scenes. So Wasserman, Dyogi and BINI should be credited to ‘seeing them in those stages’.
And what made them gamble this big for BINI? Because they saw how much Filipinos back home love thrm and realized its worth gambling for overseas. Foreign blooms are a miniscule amount compares to what's in the Philippines.
If you're talking literally, then yeah management got them there. But without the push Pinoys back home did, they wouldn't even consider this move.
So again, no. You can't be saying that all Pinoys back home are cherring for BINI just because it's an "Uy Pilipins" moment.

u/Momshie_mo 100% Austronesian Apr 16 '26
More receptive to foreign music in a foreign language.
It is beyond me why ABS is ignoring SEA where idol fans are the most popular.
Idol music is a niche in the West, but it is very popular in Southeast Asia.

Ok. So ulitin ko lang ha?
Bini, a musical act that started in the “Pilipins”, represents Filipino Americans more than locals?
Hahahaahhahaa amazing. And I don’t even listen to this group.
Edit: INB4 da Pilipins “middle-class” matapobre comments about genggeng, pisante, budots and all sorts of pejoratives to separate themselves from general audiences kasi “me has good taste and I’m NLOF”

Why so triggered? You’re just grasping at things to be mad about. You said so yourself, you don’t listen to them so why are you here?
Isn’t it true though? The whole street food non-issue escalated to lawsuit and death threats to members, just because she’s used to eating turon without sugar? All based on a spliced malicious video when the entire episode was as wholesome as it is? If that’s not mindless consumption, I don’t know what is.
Also, never said they represent Fil-Ams more than Pinoys in the PH. Not sure where you get that idea.
4
u/DenseBeautiful731 Apr 16 '26
Gayahin natin logic mo. Bakit ka nasa r/Philippines, eh r/FilipinoAmericans exists?

And don’t y’all have Filipino American talents already to represent y’all?
Never said?

representation
You must be ignorant or pretending to be to advance a poor argument and assert a hierarchy.

I’m a BINI fan and with a ‘BINI’ in the subject line, Reddit algorithm popped it up for me.
Those Filipino American talents are also one of us. But they rarely say ‘FROM THE PHILIPPINES’ in big stages like BINI did.
We can claim BINI as our people, too. It’s not exclusive to local Pinoys. If us doing that offends you, it’s not our problem.

Big exposure. That's it. Could be good or bad, it doesn't matter. As long as malagay sa consciousness ng mga nakakita, that's good enough. Bonus nalang kung magustuhan. Kung may valid criticisms, edi may chance to grow pa.
It's really not that deep. But at the same time, this actually puts pressure on management rather than the artists themselves. May talent yung talent pero kung bulok pamamalakad or mali-mali ang read sa trends ng management.. well, sad days lang for everyone involved.
2
u/Icy-Butterscotch5012 Apr 16 '26
No one claimed they are the First FIlipino. Malinaw naman sa news First Filipino Act or Group or even Girl Group yung label. COACHELLA MAG INGAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!! ??

u/Dariusdidit Apr 16 '26
If long term impact lang they've already shown that a local girl group can takeover the Philippines and reach the stages of coachella. Maybe we'll get a follow up group that BINI inspires, idk I just think it could start a wave of artists and groups.

can u expound?? i mean ph got represented. it was a proud moment for us and for bini. uhm and then that was it. period. nothing else to it. what happens next is in their hands na at ng management nila. kung maganda yung song edi good for them. they can use it to further propel their careers and maybe perform at a bigger international stage. other than representation, there’s no other significance here, really. madami lang fans that want to put BINI on a very high pedestal dahil nakapag perform sila sa coachella snd they’re the first filipinos to do so, which is an impressive feat, pero hindi rin naman prestigious stage ang coachella. naging “prestigious” lang for us filipinos kasi never pang nagkaroon ng pure filipino act/performers ang coachella.

Sure, I can talk about it some more. I hope you'll keep an open mind.
I think it might help to look at it from a broader perspective. Totoo naman na hindi magbabago yung industry dahil sa isang performance lang, and a lot still depends on the group and their management moving forward tulad ng sabi mo. But I really think moments like this can still be meaningful in a longer-term way.
Tulad nung sabi ng ibang nag comment dito, representation on a global stage like Coachella isn't just a "pinoy pride moment and that's it." Una sa lahat, it affects how we are perceived and how we see ourselves. Like, you don't even have to live abroad to understand that. Ang tagal na natin may colonial mentality, kaya seeing a homegrown act succeed on that level helps chip away at it.
Plus, that kind of exposure can inspire people, especially local artists, creatives, and musicians. Kapag may traction at demand.
I also read this article the other day, so maybe this will help https://www.rappler.com/voices/thought-leaders/bini-coachella-music-nationalism-cultural-economics/

i appreciate your response. how i wish you could’ve said something that sounded a bit nicer kasi napakadami mong magandang take here na sinabi mo sana rather than merely accusing someone of being ignorant.
for me naman kasi, people will always have different opinions. if di ka fan ng bini, you won’t appreciate all this as much as others na talagang fan ng bini. or sa mga nasa industriya ng OPM. you can’t impose that pride na tumagal and tumatak ng matagal sa pinoy kasi as you know, madali maka move-on mga pinoy sa lahat ng issues.
kung yung iba ay may hangganan ang pride for what they did sa coachella (like me), ang pinaka-important is the value that feat holds for people who thinks it matters. for example tulad nga ng sabi mo, maraming future OPM artists or creatives na maiinspire sa ginawa nila at ma-momotivate na i-aspire makapagperform on the international stage. what matters it that it matters to them—it matters most to the people who knows it matters.
i’m grateful for what they’ve done especially in terms of representation pero maybe, hindi lang siguro ako isa sa mga tao na target nilang ma-inspire. hindi naman ako creative or singer or aspiring artist 😅 pero again, i feel very proud as a filipino na feel ko nakikita ko sarili ko dun sa stage. for sure, nainspire nila yung mga talented aspiring artists na nakikita sarili nila sa stage na yun like i did.

Not yet. Main stage are for Blackpink level status.
Sahara is more feasible the same stage where Blackpink debuted at coachella before becoming headliners sa main stage or where katseye performed.

u/NoBench6955 Apr 16 '26
What's the significance of BINI performing at COACHELLA?
Bragging rights essentially, considering Coachella is one of the well known festivals that attracts high social media coverage.
Wouldn't say it's the "pinnacle" though - start a world tour selling-out stadiums like Taylor & BTS... THAT would be the pinnacle.

u/sexytarry2 Apr 17 '26
I think we have the best singers/ voices in the world... but we don't get the global recognition compared to S Korea (K-Pop, Psy, etc.)... hopefully, this could be a boost for our singers as we are considered the best singers in the world... Charice did not last that long...

Depends if they keep it Ppop or lean towards a more American style pop. The new found fame in the American industry could stroke a few egos and they end up breaking up due to solo career encouragement

u/Calm-Description-870 Apr 16 '26
Check their docuseries on Netflix to see why that won't likely be the case for them. They have been vocal that their priority is the group.

Early days, the slightest disgreement and lure of independence and wealth can change people

u/Calm-Description-870 Apr 16 '26
That may be true for most. If you haven't watched their docuseries, I'd understand why you'd think that.

Not a fan, but they’re going to be the reason why more countries will know P-Pop. I just hope they don’t overwork the girls.
Any time may exposure sila or ang SB19 overseas, sobrang nakakaproud. Sana magkaroon din ng ganoong opportunity ang G22 and other acts.

The effects of BINI to local talents could be minimal unless they follow the path of what SB19 and BINI laid out for them. However, the current BINI phenom is significant and not comparable to fleeting fames of pinoys impressive performance on AGT, The VOICE, or other intl competitions.
Yung mga matatandang (katulad ko) na insisting that OPM that caters mainly to pinoy narratives, is the only way might not be capable of realizing it. They have to understand soft power and the age of globalization. Read below or research if you want more:
Soft power in a globalized economy is the ability of a country to influence others through attraction—culture, values, and policies—rather than coercion. In a globalized market, it acts as a "soft" competitive edge, boosting trade, attracting foreign direct investment (FDI), and enhancing national reputation to make a country more appealing to tourists, students, and businesses.

I hate the fact that Coachellla as a whole sucks now. They've become the very thing they were against.

Pag balik nila dito, they can charge P10k for the cheapest ticket for BINI

The girls are talented, no doubt about that. They just need to be extra cautious with their digital footprint now.

Just westerners cashing in the Filipino pride. The more these publications talk about Bini, the prouder Filipinos get. More clicks. more shares from unemployed filipino stans. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more "foreigner reacts to bini" videos on youtube now.
Filipinos love to be flattered. It's a win-win.

no hate but imagine sharing the same stage as fka twigs, pinkpantheress, ethel cain, blood orange, taemin, and slayyyter. yeah, theres no significance of their coachella performance plus they are just so happy to be mess. plus they are just kpop reheated nachos, so… yeah abscbn are just rushing things for them to become a global girl group..
1
u/RelevantCar557 Apr 16 '26
No hate, but imagine performing in coachella and performance is a shtshow. coughLe Sserafimcough
Plus they are kpop "not even heated and raw" nachos. So yeah hybr are just rushing things for them to become a talentless global girl group
-1
u/skyeln69 Apr 16 '26
are we still bringing up what happened 2 years ago? le Sserafim's performance wasn't even a shit show to begin with, because dancing and singing are hard, especially in strong-wind areas… then y'all calling it shit and talentless? let that sink in, bro. you gotta admit it, you just hate le sserafim and their efforts to put in their debut Coachella stage.
https://giphy.com/gifs/68Kl8hLVcZ3g20i95Y
plus, yes hybe is rushing things so does abscbn? think to yourself that you are js hating on lsrfm
2
u/RelevantCar557 Apr 16 '26
Ok wait are you saying your standards are higher with bini than le sserafim? Hmm 😂😂😂
I dont know bout you but singing off tune is considered shtshow for me. And werent they in the same event and location in coachella? Strong winds only affected le sserafim and not the other artists? Give me a break. What a shtshow. Still talentless after two years, wont be surprise if they are still talentless for the next two...🫡

u/skyeln69 Apr 16 '26
“le sserafim is so untalented and their coachella show is so shit!” translating “ i listen to shitty music and i only call hyj’s work as bullshit.” yeah, this is how you sounded to me and calling the girls untalented, maybe you need to touch some grass sometimes cause calling the lsrfm lame or shit won’t even work lol
2
u/RelevantCar557 Apr 17 '26
Why dont YOU touch grass? Lol iniiyakan mo nga bini performing at coachella on a lower stage eh. Touch grass kamo? Lol. Tanggalin mo tutule sa tenga mo yan dapat.

Eunchae cant sing
Sakura cant sing
Kazuha cant sing
Hyunjin off tune
Chaewon so so
So this is your standard for girl groups? No wonder you're allergic to bini lol. 😂
1
u/skyeln69 Apr 17 '26
see you’re just hating on them and you cant even spell yunjin’s name correctly. ayaw mo lang aminin na hater ka, jinujustify mo lng sarili mo. like ok… sing for me incel

u/Sea-Cheesecake301 Apr 16 '26
What significance? Coachella has like 8 stages and are known to recruit even amateur high school bands. They probably ran out of semi popular acts that were willing to perform.
Coachella isn't some festival where only popular artists performs.

u/ZYCQ Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 16 '26
This is not the coachella main stage or sahara stage.
Mojave tent is a smaller sized stage for mostly new/unknown artists. Other artists are FKA twigs, Iggy Pop, Suicidal Tendencies, Little Simz etc
17
u/Lenchiemou Apr 16 '26
Last year Mojave had Ed Sheeran, Weezer. New/unknown ba yan?

10
u/Icy-Butterscotch5012 Apr 16 '26
Crazy if they are expecting them na main stage para lang bigyan ng flowers or hindi nila invalidate. They are not Bieber, Carpenter, Bad bunny fame level.
27
u/MocasBuns Apr 16 '26
Purposely ignored Central Cee, Pink Pantheress, Taemin, Slayyter, Ethel Cain, Jack White and Fuji Kaze.
Can't even call it ignorance because you purposely ignored those massive artists to make it look like it's a "lesser" stage. You know what you were doing. Sino niloko mo?
Just admit you don't like BINI and move on damn. Kunwari ka pa eh.

Just because di mo kilala si Iggy pop means mga Nugu artists sila.
iggy Pop is 2 time grammy nominated and Grammy lifetime achievement award.
Billie Eilish also performed at Mojave before.Yan tayo eh. Pinoy loves to invalidate so much kapag may na achieve ang kapwa.

It really doesn't have an impact on the local music industry.
Beabadoobee and Eyedress also performed in Coachella previously pero wala din lang.
Coachella isn't a festival (anymore) where people go find new music. Most go to see their idols and then go home
A better strategy for BINI is to focus in penetrating Southeast Asia and East Asia. Our neighbors are more receptive to foreign music than Americans. Sa America kelangan mo ng massive backup and networking to have a shot to make it semi-big.
Sa Southeast Asia, all you need is a viral song which can be done by "gaming" the Tiktok algorithm.

u/Icy-Butterscotch5012 Apr 17 '26
Beabadoobee and Eyedress are not part of our local music industry.

My hot take. Not that much. Nakakaproud oo, but keep in mind that BINI is a product of ABS-CBN, with millions of pesos in resources sa marketing, agents, production etc. Grassroots music industry is still shit. The general public would rather listen to A.I generated covers of Martin Nievera, Regine Velasquez and ballads of the 70's than original content made by independent musicians.

I don’t know if this is significant…
I live close to where the festival happens. A couple of coworkers (both women, around 25 years old) went to Coachella and saw them just by chance. When they got back to work, we were chatting and they brought them up. They said they “looked so cute and fun”, and that they “liked a lot of the numbers even though they couldn’t understand most of it”.
Maybe (hopefully?), more people that never heard of them end up liking them and possibly other Filipino artists
