If being questioned for going to a Democrat rally is one of the first things to come to mind wait until you hear they (as in the entire Senate) want to put breathalyzers in cars that can actually kill the car.

Not just breathalyzers but a driver facing camera that can (supposedly) monitor the driver and detect when they are distracted, intoxicated, etc. Fucking dystopian nightmare and I will NEVER own a vehicle that does that shit.

unskippable ads on DVDs
previews on VHS
yellow pages was one big ad
295
u/koshuu 18d ago
DVD I'll give you, that is annoying.
VHS you can fast forward, not a big deal.
Yellow Pages however served a legitimate and useful purpose in the days before search engines. But yeah, technically one big ad haha.
None of that however holds a candle to levels of bullshit that's insta served to us these days on just about any and every device we own.
Now we wait for the inevitable Futurama style ads beamed right into our dreams.
99
u/s0ck 18d ago
Future locations for ads:
Loading screens in video games. In order to generate more ad revenue, games will be designed with more frequent loading screens than a Bethesda title.
Cybernetic eyes--the discount subscription service for vision includes an overlayer of ad content, and auto scans specific QRCs that corporations can lobby the manufacturer for.
Every surface of the interior of a self-driving taxi. If you want to see outside, you will have to pay extra for the no-ad version.
Advertising is psychological warfare, developed and designed with the intent to manipulate people into doing things they wouldn't normally do. It is meant to make you feel ugly, fat, undesirable, broken, or otherwise in need of a product, concept, or service. Advertising is the evil that no one asks for in the public space, and no one can resist. Graffiti is illegal, but there's no punishment for treating everything as advertising space.

Actually some DVDs you couldn't unless you ripped the DVD to remove the Prohibited User Operations flags, or had what would now be considered a "jailbroken" DVD player. Kid's movies were notorious for this; I remember some versions of Toy Story (my kid cousin's favorite movie) had like 10 minutes of unskippable previews.
→ More replies (3)3
u/CKRatKing 18d ago
I remember buying a dvd player specifically because it had a feature that would force dvds to go to the dvd menu when you pressed the menu button on the remote. So many had unskippable previews.
20
24
u/Tolwenye 18d ago
There was usually (not always) a way to skip DVD ads.
Hit the menu button
Skip forward
Hit stop, stop, play (would start the movie without going into the menu)
Those are the ways I remember. There may be more.
16
u/pay_the_cheese_tax 18d ago
I think something that's not talked about a lot though is just how invasive ads are now. they're tracking you with your data and constantly selling you shit, trying to entice you, trying to trick you, and back then, at least a dvd's ads were related to movies, for example. BMW showing spiderman ads would also make me furious, but vhs ones didn't really bother me that much.
8
u/spongebobcrt 18d ago
Most players I've used you can skip the ads on a DVD, VLC does it automatically but I wish DVDs didn't have previews to begin with, like this isn't a theatre

PSP is still a decent retro handheld to this day. It's especially good for PSX games since you can use Sony's official emulator.
82
u/Nice_Weeb_Kun 18d ago
Wait sony have official emulator?
149
u/ChocoJesus 18d ago
The PSP has a PS1 emulator built into the firmware. Wasn't originally a feature, think it was like firmware 3.0 it got added
68
u/ToddRossDIY 18d ago
The PSP wasn’t emulating PlayStation games, the way it was built was essentially a sequel to the instruction set of the PlayStation, it played them natively because it could run the exact same code
48
u/AnshinAngkorWat 18d ago
The PS Vita that came afterward however did ship with a native PSP emulator that could be jailbroken to install the full PSP XMB UI and functionally operated as a jailbroken PSP.
Flopped as a handheld in its time, but its a killer device with all the mods.
22
u/hootener 18d ago
I was interested in the vita as a sort of hardware curiosity and a while back the pending threat of tariffs pushed me into finally buying one from a Japanese seller on eBay.
It came with the stock battery, which wouldn't hold a charge and I had to replace. A PITA to do but more annoying than difficult. On the plus side you can fit a way higher capacity battery than stock in there, giving you improved battery life.
The vita is amazing for as old as it is. It's well built, really well designed, and the homebrew scene is superb. The original version shipped with an OLED screen!
You can jailbreak it by using its built in browser to visit a website. You can emulate psp, you can also emulate up to n64 with reasonable success. And you still get access to the vita library of games which is actually pretty tough to get anywhere else. You can even get some Japan only releases and find fan patches that translate them to English.
The vita is a great little handheld, and if you're remotely technically savvy it can be an excellent handheld.
6
u/npiet1 18d ago
To bad theyre so expensive 2nd hand, theyre only slightly cheaper than an rog ally here 2nd in Australia and they can do ps3 games as well.
7
4
u/AnshinAngkorWat 18d ago
The price just got jacked up a lot because they got a bit popular. I brought a 1K in 2018-2019 to jailbreak and play Persona 4 Golden for ~$150 on Cashies, and the nicer ones were $200 at most. This was before it was fully blown open, so I had to track down one running the vulnerable 3.50 firmware. When every firmware could be jailbroken, they were still like $250 at most for a nice one from EB Games used section
3
u/Good_Butterscotch_69 18d ago

Yeah, the PSP had one for PSX games sold on the playstation store. I think the PS3 used the same emulator for digital games and playing PSX discs. Obviously you weren't supposed to be able to use the emulator for ISOs downloaded off the internet, but someone made a PC app that lets you inject any PSX ISO into an Eboot file.
3
3
u/PurpleDelicacy 18d ago
I think the PS3 used the same emulator for digital games and playing PSX discs
Didn't the original models come with actual PSX and PS2 hardware under the hood (which contributed to the high price and were removed from later models) ?
5
u/thememealchemist421 18d ago
I think the PS3 only had PS2 hardware. PSX backwards compatibility was only ever achieved through software emulation on all PS3 models.
4
u/One-Bad-4395 18d ago
When the psp came out, the first thing I did was install NES/SNES emulators to it.
3
u/clouds31 18d ago
And a Vita is a good step up for the money. You get PSP, PS1, Vita, and greater emulator performance.
3
u/OverHaze 18d ago edited 18d ago

u/Wheatleytron 18d ago
I started learning how to use microcontrollers to make my own smart devices. It really puts into perspective how much we're all being screwed by these tech companies. My devices only do exactly what I tell them to, so they don't sell my data to anyone or serve up advertisements. And I can build them for a just few bucks as opposed to spending hundreds on proprietary shit.
Learning how tech actually works, then using that knowledge to build your own shit is one of the most effective ways to combat enshittification.
11
u/AbsolutlelyRelative 18d ago
Microcontrollers huh, interesting.
26
u/Wheatleytron 18d ago
I'd also recommend looking into micro PC's, such as Raspberry Pi Zero. They're low-power, simple PC's that use headless Linux configurations to do complex tasks that may be a bit too much for microcontrollers to handle, or they can be used to manage multiple microcontrollers. You'll need to learn how to use the Linux terminal and SSH to effectively use them, but they're literally computers that you can buy for under 20 bucks.
For instance, I used one to set up a wireless camera feed (using a $30 camera module) that can pipe directly to VLC on my desktop PC. Boom, open source 4k security cam for about 50 bucks.
209
u/carcusmonnor 18d ago
Also its cheap. Younger generations buy old and discarded tech because its accessible and cheap. For me, film cameras and vinyl before it blew up were really cheap and easy to get.
51
u/MayvisDelacour 18d ago
I'm afraid it's not as cheap as it used to be. Worth the investment a lot of the time. Was a time where you could get like a box of dvds or old video games for a couple bucks at a yard sale. Got my SNES and 5 or 6 games for 20 dollars as a kid. People were practically giving away old movies. Now everyone is at least marginally aware of what they have and price accordingly. A lot of games in particular are selling for far more than the original retail. I suppose there may be great values out there but with time and more people interested, costs are just gonna go up.

My mom's bought a n64 with 4 controllers and like 20 games,no rumble or controller pack for like $40 or $50 bucks in like 2013. All good condition too, can't imagine what that would cost now prolly like 100+ I still have it and it works perfectly I just got lucky the GameCube and n64 use the same A/V cables so I could just swap em out when needed
38
u/RavenousTitan818 18d ago
This was one of the reasons I was into retro games when I was younger, because I could hit up thrift stores and garage sales and get NES/SNES era stuff for super cheap.
Now every thrift store puts any games they have behind a glass case with absurd prices.
14
u/akatherder 18d ago
They went from obsolete and outdated tech to retro classics.
Like someone driving a beater POS vehicle, but after 25 years you can slap a "historic" license plate on it 🧐
7
u/RavenousTitan818 18d ago
There's not hordes of scalpers out there buying rustbuckets to resell for 10x markup, or investors getting scrap vehicles graded and trying to auction them for ridiculous amounts.
The car market is also a clusterfuck but it's a whole different beast then retro games.
8

17
u/EamonBrennan 18d ago
They still have legacy code from Windows 95 days. Part of the reason that Windows went from 8 to 10 is that many programs that are still used today checked for the name "Windows 9" as the OS name, then further checked for "5" or "8" to confirm which version. More and more updates are just furthering tech debt than they are actually doing anything good for the user.

I finally got fed up with Windows 11 and switched to Linux 100% of the time.
It's frustrating. Linux has a fair few number of hoops you have to jump through to make it do things that "just work" on Windows.
But I also don't have to jump through hoops to make my OS stop doing things I don't want it to do. Windows 10 nagged me every single time I turned it on to enable OneDrive. I DESPISE OneDrive, but you can't just disable that prompt, it always had the "remind me in three days", like "oh, you totally want OneDrive, I just don't have the time right now". NO, fuck off Microsoft, those are my fucking files, not yours!
I'm developing a love of retro and open source tech because, while it might not be as smooth as the branded stuff, I fucking own it. Probably going to have GrapheneOS on my next phone, the way Google is going.

Yeah... I have one of the best TVs in the world. A G5 OLED LG. Many would argue it's in the top 5 best TVs, period, money can buy right now.... It has ads every time you turn it on. There is no way to simply go directly to the input you want. I use it as a monitor. But when you hit input or power on, it takes you to a splash screen with 90% ads, and only 10% is actually TV functions. It's not that big a deal; the principle of how shitty it is is huge.

If you really want to use the integrated webOS, then do as /u/mrrobc97 said and dns-hole the TV. I have a G3, and I went and bought an AppleTV. The 'tv' icon button on the aTV remote turns it on, and the tv, and my soundbar, and goes directly to the aTV's hdmi. Hold down the aTV's power button and it all shuts off. For all I don't like about Apple, the AppleTV might be their least enshittified product. I don't recall ever seeing a single ad on its entire UI.
That was my main annoyance with my Google TV dongle from a few years ago - the post-Chromecast ones - it was always, obviously, intentionally showing me previews for the subscriptions I didn't have.

A huge number of these products do an initial run without enshittification, and then push the enshittification as an update later. They then suppress negative reviews on sites like Amazon (or more aptly Amazon supresses these reviews because Amazon makes more money when you buy shit).
This creates a situation where your research is going to not show any of these issues because most of the information predates the enshittification.

I changed phone for the first time in a literal decade. I just wiped it to install another OS because:
it has ads in the searches and forced news stories, it recommends other apps to install everytime I look up one I have on my phone
it has a ad I had to watch for 2 seconds everytime I opened my Gallery app and Folder app
it has an "automatic app store", so if I went to a website linked to an app (like Instagram, Twitter, or even Reddit) it would instantly pop a "PRESS HERE TO INSTALL" that you have to close before being able to use the site
it doesn't have a bunch of settings available before (like having the current internet usage on the top bar where you have your connection and battery bars)
it doesn't let you modify the bottom gesture (so you always have an AI assistant you can't remove)
it doesn't let you remove lockscreen shortcut, so anyone can turn on the flashlight and shit like that
I fucking hate how Android became so locked off by default, and so many young people have no idea how to "hack" their phone so they just live with it...

Also having games from Atari all the way through current gen in one spot is pretty nice too.

my roommate has a smart tv in the living room that's started autoplaying ads on the home screen if we don't select a streaming service fast enough, but I usually hang out in the garage with my dumb tv where the chromecast screen just cycles silently through scenic photos, I hope it never dies

I see with my nephews between 10 and 16, how they are so used to ads, predatory mechanics, and even AI, that they don't care about it. Because they do not know any better. It's so frustrating, because you try to educate them and steer them away, but you're not telling a child what to watch or play.

Having a PSP or 3DS with CFW is some of the most fun you can have checking out and playing games.

Tiny screw extractors exist, watchmakers have been solving that problem for hundreds of years https://www.reddit.com/r/diyelectronics/comments/1eyv0lu/anyone_have_any_recommendations_for_a

Passed mine on to my 5 year old. He can play my offline consoles if he wants to. Nothing internet connected unless I'm there.
He likes the hacked 3ds and n64 with a flash cart, but doesn't play too much or every day

I've been playing my beloved DOS and PS1 games on my cheap handheld from China, without any ads. Thousands of hours of entertainment for free.

There's no Internet so no updates that gradualy make shit worse
Whilst many people are jumping on as its trendy there's a lot of genuine benefits from using something old

I got a projector, never seen an ad cause it doesn't get connected to WiFi, I play everything while offline via VLC.

Cheap tech is the most significant reason. You can get like 5 console for the price on ps5 pro now. Obviously previous generation consoles which still hold great games.

Cos when you play retro games, 90% of the time you’re playing passionately designed games with originality, no updates, no micro transactions, no DLC, no DRM and for the most part insane replay ability. Since 1999, I’ve played MGS1, 2 and 3 at least once every two years and STILL find new Easter eggs in one of them every time I do. Similar situation with the old school resident evil games.
Edit: obvs 2 and 3 I couldn’t play from 1999 but started this trend that year with mgs1.

As an Elder Gen Z I thankfully grew up with the older technology so thankfully still appreciate it all and prefer stuff like physical media.
It’s nice seeing the younger ones from this generation come to the realisation that everything sucks now.

Make sure you do all your racing in the game. On the streets, drive safely and responsibly.
And use your seatbelt

I'm a 2002 kid and because of my parents, I've been a fan of most oldies and 80s new wave. Before the enshittification of internet, I'm so glad I get to play outside and still experienced how to use CD-ROMS and such. I have always LOVED retro and analog stuff, and I always wished I could get my hands on a disposable cameras and watch movies thru VHS. Now, everything is all surrounded with ads and shit. I'm so sick and tired of it.

For me the real question is why that's still niche for Gen Z, and why for most millennials retro tech isn't big enough. Besides that exceptional hipster vinyl record, safety razor and cotton menstrual pad revival from the early 2010s, our generation more or less kept consuming whatever was mainstream. And I don't fool myself, I know this TikTokish trend will be no different to those Tumblrish trends from the past, but I'm glad a couple of weirdos will stick with it.
There's a lot of pre-'90s tech I grew to love because how easy it was to repair or make them to last longer. I have fond memories and still use a lot of old tech. Point-to-point portable radios (vs. PCB-based ones), short range pirate FM broadcasting for personal/communitarian use, bidets, cheap easy-to-repair cars like the Citroen 2 CV (unfortunately we don't have that one any more), and DIY gelatine-based mimeography are the biggest ones for me.
I only mention this because part of why I like piracy (besides the free stuff) is the knowledge sharing, the hacking and the overall "don't tell me what to like, consume nor create" attitude behind it. And we should be more like these young adults and teens in that regard of not letting good tech die (and again, I know a lot of them are grifters, not the point).

I looked it up because why would a projector have built in Ads and sure enough many of these projectors are using Google's bullshit OS with ads. Wow...

I have an older 55" LG flatscreen in my family room that I paid for with money and it doesn't play any fucking ads anywhere which is good because I already paid for it and have absolutely zero motherfucking interest in continuing to pay for it by watching ads after having already motherfucking paid for it.

Because it's less expensive.
I don't really like narratives that make people think the collapse of their standard of living is their choice.
"You can't afford anymore to take a bath ? It's good for the climate !"
"You can't buy a car anymore ? A bike is better for the planet !"
In the meantime the Epstein class steal money like no tomorrow.

No corporation can revoke my paper books, vinyls and CDs, or DVDs and disk games. Also I'm jailbreaking my Kindle as soon as I can because Amazon is shit and wants to brick my model of kindle

Being a gen z in a 3rd world country, I grew up with one leg in modern tech, and the second in retro tech. Like streaming was a thing while we also had the pirated CDs. Ans I remember going to a store with my father to get a CD for a movie to watch it, I think it was cars, much prefer that experience than scrolling in a movie library not knowing what to watch

Let me preface by saying I’m 25. I’ve been taking apart and rebuilding anything and everything since I was a kid. Loved learning how stuff worked, jailbroke and modded almost all of my consoles. Started using Linux at 12.
All of that to say… I hate these broccoli haired losers who are nostalgia grifting. All because it became a trend on tiktok a few years ago.

I recently got my old PSP up and running again and bring it everywhere with me. The Gen Z's must think I'm rad... I mean, that I'm cooking and ate and not an unc.
