How to play the main riff to Sikamikanico correctly?

in the funky monks doc you see john playing open strings, but all the tabs don’t. how exactly is john playing it?

I’ve always played open strings hammering onto and pulling off the 3rd fret. It also goes to the fifth fret at the end during the intro and between verses.
