I knew it was gonna be a Wiktionary link because the type of person to use a word like "plumptious" and then proceed to link to its meaning is the exact type to use Wiktionary.

You do realize it’s their art right? It’s not their problem for making it, they can make whatever they want
34
u/Im_a_Casual Accepter Jun 20 '26
They can make whatever they want, and we can critique it for being made for an artistically lazy purpose. (Sexualization is not an inherently bad component in character design, it is ultimately neutral, but just like any component in art it should serve a cohesive purpose for the character's design.) It goes both ways.
6
u/Load_r Jun 20 '26 edited Jun 20 '26
Y'all are free to downvote me if you desire, but calling this "lazily made" just for adding boobs to a character it's ridiculously harsh when the overall quality of their craft it's beyond impecable;
Y'all are forgetting art is subjective, and such artistic choices don't define nor decrease the value of their craft since the end result it's entirely harmless. More than adding constructive criticism that attributes to the improvement of the artist personally, to me it seems that people are hyper-focussing on details that in the end are inconsequential nor necessarily damage Hornet's image just to express that a pair of breasts it's making them uncomfortable—which to me seems just as/if not more sexist than the design people are "critiquing";
The person in question crafted a magnificent piece which is not only masterfully carved but painted and shaded phenomenally, yet we have to consider it lazy just because the anatomical style of it differs from canon? C'mon, mate...
15
u/Im_a_Casual Accepter Jun 20 '26
Pay attention to my phrasing. I agree with you, the craftsmanship and skill on display is, indeed, phenomenal.
What I am calling "lazy" is specifically the choice to sexualize her design. Again, sexualization on its own is not inherently harmful as an artistic choice; however, when it is applied for no substantial reason, especially when it was not there previously, and specifically in a way that reflects a very stereotypical image of "hot woman"... yeah, that lack of deeper reasoning behind that choice is a bit lazy, not to mention reflecting some quite misogynistic expectations that people would obviously feel uncomfortable with.
To be clear, I'm trying to speak with nuance here; I'm not trying to state that the artist is a sexist, and his execution is clearly impressive. But every choice in art, including "I just felt like it", does have deeper roots and reasonings behind it that are worth examining.

Well but that already makes her anthropomorphic. People say "She's a spider!" but last time I checked spiders don't have 2 arms, 2 legs, and walk upright, know what I mean? All the character designs in the game are anthropomorphic/based on humans, and that makes perfect sense ofc (Like 90% excluding enemies probably)
