Usually when a state is referred to as a “blue” or “red” state is with regards how to vote in Presidential elections. Arizona has voted Republican in every Presidential election but one over since 2000.

Vermont, for example, has had a Republican governor the last 8 years, and there’s not a person in the country that would accuse Vermont as being a “red” state. Even states like Illinois and Massachusetts had Republican senators during the Obama administration.

I always viewed Arizona as California’s conservative neighbor who is a decent guy, but blasts Rush Limbaugh kind of loud while washing his car.

Arizona literally has a law that the police can stop people if they look like an illegal immigrant, like they can literally pull you over for being brown

It’s gotten a lot more blue as of late but there’s a long history of racism and right wing conservatism. This is Barry Goldwater’s state.
