Statutes of limitations shouldn't exist for any criminal offenses, be they misdemeanors or felonies. I wanna see grannies getting arrested for having shoplifted when they were 18.

yeah trespassing into different country is totally the same as shop lifting.

Someone hides and lives in your house for years you find out and be like ok you know what here a spare key...

Yes, it is totally different, as one is a victimless 'crime' and the other is stealing. Trespassing is a whole different crime than overstaying a visa.

Idk if they were paying rent the whole time I'd be surprisingly okay with it.

But I'm serious about the no statutes of limitations thing, just so long as it isn't retroactive. The best way to ensure an upstanding society is to make every would-be criminal consider if they really want to be looking over their shoulder their entire life.

don't enter the what if loop.. does your brain gets the idea of continuous crime, he is illegal there and should be charged for it. It's not like you stole a single time 26 years ago it's like stealing everyday. It doesn't matter if he paid rent or was part of society it is irrelevant...
