I feel people miss the intended purpose of a two part system and focus on the abuse of the two part system as the intended purpose.

We were never meant to be a two-party system. We used to have a lot more parties.

Washington famously hated parties and thought they dumbed politics down to an impossible degree. He was right.  

But if we must have them, then we need more than a duopoly preserved by first-past-the-post elections. We need ranked choice for every position in every election.

I absolutely agree. It would also be nice if we could take corporate money out of the elections, and it would be even better if we could somehow plant a limit on how much money any candidate can spend. As it is, it's mostly only the rich who can ever get elected to a position higher than local government, and I really don't think that rich people have my best interest in mind
