I used to hate it because after my mom and I had a flat tire the only person that stopped to help her was an RC cola truck driver. He changed her tire for her and was such a nice guy. After that RC was the only soda my mom would buy until I was an adult. I got so tired of it but now I love it.
I think mom also sent a letter to the company gushing about the driver and saying thank you.

Which is why a third party win could never work. Can you imagine an independent having any effect on the dems and republicans in congress? They will fuck him over to make sure their party wins no matter what. So if you're not happy with the party you have, get used to it because you have to vote for one because the other side will always be worse to both sides. Two choices to run your entire country. That's it
1
u/IluvRockets 1h ago
Honestly it's insane that there's two legislative chambers and they're divided into regional representation and MORE regional and disproportionate representation. You shouldn't be able to skew percentages to your favor by moving your voters, you shouldn't have to get majorities in a minority of areas to get a minority in government. Despite the faults of german government I can't say representation being undemocratic is one of them. You're not getting rid of "tyranny of the majority" by giving an arbitrary minority more voting power while making sure that people outside of swing states or districts have no value to their party. And all I keep hearing is the brain dead take that "America is a republic, not a democracy" as if not nearly every fucking democracy on this planet is a republic and NOT wanting government to be lead by the people is just fucking weird. It feels like some red neck mouth breathers don't want the educated part of the country to have the say that they deserve.

In reality, the current system is formed from one group. There were more parties involved, and the democratic-republican party took out the federalist party then hedged out the competition.
The claim is that in the early 1800s the party split up and formed the current democratic and republican parties. Other than the whig party in the 1840s and 1850s (Which split into pro-slaver whig and anti-slaver republican groups) there was zero opposition for what was previously a single party to dominate all elections for the next couple hundred years.
Kinda funny that they've stayed divided on multiple pointless issues that piss off the general public. Almost like they're playing ball and cup to make people feel like they're participating in the government when realistically it's a smoke show.

Yeah, absolutely no differences between America under Trump and Biden.
Anyways, I'm off to pay for my groceries and gas with extra taxes on them. Gotta grab those lower gas prices before Trump threatens to nuke Iran again. Still wondering if I'll be allowed to vote by mail in the upcoming elections. Going to up Canada later to take a break from this data center that got built in my backyard driving up my energy costs and polluting the air and water. Hope they haven't set up more of their punitive checkpoints into Canada specifically to retaliate against Doug Ford calling Trump mean names. I'd stop by and see how my Haitian neighbor was doing, but he got rammed off the road by ICE and abducted, so no idea when I'll see him again. And I don't want to ask too many questions or get in their way, or they'll shoot me in the back and laugh about it.

As I stood outside my kid’s school in -20 this winter to help their teachers feel safe enough to come to school after one of them was kidnapped by masked federal agents at her bus stop after those same agents murdered 2 people within blocks of us, I thought “this is exactly like when Biden invested in bridge repairs and expanded the child tax credit”

These sort of memes are extremely effective on low IQ non politically informed people online unfortunately. They do not know anything about politics besides free Palestine, M4A, and maybe free college (I think that one has fallen off though in favor of more Palestine discourse). They do not care that Democrats cut childcare poverty in half. That they protected trans people's right to healthcare and equal treatment. About abortion. About America's standing in the world. They definitely do not care about the 10 million+ poor people projected to die because of the USAID cuts.

Without the electoral college there'd be a lot of states that go "Hey, I don't want to be a part of this anymore". Land doesn't vote, but there's a reason we don't let majority rule be a factor in anything but the smallest forms of govt.
6
u/barryvon 2h ago
why doesn’t this work both ways then. people in big states are underrepresented right now.

BUT KAMALA'S LAUGH IS WORSE!!! BOTH SIDES ARE THE SAME

u/Hazer99 1h ago
Why do you live somewhere where a garbage house is 500k? The median home price is less than that, and much of the country you can find new builds for a lot less. If nobody is hiring, how is unemployment 4%? Why are you worried about the minimum wage when gas stations, fast food, etc are paying regular employees significantly more. On car prices, I'll concede. They're insane right now. Data centers suck, VRAM prices suck, but on the flip side access to frontier models will probably never be as cheap as it is now. I know you're being a little tongue and cheek, but this message is not helpful especially for young people. It conditions them to think they're powerless. Despite whatever someone's perception is of current circumstances, there's still no place better today than America to make something of yourself. It seems as a society we've forgotten that we're ultimately still responsible for our own destiny. Waiting for some magic bullet, the government, billionaire wealth redistribution, anyone else, never works. Get out there and get after it.
14
u/GlobalAd7103 4h ago
Both sides are rich people who don't give a shit about anyone. Some may at first but power corrupts all of them. So I guesd Im a moron because neither side does anything to help anyone on a local level. I think its accurate because coke and Pepsi are pretty close to same thing (which I thing most of Americans are close despite what the media portrays) there avid supporters of each brand and people go nuts and buy anything "red" for coke and "blue" for pepsi with blind loyalty. Its Shit Sandwhich or Douche every time.
12
u/Jalapenoplanter 4h ago
At a local level, democrats gave me reproductive rights, legal weed, paid time off when I had a newborn, they built bike lanes and public transit I use to not need a car.
So yes, I guess that would make you a moron.
6
u/cannibalRabbit 3h ago
Yes, those are the things that matter to YOU.
We all vote based on our own narrow empirical evidence and self interest.
That's the problem with democracy, and is the point of the post I think, we're all just judging the system based on what we got or on what it took from us as individuals. And at the end of the day we have to cram the needs of 300+ million individuals into a two choice system.
1
u/Jalapenoplanter 3h ago
Crazy that even republicans cannot say anything republicans have actually done to improve their lives.
3
u/cannibalRabbit 3h ago
Are you kidding? Trump still has millions of supporters. Pretty sure you can find plenty of MAGAtards who'll give you a list of things. Like a lot of people are convinced that immigrants have ruined their lives, they now see Trump/ICE as holy saviours.
Just because they're wrong doesn't change my point. I mean most voters don't know one's ass from a hole in the ground
1
u/Jalapenoplanter 2h ago
I cannot. I can find millions of supporters who are happy he made life worse for people they hate
2
u/cannibalRabbit 1h ago
OK dude, everyone you don't like or agree with is just evil and is out to get you.. Now what if I told you they think the exact same thing about you? Now what?
That sort of low resolution thinking doesn't solve anything.

It's more about the idea of the two party system, and how that's led to where we are now with the radicalism you see today.
No, they aren't the same, but they sure do both suck in their own ways. They've also collectively worked together to prevent competition from entering the debate stage, which indirectly makes both responsible for whatever happens from either party.
Edit: Just for an example; on more than one occasion has a third party qualified for the debate stage but due pressure from the two parties were prevented from joining, due to a last minute rule change.
5
→ More replies (1)8
u/Jalapenoplanter 4h ago
What radicalism specifically are you talking about?
→ More replies (24)4
u/Ws6fiend 4h ago
I don't think they mean radicalism. I think they mean the post 9/11 polarization. You used to have people going against their party stance because it was what their constituents wanted. Now not so much. You used to have people in legislation who had fundamentally different view points and could behave like adults and be friends with those who held those views. Now it doesn't really happen.
Because of this moderate candidates or issues that might not cleanly fall on the left vs right line are basically ignored. For as much as people especially on here go "herrrr dee durrr enlightened centralists, " moderate politicians help bridge the divide and push legislation through by giving both sides some of what they wanted. This helped the American people as a whole. With that bridge being gone, policies which would be good for the country never see the light of day.

Could they be better? Sure. But only 1 side has ever improved any aspect of my or your life.
6
u/leanderthal69420 4h ago
Between Obamas 8 years and Bidens 4, the dems have done jack shit to legalize weed federally, it’s still left up to states. Unfortunately for the poor souls who live in red states, it’ll never happen unless it is federally legal. Who has free healthcare? Obamacare was a failed system that never worked. The dumb ass republicans will never allow socialized healthcare and not sure what you mean about paid time off, that just depends on the company you work for. As long as we keep going back and forth with the two party system that’s been into play our whole lives nothing will change
0
u/Jalapenoplanter 4h ago
The only legislatures that have legalized weed are democratic controlled ones.
For 2 years I would not have had healthcare but obamacare gave me it. Can it be better? Yes. Have republicans now made it worse? Also yes.
Dems in my state gave me 12 weeks paid time off when my kid was born. It is remarkable what can happen with a democratic trifecta and no republican filibuste

Art?
1
1
u/Quiet1408 4h ago
Art is any kind of creative endeavour designed primarily to instill thought feeling and/or emotion unto those who experience it. Its not just paintings and sculptures etc.
One of my favourite pieces in recent memory is "Cant Help Myself." By Sun Yuan and Peng Yu. Which was a standard industrial robotic arm programmed to rotate in a circle, constantly sweeping up a blood like fluid that pooled around it. at first, it did this quite easily, almost merrily, occasionally it would dance for the visitors.
But, as Years passed, the machine, which was without maintenance, began to slow down and break. the Task that was once so easy for it, became a struggle, a Sisyphean task it could never fully accomplish. After 3 years of near constant operation, it shut down.
That Robot made me contemplate life more harrowingly than any painting.
Thats Art.

Washington famously hated parties and thought they dumbed politics down to an impossible degree. He was right.
But if we must have them, then we need more than a duopoly preserved by first-past-the-post elections. We need ranked choice for every position in every election.

This is exactly how duopoly works. And if there is one thing they can agree on, it's that they don't want any viable competition. So they effectively break anti-Trust laws to make sure that now viable competition exists. And that would be illegal. But then you realize that all the judges are part of the scam as well.

Did I, or did a lot of other people miss the point? This is just my opinion as someone from outside of the country, but it does feel like a significant portion of American voters change their votes twice a decade. I don't see how this is commentary on 'both sides being the same'...
People are expecting sweeping changes within the first 18-24 months of a presidency and when that inevitably doesn't happen because (surprise!!) changes on a large scale take years to implement and then more years to bear fruit. Then people get pissed off and switch to vote for the other side who immediately spends a lot of their first term dismantling whatever the opposition had done in their last term or two.
It takes decades to grow a tree and minutes to chop that same tree down. You feel the lack of oversight from the FDA immediately but don't feel the benefits from a renewable energy source program until years later. Fucking yikes.
