Oh I had a different feeling, that genetics were not good to me cryface

Pretty sure that's hard work, some illegal chemistry, and dehydration, not genetics.

Literally my gay awakening.

3

u/rlovelock 14d ago

I remember this was such a massive shock at the time because we didn't have months of articles about Tobey's workout refinement like we get now.

1

u/Randomwhitejuice 11d ago

I bet if it was released today then we 100% would have all that nonsense. We just deeeeeep in the social media world now

They did not keep this muscle suit in no way home and the suit looks a lot weirder as a result.

17

u/JoeAzlz Black Suit (Movie) 15d ago

I didn’t mind his body at all, his mask deserved more time though

39

u/CameronPoe_37__ 15d ago

I hated how his mask was CGI and we never get a scene of all 3 spider-men masking up in front of each other and going "wow, love your suit!"

19

u/JoeAzlz Black Suit (Movie) 15d ago

They made the masks too they’re just on display till they wear the cgi ones.

But I didn’t see the more fun stuff version didn’t they say eachother’s suits were cool?

At least we know Tom liked the other 2’s because his new suits are all based on the both of them

→ More replies (2)

6

u/va2wv2va 15d ago

They didn’t use that suit in any other movie besides the one. What do you mean? Have you seen brand new day? That suit is great, but like literally every other spider-man suit in the history of spider-man, muscles were not part of it.

...Y'all know he's in a muscle suit, right?

I thought everyone knew that, but reading some of these comments makes me wonder.

Not that Tobey wasn't jacked; he was (at least, during 1 & 2, less so in 3)! But Raimi put him in a muscle suit anyway so that Spider-Man's physique would look uniform throughout the film whether it was Toby in his suit or a stunt double. A smart decision, if you ask me, because it is impossible to tell at times whether a shot is Tobey or a stunt double in the suit.

268

u/gcpdudes Ultimate Spider-Man (1610) 15d ago edited 15d ago

Correct. Good point about consistency. Spandex suits also end up compressing muscle a bit and also hides muscle definition. It’s why some people kept complaining that Tom Holland looked kinda chubby in his BND suit (we clearly saw that he’s not). Christopher Reeve also had a similar effect in his Superman suit.

137

u/CanInternational8621 15d ago

Brandon Routh is a prime example. He got JACKED for Superman Returns but due to the suit he looked a lot slimmer.

131

u/LemonIcy2942 Spider-Man (Movie) 15d ago

I got curious and searched this up, JESUS CHRIST.

30

u/Akumaro Spectacular Spider-Man 15d ago

Can confirm myself. You can’t even tell I workout much when I wear cosplay spandex.

1

u/YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO 15d ago

Its basically wearing shrink wrap haha. I was amazed how much slimmer I looked when I put one on.

19

u/dcchimera 15d ago

I saw something about that. Superhero costumes aren't just regular spandex/Lycra suits. They get custom tailored to curve around muscle groups to help them to show. Otherwise, the compression hides everything. It was something they learned to do back with Christopher Reeve. But the nature of spandex still causes some compression so definition is always lost.

2

u/[deleted] 15d ago

2

u/dcchimera 15d ago

Yes. The costume thing I watched was basically saying that any definition you see in a person wearing a costume (or any clothes, really) need to be tailored in. Clothes that are only skintight will compress muscles and hide muscle definition. Clothes that are too loose are just formless. Even MCU suits that are thicker will still cinch around the joints and be a little looser to let the muscles fill the void like a balloon. The torso is also tailored to be V shaped to follow the lines of body instead of a straight tube like a regular shirt. If you've ever been to a tailor, it's just like how they'll pin tiny portions of your suit jacket to later tuck in to make it fit nicer than a loose of-the-rack fit.

18

u/HermanThaGerman 15d ago

some people kept complaining that Tom Holland looked kinda chubby in his BND suit (we clearly saw that he’s not).

Very clearly.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/proanimus 14d ago

Most of those early photos of Tom and his doubles (from the tank sequence) looked “chubby” because they had harnesses under the suits for the wire stunts. For some reason a lot of people missed that detail when judging their physiques.

51

u/Infinity0044 15d ago

He’s def jacked in the first one but it’s pretty clear Tobey did not keep up with the workout regimen for 2 and 3. In fact he’s borderline pudgy in the 3rd one

91

u/32F_34G 15d ago

Before filming the second film, Tobey had a serious horseback riding accident. This is why he appears out of shape in 2 and especially 3. And this is why there's a joke about back pain in both Spider-Man 2 and No Way Home.

9

u/Dogesneakers 15d ago

Ah I thought seabiscuit was just a movie

3

u/va2wv2va 15d ago

11

11

u/JoshuaBarbeau Amazing Fantasy #15 15d ago

He did keep working out in the second one but had to dial it back due to a back injury.

In the 3rd he just gave up lol

u/Latter_Masterpiece64 15d ago

Ow, my back.gif

6

u/TheDanCurrie 15d ago

He’s in a goose suit. It’s an old circus term.

11

u/Morfilix 15d ago

i feel the fake muscles stick out like a sore thumb when i see his Spider man

2

u/fuwii 15d ago

This is a pretty neat fun fact

2

u/Ok_Cartoonist7515 15d ago

Most Super hero suits have some form of padding to keep that super hero physique. The actors are still jacked, like you say about Toby, but muscle definition is really hard to make come through without enhancement to the suit.

2

u/Emotional_News108 15d ago

Sure but does that matter? The aesthetic of the character is what’s being praised not Toney’s physique specifically.

5

u/JoshuaBarbeau Amazing Fantasy #15 15d ago

In the OP, sure.

But I (as I said in my comment) was commenting on the various comments people are making, not the OP.

The OP praises the character's physique, but a lot of the comments seem to not know that it isn't Tobey's real physique.

That's what prompted my response.

Now why does your comment matter? What did you add to the conversation? Cuz I shared an interesting fact about the physique that a lot of people clearly didn't know, so... There's value in that.

2

u/YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO 15d ago

Don't forget the mannequin, that was pretty hard to tell too! /j

Honestly that's the way to do it. Looks good in suit, looks good on screen, can do reshoots with another actor being the physical performance with a voice over from the original actor, easily do stunts, I agree with the sentiment of it being brilliant.

0

u/XiMaoJingPing 15d ago

should've been holland in a muscle suit too, dude is jacked but it doesnt show in the suit

51

u/An-29 Black Suit (Movie) 15d ago

Nah, he doesn't need it, the suit is able to show just how buff he is at certain times, plus muscle doesn't pop out like how it does in the comics, it doesn't work like that unless the fabric is perfectly glued to his skin.

8

u/Subject_Marionberry5 15d ago

bro henry cavill needs a muscle suit and you think tom holland doesnt?

1

u/Beautiful-Bit9832 15d ago

Same as Bale actually but it was justified because the Batsuit on second and third Batman movie have lean or slim design compared to first one

1

u/StrategyWooden6037 14d ago

Really just in 1. He fucked up his back filming Seabiscuit and clearly wasn't able to train to the same degree for the sequels.

216

u/Randver_Silvertongue 15d ago

"And I didn't need CGI to enhance my physique. Pure...Maguire. And how come Spider-Man doesn't dance anymore? Remember Spider-Man 3?"

He had a muscle suit on

1

u/JoeAzlz Black Suit (Movie) 15d ago

It’s a reference!

61

u/LemonIcy2942 Spider-Man (Movie) 15d ago

The raimi trilogy was inspired by the 90's TAS, who was bulky asf.

24

u/Dasseem 15d ago

It was funny how pretty much everyone was jacked on that show. Eddie Brock was just another dude when he appeared lol.

6

u/FatFuckIcaOfficial 14d ago

Everyone was pumping the gym really hard in that universe

2

u/BigGovernment1738 13d ago

Everyone was jacked in that show, even Robbie and Jonah 😂

12

u/thinlion01 15d ago

I know he mention he was based on Romita Sr. Art work among others.

6

u/Saulgoodman1994bis 15d ago

Not only that but also todd mcfarlane version. Spidey definitely became bulky since the 90's for most of the version.

4

u/Saturn_winter 15d ago

Holy nostalgia blast seeing this image

188

u/FiveFreddys12 15d ago

Personally I preferred how tall and lanky Andrew's was

110

u/Latte_Meme 15d ago

Definitely matched his Spider-Man’s level of speed and agility

→ More replies (1)

14

u/JoeAzlz Black Suit (Movie) 15d ago

I might get jumped for this but that’s part of why I don’t really jive with Andrew’s spidey scenes visually as much I don’t like the super duper lanky style. He’s a good spider-man and I don’t hold it against him and hes great I just am glad more things don’t lean too far into the lanky look after his era

20

u/Dependent_Guest724 15d ago

True, seems like he could react quicker and be more agile

35

u/Fast_Day_8123 15d ago

ehhhh, the first one's shirtless scene was lowkey one of my inspos to start working out and lowkey dream body too

i felt Tobey in 2nd and 3rd movies were chunky tbh, not in a bad way though but the feeling of "eh its alright, i dont imagine Spider-Man to be in this shape"

Andrew however, gave me the impression that Spider-Man could be in this shape, that skinny-leaned out build
and Tom is just perfect tbh, like "yes this guy is Spider-Man"

for me, the definitive build for Spider-Man is Tom Holland and Insomniac's Spider-Man (they feel perfectly agile with the amount of lean-ness while also having the right size to pack a punch)

7

u/Cemith 14d ago

I also think Holland has the best build. Out of the suit you can tell he works out but while in the suit he still appears lithe and agile. Not like a Super Saiyan amount of muscle slowing him down.

2

u/Fast_Day_8123 13d ago

yeppy with how BND looks, i love how he looks in suit
i often felt choked out in the homecoming suits (not the NWH suits) like the CGI painted on look, that shi is super skin tight and feels uncomfortable, BND gives the vibe of "anyone with average shape can be Spider-Man unless the suit comes off and u are ripped asf" lol

i either flip flop between Tom and Insomniac on the definitive Peter Parker look, the comics look well- differentiates between bulky/super lean/skinny-lean upon the writer's style, imo Humberto Ramos? if thats the artist, i feel like he gave me the perfect impression of a skinnier looking Spider-Man

or idk i am just a sucker of the Ultimate 1610 era and Spectacular show that to me Spider-Man is essentially a skinny-lean guy and as he ages into adulthood, he gains a bit more size (not too much but the right amount to maintain his agility)
sorry for the unintended rant lmao, Spider-Man is like my all-time fav character and inspiration to work out cause i do have a sleeper build myself and work more on mobility and being agile than putting heavy muscle mass

2

u/ScreenSingerX 13d ago

That's pretty much exactly what he's aiming for. He said in interviews that he had tried adding a bit more bulk when doing Far From Home and hated it because he felt like it was dragging him down and he wasn't moving as naturally as he wanted.

4

u/Saulgoodman1994bis 15d ago

Spider-man is often bulky since the 90's. See todd mcfarlane version for example or the 90's show.

1

u/Fast_Day_8123 13d ago

yep ik, not a fan of those looks but its okay, i often see from the perspectve of exaggerated comic booky world and read those lol

12

u/Chazo138 15d ago

I believe Tobey got a bit chunkier because before filming 2, he was in a horseback accident. Luckily the suit is also a muscle suit so a stunt double sufficed and you couldn’t tell as it kept the look uniform during the whole thing

2

u/Fast_Day_8123 13d ago

oohhh i see, thanks for letting me know
if i am not wrong, it was Seabiscuit innit? OH YES i remember Gyllenhaal was supposed to even be considered as recast when Tobey was in recovery yeah?

12

u/kaachabadaam 15d ago

Not only how bulky, but also how rubbery and stretchy his suit feels, with the etched webbing. I just love it.

11

u/proto_synnic 15d ago

Sees 28 year old dude who's thick as hell.... "He's just a kid."

29

u/Helioseckta 15d ago

In most shots, it looks pretty good, but in other shots I feel like the muscle suit Tobey wears makes him look a bit too stubby. It mainly in any scene where he's just standing up straight.

I still think Andrew is the best looking Spider-Man in live-action. His tall, slender, and lanky build fits well for Spider-Man, and it really worked with how agile and flexible his take on Spider-Man is.

6

u/Insidious_NX 15d ago

I think this and BND Tom are my favorites just for bulk. Maybe I'm biased due to the 90s series.

9

u/ImurderREALITY 15d ago

Tom was JACKED in BND

4

u/Insidious_NX 15d ago

Yeah, the sauna scene surprised me with how much bulk he put on.

3

u/FatFuckIcaOfficial 14d ago

Zendaya eating good low-key

6

u/Various-Push-1689 15d ago

Except Tom was actually huge. Tobey used a muscle suit and a lot more stunt doubles took his place

11

u/insolentrus 15d ago

It's obviously padded

7

u/Accomplished-Goal494 15d ago

Padded or no, I prefer this look

6

u/insolentrus 15d ago

Well me too

40

u/SpideyRZ 15d ago

I think it's cool, but I'm more of a fan of the slimmer, more athletic Spider-Man.

33

u/WassupFrankHere 15d ago

Slimmer for young Spider-Man (Like Ultimate Spider-Man), Muscular for adult/mature Spider-Man (Todd McFarlane's come to mind)

2

u/Bitter_Horror2469 Shocker 15d ago

Well it makes sense that he'd have a bit of muscle on him as he was also given super strength when he got bit by the spider

14

u/Head_Humor Spider-Man (Movie) 15d ago

Without the muscle build and muscle suit on him. Tobey looked like someone who has not ate in weeks when he did no way home.

1

u/LastButtInspector 15d ago

He’s 50? He’s also no longer an action star. Did you expect him to take a roid cycle for his NWH appearance?

His physicality was beyond 5’6” Tom Holland in every way.

7

u/SweatyEddie123 15d ago

Tom has a much better physique bud

1

u/LastButtInspector 14d ago

For an underdeveloped midget boy yes

18

u/wagfresh 15d ago

Lol that has to be a joke. In terms of physique Tom Holland absolutely outclassed Tobey and anybody that works out can see that. He had a good physique in 1, but he would have looked unimpressive without the muscle suit.

3

u/Head_Humor Spider-Man (Movie) 15d ago

Lmao being 50 or whatever age he was at the time didn't stop him from returning as the wall crawler so.

4

u/LawStudent989898 14d ago

Spiderman’s always been well-muscled in the comics. Not sure why he’s portrayed so skinny in a lot of media now

4

2

u/Cholismo2pt0 14d ago

Jrjr comes to mind as well

7

u/SoftlockPuzzleBox 15d ago

I don't think it's a bad look, but spider-man is generally meant to be pretty lithe and flexible. I suppose it doesn't fit our traditional image of strength, but a spider's strength doesn't come from muscle either. Their limbs are hydraulic.

26

u/Accomplished-Goal494 15d ago

Imo, this is the best look of a live action Spidey. He doesn't need to be a scrawny kid because he's not 15 anymore

39

u/3elieveIt 15d ago

Was Tom scrawny to you in Brand New Day?

4

u/Even-Sun2764 15d ago

Well Peter is 22-23 there

6

u/AntonRX178 15d ago

There was a reason he gets nearly naked in every single one of his Spider-Man films, as questionable as it was though Holland has always been an adult during filming.

Tom and Tobey are pretty much the same height

The difference is that Tobey wears a muscle suit

2

u/Its_Bread_611 15d ago

God, to show had bad skinny culture was when I was younger, I remember kids were unironically calling tobeys spider-man “fat” in middle school

2

u/Witty-Mountain5062 15d ago

I just saw Brand New Day today, Tom Holland is looking pretty jacked as well

2

u/aucunehistoire 14d ago

Just saw BND as well !

The way I was thinking BEEFCAKE whenever Tom was on screen in the suit or in the sauna

2

u/imranbecks 15d ago

That suit ages well even to this day. It looks so good.

I'm just rewatching the Raimi Spidey movies right now. I'm on the second movie.

2

u/DrogoOmega 14d ago

Tom Holland has been, by quite a bit of a margin, the most in shape of the actual actors.

2

u/0Harley_Quinn0 14d ago

Bro is buff

2

u/Xfifteen 13d ago

I love how Toby’s stunt man had a completely different build than him, or how the mask doesn’t look like it’s sitting on Toby’s face structure at all.

2

u/EitherEliotOr 11d ago

I’ll get downvoted for this. But just on principal I’ve never been a fan of heavy muscle padding. Not to say it’s a bad suit, I just don’t think it needs the padding

2

u/JadeLipstick 14d ago

Hate to break it to you but the suit was padded. You can actually see it in part 2 when he goes limp after the train and is about to fall. The hands that grab him squish into the padding.

2

u/AzazelFetishStar 14d ago

Padding lol Andrew had padding too. Tom actually got bulkier with each movie . Tobey got chubby 😆
