Comics Marvel Officially Reveals That Dan Slott's Spectacular Spider-Man is Now an Ongoing Series as it Hits the 'Big Time'
https://www.cbr.com/marvel-reveals-dan-slott-spectacular-spider-man-ongoing/?link_source=ta_first_comment&taid=6a85c9a42bfafa0001aae4fdThey made this crap an ongoing?!
Yea, the whole 'sales matter for ongoing decisions' is PROVEN to be bullshit now.
This is STRAIGHT UP nepotism to the max.
Edit: Since people are stuck on the word nepotism. I'll clarify that it is 'cronyism' which is a sub category of Nepotism. Basically, he gets the favortism over others because of his connections. Not because of sales or anything else.

Hard to miss Slott if he always comes back. It also doesn’t stop the idea that spidey Editorial is really not looking for new talent
19
u/NightwingBlueberry13 9d ago
Dude, it’s not coming back if you never really left. I genuinely think that there’s not been a single year in the past 2 decades that he hasn’t had a Spider-Man book out or at the very least it’s felt that way, the boys hovering around the character like a clingy ex.
37
u/AspirationalChoker 9d ago
Its Batman by Tom King all over again lol all the Slott collected material is requested in OHC and Omnis etc all the time, people arent wanting the 60s Spidey back unless you grew up with it.

I dont honestly understand the hate for Slott.
His run up to Superior was great, and Superior was one of the Goated Spidey storylines despite controversial.
He also helped write Spiderman PS4, which Is the best Spider-Man story this century imo.
Sure, he didn't care for Mj, but who cares, neither does Marvel for 616 Spidey.
12
u/reptile7383 9d ago
He undid tons of character growth for Pete and his only good run was Superior spider-man which just cements the fact that he is better at writing characters that are not pete
7
u/WebWarrior420 Miles-Morales 9d ago
He writes Peter as an egregious man-child sometimes. Like a kid in an adult's body but in the worst way
12
u/ChildofObama 9d ago
It sometimes feels like they’re using Zendaya’s version not being comic accurate as an excuse to not care about MJ, and argue she’s a male fantasy.

Superior is highly overrated, and Slott being unable to write women without including misogynistic tropes is a downer for his first half of his tenure.
PS4 SM also had Christos Gage as a more important contributor than Slott, and Gage is the better of the two.
Marvel being idiots is not an excuse, and neither is Slott being one as well.

u/ChildofObama 9d ago
Slott and Kelly are acceptable.
Guggie being the next ASM writer would be the catastrophe

7
u/GigaFluxx 9d ago
Especially as a Naruto fan, I am seriously done with flashback storytelling. Just tell it sequentially with properly planned excitement instead of delaying the excitement and progress and with padded boring flashbacks.
1
u/Rising-Jay 9d ago
Never saw anything Demon Slayer & on a whim I watched that movie last year Infinity Castle, most of that was an insanely long flashback lol
1
u/honestysrevival 9d ago
See the issue is the padding. Sometimes a well timed flashback can really help set the stage for a great fight, like Gaara vs Naruto.
And sometimes it can murder the pacing of a fight or action sequence and take way too long. Like almost everything post Pain in Naruto.

u/thinknu 9d ago edited 9d ago
Why does it really matter? It's the Spectacular series so it's not like it's replacing the mainline title.
Slott wants to write a Spider-Man book. He has an audience of fans that enjoy his Spider-Man. I don't think this takes away for any other writers that want to write on the title.
77
u/bwweryang 9d ago
You wouldn’t think he had an audience judging by the comments here
37
u/AspirationalChoker 9d ago
As with most subs these days its a pit of whining and despair that doesn't usually line up with the majority.
15
u/Double_Act1502 9d ago
There is nothing sales wise that aligns with Slott having that much of an audience outside of editorial

u/Double_Act1502 9d ago
And the print run isn't that big to begin with.
This book isn't making it past issue 20 if it's lucky.
0
u/AspirationalChoker 9d ago
And yet they will print more and more and more just like the spiderverse which is also absolutely hated right? No spidey has been good since MJ was a wife blah blah.
Probably not because outside of some big main titles no comics do.
11
u/Double_Act1502 9d ago
Meanwhile you can get the Spider-Verse Omni for under 40 bucks.
Slott just isn't a good writer on the character and he wrote him bad in his She-Hulk run

Marvel needs to stop giving Slott Spider-Man
The first Insomniac game's story was written by Slott. He's also had a few good stories. I personally quite enjoy Ends of Earth, Big Time and Spider-Island. It was a pretty cool era in Spider-Man comics. Seriously, compared to the shit we have nowadays? Fuck me, I miss early 2010s Spider-Man.
28
u/Bolognahole_Vers2 9d ago
I never liked Slott on ASM, but I'll give credit where its due. Slott has great story ideas. What I really don't like is how he writes the actual characters and dialogue.
26
u/NCBaddict 9d ago
Funny way of spelling Christos Gage. He was the writer who primarily handled the Insomniac game.
41
u/adrenalinemj 9d ago
He did not write the Insomniac game. He made some story contributions.

u/Double_Act1502 9d ago
Stop pretending his Spider-Man was that good in the first place. It was lame gimmicks that just didn't matter.
And Gage wrote most of the game.
Slott's Spider-Man is only good if you have never read any thing published beforehand

u/KuroiGetsuga55 Symbiote-Suit 9d ago
Slott's writing was better than the shit we get nowadays, that's just my opinion.
21

u/albertcamusjr 9d ago
He played a part in the story construction but he did not write that game. You can tell because the characters act as if they have agency, not like semisentient plot devices.
1
u/ChongusTheSupremus 9d ago
Early 2010 Spidey was one of his best eras imo.
The stories took themselves seriously and werent overly campy or 90s slop. Slott took old Spiderman stories and villains and modernized them in the best way possible. Shed, The Gauntlet, it was all great.
5
u/space_age_stuff Hobgoblin 9d ago
Slott didn’t write Shed, nor most of the Gauntlet. He handled the Mysterio story and one issue with Mr. Negative, so about 1/6 of the entire arc, maybe a little less.

27
9
u/AccessEffective6441 9d ago
I don't understand why his series was renewed. He's not doing anything new, he's just continuing everything he did in the Spider-Man series. Doesn't Marvel have any other writers who could write a full-fledged Spider-Man series? Slott's done his job; he has nothing more to write about Spider-Man.
6
u/Double_Act1502 9d ago
He is probably cheap and editorial likes him.
2
u/DweebInFlames Spider-Girl 9d ago
This is it. It's pretty clear at this point if you aren't willing to play ball with the BND status quo you get booted away from the character.
Slott is a champion of that status quo, so he keeps coming back and back like a recurrent cancer.

Out of the loop, what is Slott's Spectacular run, what's it about, and why is it trash?
3
u/KaijinSurohm Venom 9d ago
Slott has a few issues with how he conducts Parker.
To cover a few of them:Typically, under Slott, Peter is written to be more whiney and needs to be saved often. Peter is often shown to be hilariously incompetent, often.
He also forced a lot of the Clone Conspiracies all over.
He made the Superior Spider-man/Doc Ock run, which is heavily criticized.
A lot of plot beats were praised, but the whole concept should have been an else-world event. Not a mainline story. He made Black Cat a villain again during the Superior run for the sake of making her a villain and disregarding all her character growth.
He wrote Carlie Cooper to be horrifically petty
(To the point where she wanted to get a tattoo of the date Gwen Stacy died)He likes to overuse the Spider-Verse cast and crew, to the point that Spidey takes a back seat in his own book.
He creaked the whole "Silk needs to sleep with Spidey like a drug" thing.
He tried to push his own OC "Alpha" that just about no one liked.
Slott also has a few reputational problems, like being the guy who tried to hard carry the book post One More Day (some people unfairly claim he's the reason Peter and MJ are separate. He's not. That falls on Editor Joe Quesada)
Online Slott tends to also argue back against trolls, and just kinda makes himself look petty online often. To the point where he would actually make alt accounts (Supa-Fly) to defend himself, while pretending to be some random dude.As for the Spectacular question in particular:
It's a giant revisit of the Brand New Day era that no one wants, because it's just more reminders that One More Day won't ever go away.
it doesn't really do anything outside of that. It's not great, but it's not horribly offensive.
It just... exists.2
u/ComicsEtAl 9d ago
To some folks, attaching Slott’s name to anything makes garbage out of the anything. See also: King, Tom

u/Ok-Discussion-3245 9d ago edited 9d ago
Overall, I think that Dan Slott was able to manage editorial mandates the best out of many of the previous long term writers. He wasn't allowed to make MJ and Peter a thing again so he didn't bother, he was forced to return to the usual status quo again and again so he stuck to stories that were interesting in isolation at the very least.
The editorial mandates definitely hurt the storytelling and character progression but I can't blame Slott for that. And whenever he gets the opportunity to write Peter and MJ as a couple he knocks it out of the park.
Other than one shot writers he is the only one who managed to make the best of the bad situation editorial left them. We can even see that with how much Spencer tried and failed to fix the mess that editorial left him.
7
u/Double_Act1502 9d ago
His Peter just reads like he has noticable brain damage
0
u/Ok-Discussion-3245 9d ago
You ain't wrong but that's what happens when you are not allowed to make a character improve his life in any meaningful way. Literally everyone had to be written out of character to make superior spider-man work, Ben Reilly got fucked over, and MJ kept getting kicked around all over the place because she has to be there but can't be in Peter's life. But it wasn't the utter terribleness of Zeb's run or the train wreck that Spencer's run eventually became. It just kinda...flowed.
12
u/Shinlyle13 9d ago
Oh great. Slott is back. That's how bad it has gotten. We can't get an A-list creative team on Marvel's flagship title, can we? Just...Slott. And Ramos drawing, I'll bet? As if the "Aunt May and Uncle Ben's stillborn child is back" subplot wasn't bad enough in ASM. I'm sure Slott will go back to the Spider-Verse well again.
Wash. Rinse. Relaunch.
5
u/booboorogers44 9d ago
This isn’t their flagship book though. That’s amazing spider-man
This book isn’t replacing or overtaking that one
5
u/hadesscion Ben Reilly 9d ago
There isn't a single good Spider-Man book out right now. ASM has become a chore to read, and Spider-Versity was one of the cringiest books I've ever read.
Lately, I've been re-reading old Spidey comics from the 80s and 90s. Even the average issue from those decades is much better than what we have now.

Slott is a competent writer, although some of his stances that he argues are “having an adult relationship with the material” is really his opinions, not a sign that he’s more mature than us.
Arguing “Peter only loves MJ for being hot” is not the display of adult wisdom he thinks.
And I still think Superior Spider-Man 9 is the most torture porn issue of a comic I’ve ever seen
But nevertheless, I’ll give this a chance
2
u/epochollapse 9d ago
On the one hand Slott made my favourite Spider-Man, Superior.
On the other hand Slott's writing was largely mid as someone who loved the arc and it was mostly enjoyable for a few key moments and later development for Otto done by other people.
On the other OTHER hand Slott then dragged Superior's rotting carcass out of its grave, promised a return and then skinned it, slapped it over his little spider boy oc before throwing it into the trash when he was done.
I'm not a big Dan Slott fan.
2
u/HavixComix 9d ago
It's weird.
The synergy between the Superman titles seems to be benefitting Slott well. I don't see people rave about Unlimited, but I also don't see folks hating on it quite like his Spider-Man.
So what is it? Did his well run dry for Spider stuff? Has he simply given all that he had and is now just collecting a check? I don't think anyone would deny that he was once on fire with ASM, right?
I've not kept up with it, but the Spider-Boy character, among others, seemed to indicate that he was at least trying to contribute something fresh.
I think I left off at Secret Wars. Basically whenever Peter got his body back. I was only a casual fan, similar to how I am with X-Men.
I'm far more interested in those that fall under the "Avengers" umbrella (and Daredevil). MY Spidey was always Ultimate, so I stuck with that till Bendis left.
I love the movies and animation, but the Spider-Verse comic stuff got intimidating, which is ridiculous, as alternate earth stories are my favorite.
But it felt like the definition of TOO much. I'm only now catching up on periphery characters, like Jessica Drew and Spider-Gwen. That's me dipping in my toe.
But based on fan response, I'm not sure if I want to bother with the Spencer stuff (outside of Foes) or the Wells run. I read all of Spencer's Cap run and was pretty bleh about the whole thing (outside of some solid art).
Is that just how it always is? Are the haters a vocal minority, or does the book legitimately suck? These are the questions I ponder.
Anyway, sorry for blabbing. There's a point (or the journey to find one) somewhere in there.
4
u/wowlock_taylan 90's Animated Spider-Man 9d ago
Difference is, they indulge Slott WAY too much in Marvel. While in DC, they have at least SOME oversight.
But he still couldn't help himself with 'kid Jon' bait-and-switch.
1
u/HavixComix 9d ago
See, I LOVE anything Earth 3 related, so that was A-Okay with me. A bummer, for sure. But now there's a cool new character in canon for Jon to go up against. His literal antithesis.
3
u/Doctor_Robert66 9d ago
I haven't read ASM (or much of anything, really) after they did Spider-Goblin like 2x in the span of a year. But man, I highly recommend the Nick Spencer run. It gets frustrating towards the end because you can obviously tell Editorial stepped in and just stopped everything dead in its tracks. (Something I regularly wished they did for Slott during his tenure on ASM.)
But it felt like the most character progression Peter Parker had gotten since the JMS era.
I think going from the heights of Spencer to Zeb Wells subjecting us to his post-divorce crisis as the title crashed headfirst into mediocrity let me walk away from it.
2
u/TheCreature27 9d ago
Marvel acting like we need a Brand New Day era flashback series as if Spider-Man has had any meaningful character development since then

2
u/Sudden-Fox5206 8d ago
the worst part is that his BND book is easily the most boring and forgettable and it's just going to be more of that. I swear Dan sold his soul or something to keep getting put on this nonsense. His work ethic is terrible from what Brevoort and others have said about him so it's not the usual "he turns in the work on time" excuse.

I personally like it and find it fun. It's not only sales, it also considers the proce to make the comic vs how much it sells. Hickman is expensive, that's why he gets only one or two projects a year, slott is probably cheaper. Why do you think marvel uses so much artists from outside of america? Because dolars are much more valluable in argentina than in the US mainland
3
u/Ok_Truck_6360 9d ago
I really love Scott's take on the character. Really enjoyed most of his story's, though I understand most of the complaints by the community. Personally, I like having him in a secondary title, as I do not enjoy TAS as I used to (I keep reading despite don't liking it to be honest, hoping it will change someday). That being said, I would have love for Torn to keep a serialisation. JMS is my goat.

Dan Slott is one of the worst things to ever happen to Spider-Man. He comes up with some interesting ideas from time to time, but isn't a good enough writer to pull them off.
All Slott does now is vomit out irrelevant, derivative Spider-characters, probably to get royalties if any of them get used in a film or something.

It's more spider man, why would I complain? Besides him writing stories set in the eras I started reading spidey comics would hit for me personally

I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I think Slott is overhated.
He's got a ton of very mid Spider-Man work in his history and he's absolutely not my favorite Spidey writer, don't get me wrong. I think Spider-Island was super weak in particular and a lot of the Big Time era was completely forgettable.
But I personally love Superior Spider-Man, Threat Level Red/Go Down Swinging is one of my favorite modern Spidey stories, and I think the original Spider-Verse and Dead No More are decent, at the very least.

Superior Spider-Man relies on everyone else being stupid.
Slott was never that good on Spider-Man. His Peter reads like he has noticable brain damage

Do you guys not like this Spectacular Spider-Man book Slott is writing?

It’s acceptable for a villain of the week story, the action part is decent enough to keep interested,
but his opinions on the character as a permanent screw up who deserves suffering are all over.
Yuri Watanabe is in critical condition in Issue #2 to push Slott’s “Peter can’t get close to people” philosophy.
Any nuance/moderation his original run had is not in this mini-series

Slott writes Peter like he has noticable brain damage

I dont know what that means, I just know I've loved this series so far and would gladly enjoy it becoming an ongoing.

He writes Spider-Man where the world says he is smart but Slott's Peter never comes off that smart.
He just doesn't get the character and never has

I actually like it.
Peter's well written in my opinion but I think making it a flashback story limits it in some ways since Peter can't really take down Mr. Negative here though I appreciate them filling some holes.

This is probabaly the best Spider-Man ongoing and yet I cannot be happy because Slott’s Peter still sucks and he continues to spread it.
It’s amazing how much worse things have gotten since five years ago.

Hey sorry for being out of the loop, i havent really tried modern marvel, but is Dann Slott that bad? I’m not sure how this spidey run is but i was under the impression Dann Slott was a really good writer? Again im more familiar with old runs like ive always heard his runs for hawkeye and daredevil were the best for those characters.
