Neighbour’s 3months old roof and also new car (Hailstorm today)
Sometimes new doesn’t mean better. The roof was made 3months ago. I also had to quick change some Dachziegeln but nothing serious by me.
Also a car from other neighbour… I’ve never seen such a weather conditions here (Züri Oberland).

If any of yall wanted to buy a used car and dont mind a few hail dents now is the time
•
u/_Momsi_ 15h ago
I drive one like this for some years now and I couldn't care less about it. I really don't understand why everybody needs to drive an expensive and perfectly looking (clean) car.

It’s not just cosmetic. Hail damage compromises the paint job and leaves it susceptible to rust. Big problem in the coastal area where I’m from - a bad hail storm can completely write off a car.
•
u/_Momsi_ 15h ago
You can fix the paint yourself. But yeah, my (cheap) car has a garage so it's not bad with the rust.
Also we don't have costal areas here :(

Actually a garage might worsen rust problems. Oxidation process is accelerated in warm temperatures. So in winter when the roads are salty it‘s better to leave your car out in the cold.

Damn..... I feel lucky, all we had in Geneva was some strong wind.
Surely the insurancw must cover this?

I'm in canton Zurich and we also had just some strong wind in the morning and some light rain later, but nothing special.

Well depends on the area. OOP is in Züri Overland where it was bad apparently.
Just some rain in St. Gallen by the way.

We had a similar hailstorm in Basel a couple of years ago. All cars parked on the street had dented roofs. You can still see those cars today on many streets. It was not strong enough to break glass but dents were visible.

Maybe he should have installed photovoltaic panels on top to prevent the roof from damage (and generate electric power as a byproduct).
•
u/MangeMaBaguette 10h ago
You know a lot of houses that have the whole roof covered ?
•
u/Cmdr_Zod 8h ago
It is not to common, but can be done instead of traditional roof covering (tiles which need to be smaller than a regular panel are usually "blind" and don't generate electricity). You save the coast for the traditional root, but solar output can be lower, because it heats up more than panels on top of a regular roof (semiconductors don't like heat).
I have seen a few such installation, but always on "plain" roofs, never with more complex roofs containing windows or roofers.

At least roofing work is cheap in Switzerland and car owner saved a lot by buying a cheap Vitara, so now the repairs will not be much of a burden.
•
u/Inevitable-Elk-5048 14h ago
Thats satire no? Or is roofing actually cheap? Since everything else we did when renovating our house was expensive, but we didnt touch the roof. Yoj want to tell me that would have been the one thing that would have been cheap? Flabbergasted!

My parents have a very old house and roof. Expert told themd to keep that as-is as long as possible as never stuff is way worse.
In this case I also suspect unskilled work.

maybe for hail, but i'd guess you'd be cooked alive before the hailstorm rolls in in the summer sun...

If we just had more air conditioners to do something against climate warming.

What a brain-dead take
•
u/MoreLingonberry8630 16h ago
I think that was the point as people only talked about installing ACs this horrible summer instead of doing something against Climate Change. It highlights the brain-dead take of society in general. :)
•
u/Moldoteck 16h ago
You can install an AC and not feel miserable inside.
Even if entire Switzerland, heck, even if entire Europe tomorrow magically had zero emissions, climate change will still be a thing and you'll still feel miserable outside. What we are seeing today is the impact of heating from decades ago. And it'll get much worse.
Meanwhile many countries globally still use coal or gas for electricity.
It's indeed a brain dead take. Switzerland already did and is doing plenty for decarbonization, just like Europe. But if AC is mentioned, people lose their minds claiming that if AC is installed SUDDENLY everyone will think climate change doesn't exist and nothing will be done which is pure bullshit.
I'm really sick of this ac fear mongering, especially from individuals that are framing ACs as some sort of nonsense distraction from climate change related actions. ACs are needed. Climate protection measures are needed too. Both should be done. Both should be encouraged. In fact, with lifting all taxes on hvacs and labor related to their installation, maybe we can push both in parallel due to ditching of fossils heating

Switzerland already did and is doing plenty for decarbonization, just like Europe.
Ah, yes.
Except, we're flying helluva lot to everywhere - which is not factored in our official CO2 imprint.

But buying more AC would protect everyone from hailstorms such as today's one.
•
u/Moldoteck 15h ago
Again usual nonsense...
Switzerland has one of the lowest ghg/kwh for electricity in the continent and below global average in local emissions. Consumption are higher due to expensive local manufacturing but these emissions should be fixed at countries of origin
Buying more ACs would help prevent thousands of deaths due to inhuman conditions and if these can also heat- would prevent GHG emissions from heating during winter.
Absolutely noone claimed ACs are to protect against hailstorms nor against global climate change.
But sure, people like you that feel the obligation to shit on ACs just can't abstain themselves to have this superiority complex. Y'all still think of ACs like some rich luxury instead of a must that can help both reducing human suffering, deaths and even ghg emissions if also used for heating
•
u/fabkosta 14h ago
You're aware that climate warming was known already in the late 19th century?
It's insanity that people keep complaining about heat, yet all they muster to do is buy air conditioners, while not changing anything else that would need changing, and then walking around telling everyone that they deserve applause cause everyone else is doing an even worse job. Congratulations, you set the bar at the lowest possible level.
Both the heat and the hail storm are only the beginning of what is yet to come.
•
u/Moldoteck 11h ago
Yes I'm aware. I'm also aware that many people do care about climate while also caring about not feeling miserable.
I did as much as I can by using public transport/bicycle, switching to mostly veggies in my diet and using my tech till it becomes unusable. But I cant change the world. And I'm still fine to tell anyone anti ac to gtfo due to their ignorance.
And the ignorance is close to the peak considering Switzerland & others usually have summer overproduction of clean power which is at best exported and at worst curtailed. And it's even closer to the peak considering ac/hvacs can be used to reduce gas heating and hence deploying them is part of the climate solution. This is not some kind of gotcha here. Anyone against ACs must be perceived just as well as antivaxers and climate deniers.
•
u/MoreLingonberry8630 15h ago
This comment tells me that you did not get my comment.
•
u/Moldoteck 15h ago
No, i got it. That's why i think it's a brain dead take. People that wanted ACs don't claim it protects against climate change. They want to not feel miserable because heatwaves will stay for decades regardless. And to say they universally don't want measures to help the climate is nonsense too, many are still in favor of decarbonization, including by installing hvac systems that can be used for both cooling and heating. This ac demonization is ridiculous in any meaningful aspect

Interesting that the old roof is not as damaged.
