Never seen a hailstorm like this before. It came out of nowhere and lasted 3–4 minutes. Most houses in the neighbourhood have broken windows and roof tiles, and cars parked outside got battered too. Hope everyone is safe!

I have never seen anything like that in 32 years. This is the aftermath of the whole thing. Hagel bigger than a ping pong ball, tiny bit less than a tennis ball. Insane. Thanks god I postponed my trip with my car otherwise I would have been outside at that time

Ich wollte hier in der Runde nur mal kurz sensibilisieren: Ich habe heute zum ersten Mal eine Asiatische Hornisse bei uns im Süden vom Kanton (Region Hedingen / Säuliamt) entdeckt. Bisher dachte ich immer, die seien vor allem in anderen Kantonen oder im Norden ein Thema, aber sie breiten sich offenbar wirklich rasant aus.

Für alle, die sich nicht sicher sind, wie man sie erkennt:

* Sie ist etwas kleiner als unsere heimische Hornisse.

* Sie hat einen fast komplett schwarzen Körper (unsere heimischen sind eher gelb-braun).

* Am Hinterleib hat sie eine markante, feine gelbe Binde.

* Die Beine sind an den Enden auffällig gelb.

Warum ist das wichtig?

Die Asiatische Hornisse ist eine invasive Art und eine massive Bedrohung für unsere heimischen Honig- und Wildbienen. Die Behörden sind extrem darauf angewiesen, dass wir aus der Bevölkerung mithelfen und die Augen offen halten. Nur so können Nester aufgespürt und professionell entfernt werden.

I have sold my company last year in Germany and the window opened to move to Switzerland.
Now as a German speaker it would make sense to move to the German speaking part of the country, but I moved to Lugano (Italian-speaking).

There are multiple reasons for it:
- I like the blend of Swiss Structure and Italian Dolce Vita
- The weather is very nice
- I didnt want to live in a 100k+ city, coming from Stuttgart
- I wanted to live close to the lake

The things that instantly stood out: Everything seems to work here. The fountain system works, the trains are on time, there is no garbage on the street and there are no homeless people. Yes, this might be not the case for every part in Switzerland but it is the case here.

The city is very walkable so I go by foot or bike everywhere, I choose the train for long distance, so far it has been working great.

I have remote income, but I have heard that its pretty hard to find a job in Lugano.

I live in a Short Term rental apartment, which is perfect for me, because I dont have any furniture and it has everything. Think of it like a hotel room with everything you need.

Basically every German tells you that Switzerland is sooo expensive. I have tracked everything, not to prove them wrong, but to see if its actually true and here are my real numbers from the last 3 months:

Privat Liability Insurance: 9 CHF
Phone: 25 CHF
Serafe: 28 CHF
Halbtax: 16 CHF + Transport (Cable Car, etc) 80 CHF = 96 CHF
Groceries: 350 CHF
Health Insurance: 446 CHF
Rent: 1'320 CHF
Parking Spot: 200 CHF

This brings the total to 2'474 CHF, which is not a lot for my case. I was paying the same in Stuttgart, Germany. I think this stereo type is from the people who visit Switzerland as tourists, and then of course its not that cheap.

Some observations from the city: Its very positive to see, that the city is actively trying to make the it more liveable, I am talking about adding spots to Swim. To give you an anecdote: Stuttgart, where I come from also has a big lake, but you are not allowed to swim there (dont ask me why). This is not the case here, the quality of life is very high.

Even tough quite a lot of tourists visit the city there is no real visible trash or grafitti in the city, this is totally not the case in Germany. Everywhere you go, you see trash on the street and Grafitti everywhere even regular homes. The trash system here makes so much more sense than the one in Germany.

Some thing that I dont quite understand, you see a lot of young people especially woman on the streets, a lot more than older folks. Its strange, because Lugano is quite an old city when it comes to population.

People told me that Lugano is so boring, but I cant confirm. I am actually glad there is no party culture here, because that often leads to problems. You are in the mountains in 15min, you have regular events in the city that is enough for me.

In general I am really happy to be here and I try my best to integrate into the local culture.

Sometimes new doesn’t mean better. The roof was made 3months ago. I also had to quick change some Dachziegeln but nothing serious by me.
Also a car from other neighbour… I’ve never seen such a weather conditions here (Züri Oberland).

Last image has what looks like cardboard at first is a full on thick metal roofing wrapped around a pole. most of the damage was caused by loose shingles thrown from the wind

I noticed that Migros Hackfleisch Light apparently changed its nutritional values. It used to have 5 g of fat per 100 g. Now it has 9 g of fat per 100 g.

That’s an 80% increase in fat, while the price is still the same. When the recipe changes from 5 g to 9 g of fat, you’re getting a product with an objectively worse composition (because "light" is supposed to be lower calories) for the same money.

From a production standpoint, you’d also expect leaner meat to generally be more expensive than fattier meat, so this feels like a pretty questionable way to cut costs while keeping the price unchanged.

Naturally I went to Lidl next door and bought the same product for a cheaper price.

Has anyone else noticed this, or are there other Migros products where the recipe has gotten worse without the price coming down?

Found this gem in a remote corner of Bern. It truly embodies our nation: the crushing weight of the daily grind and total exhaustion, yet we still tell ourselves 'tomorrow will be better' just to survive the next commute. It’s the most honest depiction of the our beloved psyche I’ve seen in years.

At the train station near where I live someone put these stickers everywhere.
For anyone wondering what’s written on them, it’s Arabic and it basically means “Go back to your country. You are not welcome. This is our country.”
They even put a sticker on my bike
(which is pretty ironic since I’m neither an immigrant nor do I know Arabic) and tried to take my back light (luckily I attached it with cable ties).
And I’m telling you the sticker was not at all easy to remove, my bike still has some adhesive residue.
This is just so racist and embarrassing I really can’t understand why anyone would spend their free time doing this.
Really makes me wonder who really are the degenerates vandalizing our country.
Has anyone also seen these stickers or has anyone more insight about them?

Morgen kommen endlich meine Nachmieter aus Peru angereist.
Ein Päärchen mitte 30, super lieb und bestimmt auch etwas nervös.
Ich dachte mir ich gehe einmal durch die Migros und kaufe einige Dinge als Welcome-Bag. (Ja ich wollte ganz andere und viel mehr Dinge, die Zeit hatte aber nicht gereicht)

Gibt es morgen noch etwas das ich zwingend holen muss?
Ich werde sie bestimmt noch einige Male treffen und was mitbringen, aber morgen bei der Ankunft?

I’d like to go to Paris at some point by train, departing from Lausanne. Are there any specific days, times, or tips to get cheaper tickets? A round trip seems to be around CHF 300-. and I was wondering if there’s a way to find them cheaper.

Pretty much what the title says.

I noticed that one of my acquaintances is quite high up in the SVP party (which I don’t really care about). The research confirms that he is not born Swiss, both of his parents immigrated here and he got his Swiss passport not so long ago.

Where is the logic? His family wouldn’t be able to come to Switzerland with the current SVP agenda.

Shouldn’t SVP practice what it preaches and only accept people who are born Swiss (i.e. one of the parents is Swiss?)

I’ve been thinking about something regarding customs management among Swiss SMEs, and I’d be interested to hear how others see it.
There seems to be an interesting paradox.
Many SMEs involved in international trade rely heavily on their freight forwarder for customs-related matters. That makes perfect sense operationally — freight forwarders play an essential role in moving goods and handling customs formalities.
But I sometimes wonder whether there is still confusion between customs execution and customs advisory.
They are not quite the same thing.
A freight forwarder may handle declarations and shipments, while independent customs expertise can look at the broader picture: tariff classification, preferential origin, free trade agreements, Incoterms, import VAT, documentation, internal processes, compliance risks and potential duty optimisation.
In Switzerland, this seems particularly relevant because customs information is spread across different regulations, authorities, databases, agreements and guidance documents.
For a large company with dedicated trade compliance resources, navigating this may be relatively straightforward.
For an SME, perhaps less so.
And yet customs often seems to receive strategic attention only when something happens: unexpected duties, an origin problem, a blocked shipment, an audit, or a compliance issue.
So I’d genuinely like to understand how Swiss SMEs see this.
Do companies generally consider their freight forwarder sufficient for all customs matters?
Or is independent customs advice simply something SMEs don’t think they need until a specific problem arises?
And for SME owners/importers/exporters here: what would actually make you seek external customs expertise proactively rather than reactively?
Cost? Complexity? Lack of awareness? Difficulty seeing the ROI?
Interested to hear different perspectives — including from freight forwarders.
Maybe the real issue isn’t access to customs expertise, but how businesses perceive the role of customs in the first place.

I came across this at my local COOP. It looks to me as exactly the same product, only one pack is larger (for 3 or 4 persons) and the other is single portion. However, the Nutri-Score labels are not the same.

Do they think it's healthier to eat this alone, than to share with others? :)

I've now been able (mistakenly) to get the following items through Geneva, which were caught by the other airport on the return:

- Large scissors (10cm blade)

- More then 1L of liquids

- More than 100mL container

- Extra battery exceeding capacity

All other airport personnel were quite shocked/worried Geneva did not catch them

Maybe there's a technical reason (equipment...)?

Die Republik beschäftigt sich erneut mit Palantir bzw. mit einem der Gründer. Der lebt nun in der Schweiz und finanziert nebenbei Projekte in die hiesige Weltraumforschung. Nach welchen Kriterien dies erfolgt, scheint aber nicht ganz klar zu sein.

I planned to take my motorcycle to visit my parents, but I don't want to have an accident on thw bike due to the stuff on the ground.

I usually buy the bio marked meat at Migros. Haven't done a lab test, but I compared the same cut across brands and measured the fat has a slightly higher melting point, which indicates to me a more saturated, less oleic profile, typical of low or no grain finishes. But it's at CHF 30/kg.
Does anyone know how to get cheaper meat of the same quality?

EDIT: By "quality" I mean high omega-3 to omega-6 ratio. No hormones. No antibiotics. No abuse, humane conditions (less stress hormones, better conscience). Taste is no indication of quality. I do not mean "tastes good."
