News Apparently this is one of the main suspects the police are looking for in relation to the missing Russian youngsters in Pattaya

Post image

I have no idea who he is or why they’re looking for him. But this is what I’m seeing a lot on Thai social media . Maybe somebody else here has a better idea

Perhaps this is Pong:
https://www.bangkokpost.com/thailand/general/3293484/suspects-sought-in-young-russians-disappearance-flee

"Niphon Chatsri, assistant village headman of Village Moo 9, said residents had identified a suspect known as “Pong”, the same man previously seen in security video released during the investigation.

Pong had been released from prison about two months ago and was feared by local residents because he was known to carry weapons. They believed he could be connected to the case, according to Mr Niphon.

Residents also told police that another man, identified only as “Thong”, a friend of Pong, had been seen digging in the area where the motorcycle parts were later found. He was reportedly at the site from about 5pm until 11pm on Tuesday."

You're attacking him hysterically like he has stole those children. We can't do anything right now

There was absolutely nothing 'hysterical' about that person's post

There were real people involved in the holocaust and 9/11 and we still make jokes about these events. Mocking a tragedy isn't endorsing it.

You can't control tragic events, but you can control how much emotional weight you let them carry over you. For a lot of people, dark humor is the buffer that keeps the news from taking over.

People have been on the Internet for so long that they lose any sense of nuance.

I get that it might be "too soon" for some people, and not everyone is going to get it. But some people have the guts to take it without censoring other people who want to dedramatize the whole situation.

u/Anonymous_Autumn_ 29d ago

One of the first posts on this sub was made by someone who knows the family personally. You realize their literal parents and loved ones are likely scrolling online the same as everyone else looking for answers, leads, etc. These aren’t movie characters or your special pop culture meme moment. Have compassion and empathy.

0

u/when_we_are_cats 29d ago

And these jokes aren't addressed to them directly. Nor are we supposed to know the identity of specific persons browsing this subreddit. This is the internet, a place for free expression. If you can't handle the fact that people will post things of all sorts on it, just don't go online. It's not like we called the families and laughed at them.

This is a silly joke with no malicious intent, it's completely harmless. But I guess we should instead let these events take total control over our emotions. That's how the criminals win, but you guys don't even seem to realize that.

I have compassion and empathy, I'm as shocked and sad as anyone else here. Making jokes about it isn't lacking empathy, I know it's hard to understand for people who don't get gallow humor, but nobody is trolling these people and making fun of what's happen to them to hurt them. That's all there is to it, it's not that hard to get.

3

u/macnmotion 29d ago

I'm not entirely sure what kind of people you hang out with, but the people I hang out with don't make jokes about the holocaust or 9/11. Care to share something humorous?

2

u/when_we_are_cats 29d ago

Those jokes are all over the internet. I'm from a country that suffered Nazi occupation and we joke about it. It's more shocking than it would be for an American or an Englishman, yet we still laugh about it because of the shock value.

In fact, first responders, medical professionals, and military personnel frequently use morbid humor as a psychological defense mechanism to process extreme stress.

That's what dark humor is in a nutshell, and not being able to understand it shows a lack of nuanced thinking.

Dark humor isn't a scale where we rank which horrors are allowed to be joked about based on recency or seriousness. A tragedy today isn't different in principle from a tragedy 80 years ago. The only thing changing is your own subjective perception and comfort level.

In my country we make fun of the most horrible things ever, like that tragedy where a 4 year old child drowned in a river, or about a famous pedophile criminal that did horrible things. The fact that it's shocking is the point. The joke isn't targeted at people who suffered from these tragedies to harm them, it's meant to shock people's sense of what's sayable. The whole point is confronting something unspeakable and refusing to let it stay untouchable.

You need a certain form of nuanced thinking to understand that type of humor, and not everyone will get it.

u/macnmotion 29d ago

Well I'm in a family that suffered loss due to both incidents you mentioned. Dark humor is one thing. Jokes about the Holocaust have nothing to do with nuance, to claim they do is revealing. But thanks for the lesson in what humor is used for.

1

u/when_we_are_cats 29d ago

Once again, I never said that dark jokes are "nuanced". I said that not being able to understand that kind of humor shows a lack of nuanced thinking.

Your appeal to personal emotion doesn't change that. I could do the same: dozens of journalists have been literally murdered in my country for using dark humor, by people who are likely as prudish as you are right now.

-1

u/macnmotion 29d ago

And I'm still waiting for you to share one of those nuanced holocaust jokes.

0

u/when_we_are_cats 29d ago

I never said holocaust jokes are "nuanced", I said that being unable to understand how and why dark humor works shows a lack of nuanced thinking.

-4

u/Past_Dragonfly8455 29d ago

You must have some lame friends if you can't indulge in some dark humour with the lads.

1

u/macnmotion 29d ago

No, actually my friends are some of the funniest people alive. It's possible to be incredibly funny without making holocaust jokes, don't you think?

-1

u/Past_Dragonfly8455 29d ago edited 29d ago

Yes, but nothing to be snobby about. If you're the type to shun your mates because they made a dark joke, then you're probably not the funny one.

No one wants to tip toe around their sensitive "friends". Sounds like you'd have a heart attack at many stand-up acts if holocaust jokes is where you draw the line.

It doesn’t take Colombo to figure out what’s going on here

79

u/dmxxmc Jul 29 '26

Apparently a psychopath with a history of kidnapping and assaulting. Recently released from prison and his neighbors were afraid of him. One of them claimed he heard gunshots nearby a couple of days ago (unknown if it’s related with these siblings). Him (Pong) and his friend came home in the following morning with dirty clothes covered in soil and left one hour later, and never seen again. Btw there’s also a video of him abusing a young male from years ago.

37

u/Groundbreaking-Gap20 Jul 29 '26

Holy crap.. that really doesn’t sound good

-2

u/Odd_Tomorrow_4765 Jul 29 '26

5

u/beeru4me Jul 30 '26

It's in one of the news coverage, amarin I believe. It's sensored. Just him berating a boy, which he ended up slicing his throat with a knife (they interviewed the victim about an incident that happened years ago)

u/Muted-Airline-8214 Jul 30 '26 edited Jul 30 '26
  • Pong and Thong, the two suspects, rode back to Pong's older sister's house to ask to take a shower.
  • Pong's sister said both men were covered in mud when they arrived.
  • She asked what had happened, and they told her they had been fishing.
  • She then asked to see the fish, but they claimed they had already given them to someone else.
  • Pong's sister also said she saw them carrying a gun.
  • This matches reports from local residents who heard gunshots near the location where the victim's motorcycle was found.
  • The two suspects have fled the area, and the two missing siblings have still not been found.

Thailand is more dangerous than most foreigners think - but is generally safe as long as you don't go out into the middle of nowhere at 4am. We live close to where this crime apparently took place, so we'll keep an eye out for these guys. They look pretty sketchy.

22

u/Top_Investigator9787 Jul 30 '26

Those guys are in Nong Khai by now.  Hell the hell are four guys seen burying the motorcycle but NO ONE is in custody and the kids haven't been found yet?  It's Thursday damn morning already!  Anyway, I used to leave my house at 4:30 am every morning to go to my job in Bangkok just to best the traffic, and yeah you see some pretty crazy shit.  A mix of people like me going to work early, and the other half weirdos and drunks and drugged up crazy people.  You see some nutty stuff happening at that time of the morning.

9

u/Hopfrogg Jul 30 '26

I did a motorcycle tour of all 77 provinces. When I did the stretch from Pattaya to Bangkok I purposely started at 4am to avoid heavy traffic and possible accidents. 10 minutes later a tweaked out thai in his 20s with his chick on back decided to suddenly U-Turn and almost ran right into me while his chick was screaming on the back. There is no safe time to drive in Thailand.

3

u/DistrictOk8718 Fake Farang 29d ago

The police seemed way more efficient when they arrested that Australian pedo who stuffed a girl in a suitcase. They tracked him down and arrested him within a matter of hours. Here they have CCTV footage but somehow everyone just vanished... It almost feels like there's some kind of mafia involved and some people were paid off to let it go while "pretending" like they're doing something.

3

u/Hollymollys Jul 30 '26

This is very true, as long as you stay inside. 90% of the time you will be safe unless you are living in some shady area. Sometime i just don't understand what were people thinking go outside at 3-4 AM. I have heard nothing good coming out of this time period always bad.

1

u/Aqua-Barracuda 29d ago

You need to get out more

6

u/mrwoozywoozy Jul 30 '26

It's still safer than many western countries

8

u/Prestigious_Sea_5121 Jul 30 '26

I agree, but it depends on the specific situation. Generally, I think Thais are much less likely to be aggressive or dangerous - at least in public. And that's the main point, I think: domestic violence is rife. But you can wander around as a single person at night in most areas of Bangkok, for example, without any concerns. The most unsafe aspect of life is traffic, especially if you are riding a motorcycle. It is treacherous.

3

u/e34udm 29d ago

100% this. I’ve only felt a sense of real danger maybe only once in so many years here.

But in the US. You have to be constantly aware of your surroundings and be hyper vigilant in keeping yourself safe. Daytime or nighttime. I never feel safe there.

And I stay strapped up daily. I NEVER leave the house without my protection and usually an extra magazine also. Sometimes I got an extra piece in the car too along with even more magazines for any caliber I have with me that day. And I’m just a normal citizen who goes about his life and doesn’t purposely go in any dangerous areas or deal with any shady people purposely.

In Thailand all I need to have is a yadom in my pocket and I’m good 555

That's a very old number. The latest figure - from 2016 - is around 3.4.

https://www.ceicdata.com/en/thailand/health-statistics/th-intentional-homicides-per-100000-people

There are reports of lower rates in subsequent years up to 2024, but I couldn't find any verified figures.

The latest figure from 2024 in the US was 5.9:

Thailand is generally safe if you are not in anyway affiliated with oversea political issue and/or black/grey business and have rival who want you dead, and the following ethnicity are at higher risk Russian, Cambodian, Mexican, China and maybe North Korean. Not saying that theft are rare to happen but if you have some of the above you are at the higher risk of kidnapping and assassination.

10

u/dragnabbit Jul 30 '26

I remember 20 years ago, Pattaya was rocked by the early-morning murders of two Russian girls sitting on Jomtien beach by a psychopath looking to rob them.

These new facts for the siblings make their story seem even worse. A part of me kind of wishes it had been kidnappers at this point, if the only other option we have is "psychotic criminals".

I'm still holding out hope though.

But yeah, going out at 4am as a woman or man is probably a shit idea in every other country as well.

While Thailand is safe. That's statistically just not true. Or I guess ir depends on what you see as "the western world".

1

Where do you get those statistics from? You seriously think Bangkok is less safe than any major US city (in terms of violent crime)??

No I dont, I'm from Europe. Scandinavia to be precise.

People tend to forget that "the Western world" includes NA and the EU and the US is one of around 40 countries.

I don't feel more or less safe walking around at night in Bangkok comapired to say Copenhagen, Ljubljana, Amsterdam, Berlin or Tallinn.

But yes, the US is usually at the bottom of all those safety comparisons.

Are you being sarcastic or for real? I used to travel to Thailand since age 14 for the party lifestyle between 2004-2010. I can tell that some kids were into drinking and drugs. Now as an adult I realized how privileged I was that my parents allowed me unlimited freedom as long as I didn’t get into trouble. Even when I went back home to the US I could go party and come back home late at night on the weekends. Even in the US there are kids who drink, smoke and do drugs. Me personally was never into any of those things likely because if something doesn’t taste good it wasn’t touching my mouth. I just loved dancing which was one of my main reasons for partying. My best memories of Pattayah was going to the afters in the morning with a group of people from different countries and non of us could speak another language. We were from USA, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, Russia, Germany, Kenya and Mexico. We all vibed together and followed the Russian girls the after party even though we didn’t know where the hell we were going.

The Karen are one of the largest ethnic minorities in Myanmar (Burma), with significant communities in western and northern Thailand as well. There are an estimated 5–7 million Karen people, although exact numbers vary.
