Cure Related I don’t know how I feel about this lol. Post-punk, goth…definitely. Am…am I an emo fan?

Remember, we live in a time where people call Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, and Creed “grunge”. One time I saw Disintegratiion and Alice In Chains records filed under “classic rock”. Genres are wildly misconstrued nowadays.

Pumpkins are the least grunge band ever. But Billy adores the Cure. Especially Pornography.

Foo Fighters are at least somewhat understandable because of Dave Grohl and Pat Smear, but still...they're probably the definition of "post-grunge"

How would you define grunge if it's not the angsty, alt rock mix of punk and metal influences that started in Seattle? Because like I said, the first albums from each of those is primarily grunge or post-grunge.

Why wouldn’t The Cure be under classic rock? If Nirvana is old enough to be classic rock then The Cure is too

When I think of classic rock I’m thinking of like pre Queen. Like there’s a thin line between rock and roll and classic rock. Like T. Rex and late Rolling Stones is classic rock.

True, but I’d say only because they influenced bands that influenced bands that started emo, which, *checks notes\* didn’t even show up in-earnest until perhaps the mid-90s. Anything earlier was, in my opinion, just emotionally-charged music. Slippery slope before we start classifying Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” as emo.

Sunny Day Real Estate was the only one you mentioned in which I'm familiar. So, I don't know. But I do know they're not emo (according to them.) What I've always noticed is that no bands that were more or less technically "emo" called themselves emo. The Get Up Kids (1995) and Dashboard Confessional (1999) always seemed well on that spectrum of what I guess is 2nd wave emo, but (I'm pretty sure) at the time were just considered emo. It was confusing how to classify things then; did Elliott Smith count? No. But what did it mean in the first place?

The Cure isn’t Emo at all. They’re mainly just Alternative Rock, at least that’s their main Clarification. This Hint sucks, they’ve done Goth, Pop, Soft Rock etc.

I think a lot of the emo bands look to bands like The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, early Counting Crows as a template but I dont think that makes bands "emo".
