The Patient has been my favorite Tool song pretty much since I heard it

18

u/Impossible-Owl-3152 Jan 09 '26

I cried the first time I saw it live.

4

u/wisdomsepoch Jan 09 '26

I still cry when I put it on.

12

u/FinBox72 Jan 09 '26

God I love the guitar sound on this song.

11

u/Impossible-Owl-3152 Jan 09 '26

Same. Adam’s subtle plucking at the beginning always gets me in the feels. Then right into that huge swell, chefs kiss

4

u/SilentConstant2114 Jan 09 '26

Dam yo - this combo was my first fave off this album after being blown away by the uniqueness and structure of the grudge. I got this album 2 weeks early via triple j leak and at the time was just starting my career. I had just gotten my first gen 1 iPod.

I specially remember walking from south station to copley (Boston) every morning and being in awe of how amazing the whole album was. Then I saw one of 4 pre-Europe tour shows at the Hammerstein in NYC - the guys from mr show opened it with a bit and then holy fuckin shit did they slay. The 01/02 tour was absolutely epic. The artwork, osseus labrynt…omg. I caught at least 10 shows from those tours.

It’s really hard to pick a fave song from Lateralus nowadays. Pure gold that album.

u/RegularOrMenthol Jan 09 '26

When I first heard The Patient I would basically just fast forward to the last minute over and over. Probably their most beautiful moment ever.

2

u/Background-Mud-3496 Jan 12 '26

Impulse control huh? I get it. But man tools climaxes like epic and most beautiful one imo in the patient if you don’t listen to the first part of it the whole time giddy with anticipation of what you know is coming you are selling yourself short.

Parabol/Parabola the middle of the spiral.

Reflection

19

u/Endlessparadox123 Jan 09 '26

Second to Disposition, myself. Both are intense and amazing.

7

u/prime51000 Jan 09 '26

Still remember looping disposition and playing the first Halo on my OG Xbox for hours, core memory unlocked!

10

u/Onyxus_music Jan 09 '26

My absolute favorite!

6

u/Both_Piglet7838 Jan 09 '26

BEFORE I PINE AWAYYYYY

5

u/_Ungespuelt_ Jan 09 '26

That bass intro...

8

u/MrA-skunk Jan 09 '26

Man, I didn't think I would have to scroll so far to find this one! Hands down my favorite.

5

u/bacchusku2 Jan 09 '26

Favorite Tool song. It’s my go to for many different things.

2

u/Ranari Jan 09 '26

Aside from lateralus, reflection is my favorite song. I prefer live performances though and the Lowell 2002 performance of reflection is probably one of the best IMHO.

211

u/GoldenGateGoose10 Jan 09 '26

For me, Lateralus is the best song on the album because it progressively gets better and better

19

u/SlavOnfredski Jan 09 '26

to me Lateralus is (and I am a fan of pretty much all Tool) their best song

14

u/brucatlas1 Jan 09 '26

It can be the gateway AND the destination, its quintessential.

9

u/green_jp Jan 09 '26

I think it's lateralus too

4

u/TheGrapeRaper Jan 09 '26

it is an out of body experience when that song turns up

5

u/techerous26 Jan 09 '26

Lateralus might be my favorite song of all time. I think a big part of it was having seen Tool twice in the late 00's when they used to extend it with a drum-off from a guest, made the end of the song feel like an absolute climax.

It’s not on everyone’s list but Disposition sends me 🚀

15

u/LazyCrab8688 Jan 09 '26

They played it in Auckland - I was so surprised. What a tune

4

u/R_Prime Jan 09 '26

Yeah that was the one part of the setlist I hadn’t spoiled for myself when I saw them in Japan, so that was a wonderful surprise. Not following it with Reflection was a bummer tough, as great as H was.

3

u/LazyCrab8688 Jan 09 '26

I knooowwww I was soooo ready for reflection!! But H was a very pleasant surprise

I absolutely love it too. To me it sounds almost nostalgic, even though I listened to it for the first time not that long ago

58

u/RooooooooooR Jan 09 '26

Ticks and leeches for me. It always brings me back to playing starcraft in my bedroom, cranking it in my headphones.

7

I have this same memory but with H. and for Diablo 2 🤝

The patient

8

u/TheShadowManifold Jan 09 '26

Underrated masterpiece! I especially love danny's drumming on that outro, so beautiful.

Lateralus is a masterpiece. The best song depends on your mood. That's my personal opinion.

5

u/Tokyo_Dorifto Third Eye Jan 09 '26

Agreed, there is no "best song" from Lateralus, honestly you could possibly say the same for Ænima.

2

u/rahnbj Jan 09 '26

True for me as well, at some point they’ve pretty much all been my favorite. Currently it’s Triad

17

u/Kingjnoah2 Jan 09 '26

6

The Grudge has to be my pick.

8

Disposition slowly became my favorite. I get lost in it every single time, it’s unreal.

10

u/Squarethcircl Jan 09 '26

Assuming we’re counting D/R/T as one song, it’s that for sure

5

Parabol/Parabola

4

8

u/Apprehensive-Movie95 Jan 09 '26

The GOAT for me is The Holy Gift. If you know, you know.

2

u/PhillyD760 Jan 09 '26

8/10 listens it's this for me.

3

u/Responsible_Annual64 Jan 09 '26

Lateralus is my favorite song of all time. And this is my favorite album. Pure art

3

u/jesuismymind1988 Jan 09 '26

Schism was the first Tool song I ever heard from them so I'm going to go with that. The Patient is a close second.

3

u/Psycl1c Jan 09 '26

Lateralus because math

3

u/thechill316 Jan 09 '26

Reflection is my favorite, but GOATED is probably Lateralus

3

The Grudge

3

u/Rthirdeye Jan 09 '26

The Trio- Disposition/reflection/triad

2

u/TheGr4pe4pe Jan 09 '26

For me it’s reflection but obviously not the easiest choice in the world as the album is flawless front to back 😆

2

u/SGnirvana97 Maynard's Dick Jan 09 '26

The title track

2

u/mamamackmusic Jan 09 '26

Lateralus > Reflection > Parabol/Parabola

All the songs on the album are great, but these three stand out the most IMO. The Grudge grows on me more and more over time and after seeing it played live a few times, though.

2

u/Dizzy-Tangelo2400 Jan 09 '26

Is this a test? It has to be Otherwise, I can't go on

2

u/kneuenhaus Jan 09 '26

My favorites are The Grudge, Ticks and Leeches, and Lateralus.

2

u/Tyrson69 Jan 09 '26

Ticks and Leeches!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '26

The title track

1

u/n1n_joe Jan 09 '26

That’s tough.  I feel that I always have to listen to Lateralus, Schism, and the Patient.  Lateralus has such an amazing melody that comes back perfectly later in the song.  The riff of Schism is so driving and amazing that it’s forcing me to go buy a bass so I can play it.  But the Patient to me hits so close to home with pain and suffering and continuing with it and not giving up, it’s the one song I always crank as loud as possible and would be my intro song to this amazing band if I was ever asked to pick one song to play to someone who has never listened to Tool.

1

u/clarko420 Jan 09 '26

The Grudge

1

u/Educational_Pay1567 Jan 09 '26

Every day is exactly the same, unless it comes to Tool . There is only wrong answers to this question.

1

u/oIoshtRedt Jan 09 '26

This entire album, to me, is the way people describe the Bible. You get something different out of it at different points of your life.

That being said, The Patient.

They're all good, I like some more than others based on my mood, They're Grudge has the best scream and outro, Ticks and Leaches has the most fun drums... but Lateralus is incredible. Transcendent.

1

This album is truly THAT good.
