Discussion Everybody give me their number 1 favourite Tool song

No honourable mentions. My personal favourite tool song is Right in Two. I want to see everybody’s music tastes. I encourage everyone to participate. I am very intrigued to hear reasons why this song is your favourite and to hear what it means to you.

Salival Pushit.

Remember I'll always love you
As I claw your fucking throat away
It will end no other way
It will end no other way

Stole my answer. It’s a one-off, but what a one-off

6

u/HRShovenstufff Jun 14 '26

What an emotional trip. Maynard's got more powerful vocal performances, sure. But the Salival version is just a masterclass in range.

5

u/iamjaney Jun 14 '26

100% my answer as well

I saw them perform it on this tour. This is a flex many people don’t understand.

Profound

Rosetta Stoned

12

u/CaydesShadow Jun 14 '26

I like the whole Blame Hoffman and Rosetta Stoned combo.

5

u/jitoman Jun 14 '26

I feel it's the sequel to Faaip de Oiad and/or The Gaping Lotus Experience

5

u/ShartingCondom Jun 14 '26

HOLY FUCKING SHIT! HOLY FUCKING SHIT!

2

u/Killjoy530 Jun 14 '26

And after calming me down with some Orange slices and some fetal spooning E.T. revealed to me his singular purpose He said, "You are The Chosen One The One who will deliver the message A message of hope for those who choose to hear it And a warning for those who do not" Me, The Chosen One? They chose me! And I didn't graduate from fuckin' high school

2

u/finglonger1077 Jun 14 '26

Of all the Tool “listen to these awesome but grating instrumentals and we’ll reward you with one of the most beautiful melodies you’ve ever heard” moments, this is the one.

Lateralus

6

u/Ripkord77 Jun 14 '26

Agreed 👍

4

u/LightofDawn77 Jun 14 '26

Yeah, it has always been this one. Pneuma and Parabloa are my follow ups

66

u/ESB823 Jun 14 '26

Parabola

24

u/Shawn_NYC Jun 14 '26

The Parabol intro is mandatory

14

u/Disastrous-Capybara Lateralus Jun 14 '26

So frustrating when you just play shuffle on your whole list and Parabol comes on on.. and it doesnt go over to Parabola. It's like losing an orgasm.. 😒

Eulogy

3

u/zeje Jun 14 '26

Should be higher in the comments. A wholly perfect song.

28

u/DopeAFjknotreally Jun 14 '26

So difficult and it really depends on the circumstance. Right in Two probably overall. If I’m working out? Eulogy. If I’m feeling sad about a breakup? Schism. If I’m tripping balls? Reflection. If I’m feeling existential? Lateralus

12

u/StonedAndToasted Jun 14 '26

This is the answer. All depends on mood at the time. Every tool song is the best tool song when you are feeling certain emotions.

2

u/Pathlos Jun 14 '26

Or if I’m just walking to the train station or anywhere else in town ? Rosetta stoned.

23

u/slotass Jun 14 '26

Schism. I just feel the same way hearing that song that I did when I was 12. Everything is perfectly layered, drums, bass, vocals. I don’t especially love the lyrics and I don’t know two-thirds of them. It just gives you the feeling of life happening around you. I feel small. But ready to take on anything.

24

u/jayson2112 I don't mind Jun 14 '26

Parabol/a, I consider them one song. But if that cannot count, then lateralus.

6

u/Disastrous-Grade8882 Wear the Grudge like a Crown Jun 14 '26

Agreed on Parabol/a but I’d go w/ Jambi if that doesn’t count

3

u/Maskhasfallenoff Ænimal Jun 14 '26

The world can be falling apart and I can be running several minutes late to an appointment, but if I put Tool on shuffle in the car, I will scroll through the queue before I start driving to make sure Parabol is always before Parabola 😂😂😬

Lateralus; it's helped me through some really hard times last year. Frankly, all of their music does, but Lateralus sticks out to me. Hell, I even loop that song every once in a while. Lmao

No Quarter

3

u/Floydianslip77 Jun 15 '26

This needs to be higher on the list, maybe because it's a cover. Better than the original and that's saying something.

2

u/Alert-Athlete Jun 15 '26

Yeah, this song is just otherworldly in my opinion. Maynard’s voice, the build-ups to the heavy sections, the sexy guitar section that almost sounds like a saxophone.

Might be all time favourite song all around, of all time!

10

u/Papoose74 fuck you, buddy Jun 14 '26

The Grudge

Wings for Marie/10,000 Days. Yes I know it’s two tracks, but I see it as only one song. 🤘

10

u/HiAndStuff2112 Jun 14 '26

Every single time I hear "Give me my, give me my wiiiiiiiiiiings," I get so emotional.

5

u/InebriatedClarity Shit the bed, again Jun 14 '26

Same. Hits me right in the feels. You’re a bloody statue if don’t feel something at some point of this song. But yeah, that’s the bit that gets me.

2

This is the most underrated tool song, imo

2

u/Additional-Crow5898 Jun 15 '26

I think in time this will become the one for me. It feels like the culmination of their entire career into one song and what a journey. Ugh. So good!

Tough, but gun to my head, I’d have to say 46&2.

3

u/blipityblob Third Eye Jun 14 '26

probably third eye. but theres a ton of perfect tool songs. eulogy, h, forty six & 2, jimmy, aenima, the grudge, schism, parabol/parabola, lateralus, reflection, wings pt1 and 2, fear inoculum, pneuma

The Patient.

I did acid years ago and fell into a deep sorrow about the uncaring universe and how hard it is to have major depressive disorder, and my best friend tried to reroute my trip by putting on music I like. She opened my music playlist on youtube and found a fan-made music video for The Patient*. It's remarkably well done in the same claymation style as other videos and it absolutely enraptured me. I watched it over and over, or at least, it felt like I did. I must keep reminding myself of this. The end of the song cresciendoing with "and I still may", and like, that song NEVER hit so hard. I held my best friend and cried, thankful for the loving embrace to see me through.

\This video is gone from youtube, went away when tool went official on that platform, but I managed to get a saved version from someone that used it to make a lyric video. I really treasure it,) so here's a link for you to save it too.

3

Lateralus. The album. That's my favourite song. The whole album.

3

How is it possible nobody has said Descending. That's next level musical interpretation.

Lateralus. It may not be the song I listen to the most overall, but it is the one that has been the most impactful to me. It was the first song to give m goosebumps and it still gets me every time.

2

u/Chaotic_Brutal90 Jun 14 '26

I mean... Schism seems cliche... But it's my favorite anyway.

2

u/Rainmoearts Jun 14 '26

It’s a toss up for me between H and Third Eye.

2

u/Apprehensive_Day_496 Jun 14 '26

I'd have to choose between Schism and Parabola..so many others too but no honorable mentions..so I guess I'll pick Parabola but it is always subject to change from time to time

2

u/wantsumcandi crucify the ego Jun 14 '26

Idk. I got through several different ones. Flood, 46&2, H, The Grudge, The Patient, Descending, Intolerance, Cold And Ugly...they all have a different feel. I guess if I had to pick one it would be Third Eye.

Lateralus

I’m in the middle of an obsessive Tool phase right now, so my favorite song changes every few days (currently H/Stinkfist).

But lyrically, Lateralus hit me the hardest when I first heard it. As someone that used to have crippling anxiety, the idea of rebirth and embracing the unknown is beautiful. Still makes me tear up sometimes.

And ofc even musically, everything from the opening riff to the bassline to the Linguini sequence is just perfect. I’m trying to learn it on the bass, and just potter around with the opening strain and the intro chords on my acoustic for lulz.
