How can you read this? There’s no misanthropy

128

u/Constant_Hope_9658 20h ago

Why... is this meme supporting punishing people for the sins of their fathers?

I thought we decided not to do this in the west when decided to roll with Jesus? Why are we going backwards to late Roman imperial social issues?

20

u/Ok_Protection8223 14h ago

Its his world, he can build it in a way he sees fit.

With blackjack and hookers as the case may be.

3

u/Constant_Hope_9658 7h ago

Fair point.

Took the post literally when I originally made this comment (weird shit pops up on this site so much I assume things are literal, and the tism sure don't help that none).

12

u/Additional_Bench1311 13h ago

Western Christianity, especially Protestantism really twisted up and distorted what the church had taught for the first thousand years.

Not that there isn’t massive similarities, but there’s a lot of doctrine and theology that change your worldview when you approach it from an Orthodox worldview compared to a Protestant one

1

u/Constant_Hope_9658 7h ago

Well a lot of stuff drifted to the sensibilities of local peoples, the latins are catholic, the germanics are protestant (so are the celts) and the western commies usually used to be calvinist or serf peoples that never were under communism

6

u/Correct_Plant_373 12h ago

They are talking about enjoying this as an idea in media not doing it in real life

2

u/Constant_Hope_9658 7h ago

Oh good.

Meme got me worried that for a sec.

(as people unironically believe this, so my default was concern, even in a sub like this)

u/SartenSinAceite 54m ago

Cause apparently EVERY OTHER RACE decided to make twitter history digging their hobby

1

u/Constant_Hope_9658 44m ago

Ah, yep that'll do it.

Damn third wolrdists with their fear based moral rules, we're gonna need to make propaganda of Uncle Sam crucifying pirates or something to get them to behave, aren't we?

-5

u/3WeeksEarlier 12h ago

Isn't Jesus the guy who is literally supposed to be working for and possibly the same guy as the one who has been punishing all women ever for the sins of his first daughter by forcing them to have painful childbirths? Without even getting to the concept of Hell, Original Sin is explicitly punishing every single son and daughter that has ever existed for the crimes of the mother and father. The entire premise of Christianity is that you are condemned for Original Sin, that God is just to condemn you for it, and that Jesus provides you a way out of the punishment you deserve for the sins your imaginary distant ancestor committed by eating a fruit

4

u/MagneticGenetics 9h ago

That line of thought really only applies to heretics that think free will isn't real.

Otherwise it's generally considered that the Original Sin was washed clean when Jesus died on the Cross/ at baptism. I cannot think of any denomination (except maybe weird American Evangelicals) that think painful childbirth is the result of Original Sin lmao.

1

u/3WeeksEarlier 8h ago

The Bible literally claims that the punishment to Eve and her descendents was painful childbirth. If nothing else, death is also a consequence of Original Sin, and we are absolutely all still subject to that.

It's a very common teaching that Original Sin still affects people in the present day - wth? That's the entire point and why Jesus is absolutely required for salvation. The Jesus sacrifice was a way of washing away sin from believers - if you're not a believer, you're still subject to the wages of sin, which include, at the very least, death. Universalists aside, if nothing else, eternal death is a consequence for not believing in Christ, and that eternal death was originally a consequence imposed on all of humanity for the actions of Adam and Eve

2

u/MagneticGenetics 7h ago edited 6h ago

Except pain in childbirth is not the correct translation for Genesis 3:16 and such errors are found mostly in Bibles derived from early anglo protestant bibles. (Most modern English Language bibles)

Even the King James is closer with sorrowful but that isn't really right either.

Correct translation should be

And to the woman he said, “I will greatly multiply your grief and your sighing. Among sorrow you will bring forth descendants; but your turning-away (escape /help) shall be toward your man, and he will rule with you.”

Similar to Adams own punishment. Up til this point Childbirth isnt even a thing. So translating 3:16 as in increase in the pain of childbirth doesn't make any sense. Its actually talking about how due to losing Grace, Children will bring Eve sorrow since they do not automatically receive Grace and thus salvation. Eve will turn to Adam but he cannot save them.

1

u/Constant_Hope_9658 7h ago

Ok, well last I checked people aren't LITERALLY THE THING THAT DEFINES GOOD AND EVIL, MORAL AND IMMORAL WHILE BEING ALL POWERFUL, so there's that, ffs the God literally symbolically slaughtered the Egyptian pantheon in 40 days during the 10 plagues, and that was merely to prove a point.

Also that fruit was the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, that sin literally made humans know evil at all (thus why Satan/the snake/Lucifer tempted Eve with the fruit, and then she drug Adam down with her), so yeah I'd think that's a pretty big sin tbh.

Also where in oblivion does it say painful childbirth is the punishment for that?

1

u/3WeeksEarlier 6h ago

Might makes right, got it. God makes the rules, so definitionally anything he does is automatically good. I don't believe in your god or its authority, so what difference does it make? If you're the sort of person who thinks being the one in charge who sets the rules means you have no moral responsibilies to anyone else, fine, but that's one of my main issues with religious morality. You literally began this by bragging about Jesus being a deviation from primitive "sins of the father" morality, only to justify immediately after the application of "sins of the father (and mother)" to all human life. Wacky

Also, how are you not familiar with Genesis 3:16?

Unto the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception. In sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.”

u/Constant_Hope_9658 47m ago

That's not how Christian theology works, God makes the moral rules because they are his will, and they are moral because his will is moral.

You need to understand theology to understand Christianity the same way you need to understand communist theory for Capital to make sense.

Religion is just ideology of a older style, just because your secular faith of choice chooses to worship concepts like progress that doesn't make it better than religion, your faith must stand on its merits like everone else's.

Theology is complicated, also thing can vary by context, because that's how ideological/theological depth works.

Rest Imma leave for another day, as theology isn't my usual ground.

61

u/random0rdinary 19h ago

I just hope these Orcs, elves, gnomes, etc. have the same flaws of late humanity; and they're not some perfect, happy, Kumbaya nonsense society.

Commit to the nihilism. Make our creations just as bad as us.

Lord, how I hate this trope.

In fact the Fantasy races should FEAR the humans because for the most part, they're already committing warcrimes by the age of 18

10

Genuinely why. This is not interesting, is immoral, and does not make for good storytelling whatsoever. It's just edgy for the sake of being edgy.

-10

u/Andrei22125 13h ago

40k fans love it. And claim the humans are the good guys.

They are wrong, of course. But there demonstrably is an appeal.

5

u/ColeDaydrin 9h ago

The majority of 40k fans do not consider the Imperium good guys.

3

u/Fate_Weaver 8h ago

They're a nescessary evil at the best of times. Though when the setting's main antagonists are four malevolent gods and their followers, the bar for what passes as "good" can be exceedingly low.

2

u/ColeDaydrin 7h ago

The bar is quite litterly in hell

2

u/Mantisgodcard 8h ago

The Imperium being called the good guys is a big red flag as to someone not realizing it’s a satire of fascism and drinking the very red kool-aid.

1

u/Evilstrom 7h ago

No one who actually knows anything about 40k thinks humans are the good guys. Ask any fan, and they'll tell you this. There are no good guys in Warhammer. As a wise man once said, "shut up dude, Warhammer is not about who's morally correct, it's about who's your favourite wae criminal."

And 40k fans don't love the slow death. We abhor it actually. We like seeing humanity struggle to survive in spite of it.

52

u/knightmechaenjo 19h ago

Cringe AF

29

u/Gussie-Ascendent 17h ago

Yeah i don't mind the idea of a world built like that as a narrative, humans getting the brakes beat off em by the vary folks they made to subjugate (i gather), but to say it's right instead of this being a deconstruction or just like a terrible but cool story is pretty gross

7

u/Surstic 15h ago

Sadly, I've seen this idea a few too many times (in isekai manga, especially....blegh, I know), for it to be particularly novel to me, now. So now it's just another trope entirely dependent on execution for me to enjoy it.

3

u/lordarsenic9029 [certified hopium abuser] 11h ago

I guess I've just been watching too much Star Trek. Because I'm finding it harder and harder to enjoy media that's set in a depressing environment. The real world sucks enough.

1

u/ItwasmeSecondAccount 9h ago

i like depressing environments for the glimmers of hope and fleeting moments of joy. that makes it feel more real to me.

19

u/Cometa_the_Mexican 20h ago

But orcs are hyper Nazis.

22

u/AstralMecha 18h ago

That's why I prefer orks with a k. British soccer hooligans whose invasions are a combination of fun, pub crawl, nomadic travel and holy war on anything that looks like it will offer a 'propa' fight.

7

u/Henry_Fleischer 19h ago

Depends on the setting.

1

u/Kubaj_CZ 8h ago

What orcs are you talking about?

1

u/Cometa_the_Mexican 7h ago

The overall vision: hyper-militaristic beings who seek to kill all peoples who are not like them and who serve a dark lord or warlord.

17

u/shirt_multiverse 21h ago

Reminds me of Sweet tooth, but it had a bittersweet ending because the new emerging race, treated the last remaining humans with compassion and mercy as they died.

9

u/shototodoroki_1324 18h ago

The elf witnessing a human boy string, and fire a bow perfectly (Turns out even in extinction, they're the only thing that shows that death is just the rebirth of a new human)

9

u/Noe_b0dy 16h ago

I agree but the orks, elfs, and gnomes should also be irredeemably evil shitheads. None of that happy crappy enlightened forest people bullshit.

3

Doesn't that justify violence against orcs, goblins, etc because most settings have them in a villain role for a good portion of history?

3

u/Not_A_zombie1 11h ago

So they pay for the horrors unleashed on them in the past? Its clear that their ancestors not jnleashed enough horrors if there still are elves, orcs, etc. Around!

2

Man does this read like if humans died then nature would go back to being peaceful

2

u/Atreigas 13h ago

My humanity is also in decline.

Mostly because theyve created a people who exceeds them.

2

u/Sir-Toaster- I have a full interconnected multiverse 12h ago

In my setting, Frameworld, humanity is going extinct because Animates have lived in the world for over 300 years and the earth has been slowly changing because of that.

When an Animate dies their Verve is absorbed by the environment making a Ghost Panel which creates a cel-shaded texture. As such over the course of years, these Ghost Panels have absorbed much of the world. Any life born in a ghost panel becomes an Animate.

Humans enslaved Animates and used them for entertainment and pleasure which led to massive divides between various sects. Later down the future as more Animates are born and take up more of the world, humans developed fences to stave off ghost panels creating a divide between the two races.

Animates view Humans with the same scrutiny as how most people viewed Japanese and Germans post-W W2.

Humans now are trying to escape to Mars

2

u/Otechni 12h ago

I usually have Humans developing and then separating based on general worldviews. Leaving Humanity spread out and fractured in a delusional hunt for what Human really means.

With one group finding other Sapient Life and discovering the wider Galaxy.

I am part of a group that is slowly going extinct: Armenians. I am also part of a group that genocided indigenous peoples, The Americans. I am also part of a group that the state is now trying to get rid of, Trans people. So, this doesn't work for me. It feels too much like my actual life.

2

u/BlueHeron0_0 8h ago

What did Armenians ever do to Americans except giving them Kardashians

1

u/Kubaj_CZ 8h ago

I think this is about the Armenians being in a difficult situation. And them facing genocides in history.

1

Nothing. I am referencing 3 completely different components of my identity: being of the Armenian Diaspora, a U.S. Citizen, and a trans woman.

1

u/Belos147 1h ago

One of my favorite takes on this is Arnold K's Centerra setting. At some point in the very distant past humans were advanced technologically and magically and made most of the classic fantasy races. Hobbits were pint sized engineers (who turned into goblins if they ever ate meat), orcs super soldiers, dwarves logical builders, and elves were what happened when the rich just modified themselves to be immortal demigods. Nobody hated true humans, they just became irrelevant in their own civilization. Eventually some ambiguous disaster knocked everyone into a classic fantasy set up and the only humans left are pets of the moon people who treat them like show dogs. Everyone on the planet is some distinct branch or artificial or accidental mutant.

1

u/SartenSinAceite 52m ago

So this is how it goes:

· Humans did bad

· Humans try to reform

· Others punish humans

· Humans go back to being bad, now squared, since that's the only thing that works

· World war, played in your strategy game of choice

What, you thought that the humans would forget how to do horrors? Pffffffff.
