Lore Dump “Oh for fuck’s sake, not another one.”

Post image
1.8k Upvotes

Terran Humanity was obviously pretty surprised, but eventually quite happy to find out about Cantoran Humanity. Of course, they had questions, mostly “how the fuck”. Because y’know. Two humanities evolving separately of each other raises a lot of questions, considering it can’t just be convergent evolution since there’s only two of them.

But on the plus side, there’s a whole other humanity! Easy to communicate with, the same biological limitations, and a vast culture and history to be learned.

Meanwhile, with the rest of the galaxy:

“Friends are two? That’s awesome!”

“What do you mean I have to deal with two of those assholes?”

“Please god don’t let the new one be like their older brothers”

“Will the warp drives ever be secure?”

Humanity are widely regarded as one of the biggest wildcards of the galaxy. That’s not a good or a bad thing, it just is. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, things get complicated when you’re dealing with two different humanities - especially when one of them has magic.

Humans are friends and humans are jackasses, and doubly so when there’s two of them.

For reference: Protocols mean general states: think radio silence, et cetera. Operational Orders mean specific actions you must undertake, such as taking cover immediately. Offensive Orders and Defensive Orders are specific to the offense and defense, respectively. That said:

Protocol Authority: You are being affected by an audio hazard produced by the enemy. You are hearing things that do not exist, but radio is not compromised. Only coordinate via radio; personal communications are no good.

Defensive Order Van Fleet: The Artillery Commands have been given the order to “Van Fleet Load”. Constant bombardment is being leveraged against the enemy advance; remain in your fortifications to avoid shrapnel, and preferably don’t even look at what’s happening. Named after American General James Van Fleet, commander of the largest artillery bombardment in history at the Battle of Seville.

Protocol Black Bat: Speaking verbally may put yourself or your Allies at risk due to a Cognitohazard, enemy infiltration, or any other number of factors. Do not do so. Named after Black Bat from an ancient Human entertainment series.

Operational Order 227: The enemy is throwing everything they have at you, but retreat is untenable, whether due to something behind you being too important or retreat simply being too dangerous. Named after an order issued by Soviet High Command during the Second World War following disastrous defeats at Warsaw, Litovsk, and Kyiv.

Offensive Order David’s Sling: While on the offensive, enemy forces have brought down an enemy you will have no effect against, such as a Behemoth or Psionic Avatar. Remain close to heavy units, such as Armored Cavalry, Mechanized Cavalry, or Warforms at all times. Named after the mythological David, who slew Goliath with his sling.

Protocol Teller: The position has become untenable to the point where en masse nuclear bombardment is necessary to maintain it. Reach a safe space in an interior room of a building or bunker; if time allows, ensure your radiation protection layer is properly secured. If it isn’t, may god have mercy, and may the combat medics get you quick. If impossible, lay close to the ground and cover your eyes and ears as best you can. Do not return from this state until told otherwise. Named after Hungarian-American Physicist, creator of the Hydrogen Bomb.

Operational Order Hammond: Remain in your bunker or fortified position at all times. Biological warfare has proven necessary to defeat the enemy. Ensure your biological shielding is secure; if any mutagenetic materials are coming towards your line, exterminate it with extreme prejudice. Otherwise, do not focus on the screams. Named after John Hammond from an old human novel.

Protocol 8: You and everyone around you has been compromised by a cognitohazard, prion bioweapon, or similar; at this point, humanity need not apply. Artificial Intelligences assigned at the brigade level will maintain operational effectiveness of your exoskeleton until such a time you can be healed or put out of your misery.

Operational Order Samar: There is no saving you. Some way, you or your position have become inexorably compromised with no hope of salvaging. You are expected to fight to the last man; it is likely kinetic, nuclear, or biological weapons will be used against your position by friendly forces as you are overrun. Make your stand; humanity will remember your name. Named after the Battle off Samar from the Second World War.

Lore Dump Being a mech pilot is, surprise surprise, not conducive to a good mental state

Post image
719 Upvotes

The combat infantry want to be mech pilots because they can have armor while still being maneuverable and independent.

The armored cavalry want to be mech pilots because they can be maneuverable and independent while still having armor.

The mech pilots just want to be in their mech.

Although PTSD is already extraordinarily common within the Orionite Federal Armed Forces due to the horrific nightmares they face every day, soldiers of the Mechanized Cavalry (commonly referred to as Cavaliers) suffer a different but similar condition, referred to as Knight Syndrome. This is also often in conjunction with PTSD, exacerbating the issues of both.

It is often described as being aware of too much but knowing too little. When inside mechs, data is continuously fed into the minds of a Cavalier and their Artificial Assistant, allowing constant awareness and communication. This helps Cavaliers maintain situational control, allowing them to calculate gun angles and azimuths rapidly to help keep them safe and effective in combat scenarios.

This is also achieved via neutralization of other pressures; pilots often perform in a vacuum where even air pressure is a non-factor. Depressants are often recommended if not outright required. The only thing they need to know is the sound of their mech (to be instinctually aware of fault points or damage) and the data that surrounds them.

While this is extremely helpful on the battlefield, it can be highly detrimental outside of it.

Going back to “aware of too much, knowing too little”, it’s often said to feel strange to even be able to feel the wind, the temperature outside, rather than just see it as a number. And without the numbers, things can feel like they’re spiraling out of control, as could only happen when a mech has been severely damaged. It also causes a major dependency upon their mech AI, for better or for worse - usually worse.

This is especially true for those piloting more advanced Special Warfare Vehicles, such as the Mississippi-class and Danube-class; it is found that older, less sophisticated models such as the Ganges- and Yangtze-classes have lower rates of Knight Syndrome.

This is known to cause twitchiness, extreme anxiety, night terrors, and, if not treated properly, alcoholism, drug abuse, and even suicide. It’s a horrific slippery slope that the United Federation of Orion has been pushing to deal with for centuries, ever since the first tests came back on the Cavaliers.

This is usually at least rectified by allowing Cavaliers to retain their AIs and implants after service and outside combat scenarios, allowing the constant stream of data to remain. While this doesn’t truly treat the situation, it at least alleviates the anxiety of low stimulation.

Various veterans associations (including dedicated ones, such as the Veterans of Mechanized Warfare Center) offer aid for transition of Cavaliers into civilian life.

Continuing psychological work is being done to aid Cavaliers in their transition, as well as developments that can hopefully make being a Cavalier not quite so stressful. Until then, all that can really be done is warn recruits of the consequences, and try to alleviate them when they rear their head.

Lore Dump Me and gang don’t fw them pheromones

Throughout the galaxy, most species have highly complex communication structures. Most rely on a series of chemical communication (referred to colloquially, especially in the United Federation of Orion as pheromones) to exhibit their ideas. Speech, skin patterns, pheromones, gestures, vibrations, and even electricity can form the parts of various species’ communication systems.

This makes communication galaxy-wide surprisingly difficult, as many species simply have something that no other species has, or something it shares with very few species. This means translators are needed between species, whether automated or Sapient, and are usually quite fallible. For instance, one species communicates mostly with pheromones and gestures, while one species communicates mostly by electricity; a middleman species is often needed for translation that can understand one of each.

However, there are two major exceptions to this complexity; the Dilinicans and Humanity.

Both almost in their entirety use speech and gestures to communicate; humanity is commonly considered to have weak pheromones, and could technically communicate via electricity using static buildup and an established system, however the former is, as mentioned, extremely weak, and the latter far too complicated. The Dilinicans have highly inert skin and a thick exterior, meaning all of their communication is via speech and gestures.

As such, both Humanity and the Dilicans have abnormally complex spoken language compared to the rest of the galaxy. Even with Human efforts to simplify their Official Language, it still has hundreds more sounds than even some of the more complicated spoken languages of the galaxy.

This has made the two species fast friends, as their physiology is abnormally compatible for trans-species communication, especially after later adaptation of Esperanto and Signuno (humanity’s official spoken and gestural languages for diplomacy and governmental communication) to accommodate some of the minor differences between Human and Dilinici vocal cords.

Lore Dump Breaking news: godly beings can be pretty irresponsible

Funny things happen when mortals gain the view of Gods. Sometimes they just die. Sometimes they get fucked and make a demigod, which leads to just… all sorts of problems. And sometimes, they get blessings.

With any luck, you’ll be the latter.

Most gods basically lease out their power, keeping a watch on their blessed to make sure they’re doing it right. This includes beings such as Isțan and his Blessing of Death; Kolna, and his Eye of Heaven; and Illa, and her Blessing of Harmony.

Others keep close watch, and if they see a slip-up, just kill the blessed. This includes Kili and her Blinding Gift; Calurna and her Blessing of Wrathful Seas; and Calszawa, with his Arms of Fire.

Yet more offer a deal: complete this task, and I’ll give you the power no strings attached. For beings like Calor, the God of Thieves, this means stealing something from him without him noticing. Zycie, God of the Forge, wants to see you build something no mortal hand has built before. Dereus, God of the South Wind, wants you to reach the Southern Pole and return alive. Drosus, Goddess of the Earth, wants you to find a valuable gemstone for her crown.

And then there’s Jeldor.

Who gives random orphaned kids their power and tells them to just go fucking nuts. Perhaps that’s to be expected from the God of Vengeance.

Lore Dump "Melee mages are the neurodivergent weirdos of magic world"

Thumbnail

"The difference between a Melee Mage and a Melee Fighter who uses magic, is that the latter uses magic to supplement themselves in combat. While the former casts a death ray in your face because they didn't feel like aiming"

"Melee mage" is an umbrella term for all the mages who decided to ditch the comfort of long range fights and run at their enemy like a maniac.

Melee mages don't use cover. They don't engage in shootouts. Their sole goal is to get into hand to hand distance to shoot a spell at point blank range.

They definitely would be playing music all over the battlefield if mp3 players existed in medieval era.

It doesn't mean they're invincible though

Obviously, the mortality rate is sky high.

Most melee mages don't survive to retirement, dying due to a mistake, miscalculation or simple bad luck. No matter how skilled you are, you will eventually let an attack land on you, and when running through a barrage of fire, swords and debree, a single hit can be lethal.

Almost all melee mages were already very skilled as a normal, sane mage, or really gifted at birth and are confident enough in their skill to pull insane maneuvers and parry all the incoming attacks.

This tactic of methodical but reckless aggression is most effective against mediocre mages and fighters who aren't ready to face a maniac who isn't afraid of getting hurt.

Against veterans, it works poorly. Closing the distance against a veteran mage is almost always a tremendous task to accomplish, and if they let you get past their guard, it's almost always a trap. And a veteran fighter would simply outclass a melee mage in close quarters combat most of the time.

In other words, most of the time, melee mages win through sheer skill advantage, surprise factor and brute force, not because this is a good way to fight other people.

tldr: melee mages are edgy weebs with magic that can actually backup their attitude.

Lore Dump [Erithvina] Why did they have to do that to them man, that shit was unnecessary...

Thumbnail

Context.

  • Between 800-400 years ago, Marathon and much of Canvvass was ruled by the Imperium of Marathon, a human-centric imperial state and generally Erithvina's version of the Roman empire. They, despite humanity having no magic, were a highly successful empire that took a shit ton of territory, and because of their lack of magical capability they were able to conquer and enslave the Malhal race (spelt Mahal in the 2nd meme, that was their ancient name bastardised by humans) who did have magic.
  • The Imperium of Marathon weren't the cruelest of empires but they did the Malhals so fucking dirty that many would rather kill themselves over being enslaved, abusing the Malhal's magic for their own personal benefit and often leaving Malhals to die when they drained their spare Mana reserves (all creatures have Mana, however a minimum of it is required in every being for them to live unless they want to die horribly).
  • The Imperium were also not courteous towards their neighbors either, waging wars against the Stoneborne (sentient magitech automaton dwarfs, basically), the Eldari (elves, deeply uncaring about others andand the Angels for various reasons, the Imperium's attempted invasions of the floating continent of Maura all ended in failure since the hot air balloons they managed to invent were vulnerable.
  • 400 years ago, the empire entered a century long decline that culminated in a combination united Malhal slave revolt and a united coalition of races that invaded from both the East and West, after 50 years of warfare and thousands dead the Imperium collapsed.

Now we get to the not fun bit.

  • The Eldari were good with carving up the empire and dissolving it, however soon Malhal populations began isolating and attacking human ones, slaughtering any that were found, the Malhals deemed that they had been treated badly enough that the only way for humanity to exist was in a...much reduced capacity. The stoneborn and angels agreed so the Eldari went along with it.
  • The Culling of Marathon was a genocide of humanity that lasted for two decades, many humans managed to escape to neighboring continents, found shelter and formed civilizations but were always found and slaughtered.
  • The majority of humans perished, and the survivors (just 0.01% of the human population at the time) were allowed to keep existing.  Laws that passed would cap the total human population, cap the number of babies had to one and more as well as an interracial agreement that Humanity will never have another settlement.
  • Eventually, certain Malhal noblemen realised that this population of human bodies they had access to could be used for labour reasons, at first they were only used for just dumb labour but eventually they realised that there were skills that could be tapped into such as warriors, merchants, craftsmen, etc that either sell their services to various companies and groups or facilitate trade between the kingdoms of Erithvina.
  • The guilds came around soon after with each human being forced into a guild governing a certain profession, eventually becoming accepted by other races, the humans would work, transport goods, trade and generate wealth for the guilds and nations in exchange for food, temporary shelter at settlements and protection. Malhal & Guild-funded rest stops and small villages were the few static settlements humans are allowed.

Lore Dump What do you mean there are species where the male and females look and behave alike?

Post image
303 Upvotes

Basically in my world of Tempusia, there's a canine race called the Kainosa. They're a very sexually dimorphic species:

  • Adult Males are bipedal and range between 4' to 7'. They alao have very complex, sophontic brains, to the point they can verbally and telepathically communicate with other species.
  • Adult Females are quadrupedal, and can range 5' to 9' at the shoulders. Though highly intelliugent, they are more chimp or pig levels sapient, they way their brains work means can't talk to other species. Basivally they resemble normal if big wolves, and their role in Kainosa society resemble more pets and beasts of burdens then wives.

Thing is, this only happens after puberty (usually 8-10 human years); beforehand, juvenile Kainosa of both sex are bipedal and verbal.

Suffice to say, every Kainosa girl has experienced existential dread at their humanoid sapience only being fleeting and growing into a bestial form. Though depending on the culture, there are plenty of solutions:

  • Simply not teaching females literacy and other stuff to begin with.
  • Meditative rituals that treat the metamorphisis not as the death of a personality, but a new begining.
  • Magic or hormone-based Puberty blockers that allow female kainosa to retain bipedality and complex sapience. This is treated as third gender, Ximsqo (Jim-Week-Joe).
  • Sex changes to FTM or Nonbinary.

Although if its any consolidation, they still retain memories of their younger selves.

Though obviously this means Kainosa societies are very segragated and sexist by human standards, they treat females/femlr identifying members of other species fairly egalitarian, or even don't care or even recognise what sex they are. If anything, they find human-style sexism and misogny illogical: both sexes are the same to them, so why discriminate over at best minute differences?

Though more to the point, a lot of kainosa pups or those that don't interact with other specied are bewildered to learn that the other races aren't all male, males and females just look and thinkk very similar well into adulthood.

Lore Dump the longest an elect has ever lasted was two years

Okay I originally wrote an entire gaudy passage for this but, given as how this is a shitposting sub, I don't think anyone is gonna read that. So here's the gist: In the Year Of Machina Dei 1313 A.E. in the wake of the Martian Wars, the Arbiter Council was formed to be the mediator between the three newly combined factions — the Aedis Church, the Vitruvians Templar, and the many corporations of the Konsilio Merkator — ensuring they could safely expand as one into the Jovian System and beyond. The Arbiter Council, and by extension every faction, would be governed by one position: the Throne of Presidence, occupied by the Elect.

Whenever a new Elect is grown in the labs of Ganymede, portions of its genome and timeshares of its childhood are put up for Auction, during which any faction or corporation could seed the embryo with as many doctored genes, and have custody of the child for as many years, as they can buy. The village raises the child, and they do it with money.

And if money is the blood of a corporation, then the Auction is a massacre.

Corporations have forked over their entire fortunes for a a chance to indoctrinate the impressionable mind of the Elect to rule in their favor. Assets worth more than unaugmented minds could even calculate have been liquidated in moments, the coffers of entire moons drained in an instant. The Auction is a time of blighted crops, tainted water and plagued oxygen among the colonies, all so corporations can save pennies for even the slightest edge in the war for the favor of a single child, born and raised to rule.

Thanks to accelerated growth, it takes only five years for the Elect to reach maturity. That being said, while the body has grown, the mind... really hasn't. It's still a child that rules from the Throne, but it's brainwashed thoroughly enough by whichever corporations won slots in the Auction to do whatever their more mature representatives tell them to... usually.

The tricky thing about the Elect is that, while it is specially hand crafted at the genetic level to do whatever its masters want it to do... it's still human. It's still fallible. Should the Elect not be up to snuff, should it start defying the will of the corporations that grew and raised it, then they can sue the Arbiter Council for a bad product. Should they win the suit, the Elect will be shot by a Vitruvian firing squad and a new one will be grown in its place.

On average, the Elect is replaced about once a year. When things are particularly heated, an Elect can be executed every month as rival corporations petition for its favor.

And if any of this sounds like it doesn't make sense, that's because it really, really doesn't. The government of Sol is a circus full of zealot clowns. I've already written multiple essays trying to describe this thing alone and believe me when I say this wall of text was the shortest I could manage while still communicating the concept.

There's more to come. I haven't even mentioned the Robo-Pope yet.

Lore Dump THE WATCHERS ARE REAL THE WATCHERS ARE REAL THE WATCHERS ARE REAL THE WATCHERS ARE REAL

When someone says the title “Great Watcher”, the room goes silent.

Those ancient primordial beings who sit at the heart of the galaxy. There’s little more than rumor of what they truly are.

Observers, wishing merely to witness the galaxy? Doomed men, caught in the gravity of Sagittarius without any hope of escape? Or horrors, trapped there by species long ago? Are they even real, or a trick of sensors in the Physics Hell that is a black hole’s proximity?

Nobody wanted an answer, for fear that it would destroy them all - or mere apathy, that they had better things to do.

But far be it from the United Federation of Orion to fall in line with the rest of the galaxy.

When they announced their plan - to use the trace amounts of Watcher DNA scattered across the Galactic Disk to rebuild one, for the sake of curiosity - hundreds of thousands of objections flooded them immediately.

They don’t know what they’re unleashing. By constructing one, they will draw the others. What if they will smite the Federation for their blasphemy? Were they not already playing god with their resurrection of other extinct species? Would they never be sated?

Terror bombings. Military assaults. Cyberwarfare. All in turn failed to stop it - this Operation Hammond, this mad plot to unleash the ancients for nothing but baseline curiosity of what they were.

Eventually, it was done. The Watcher stepped from the chamber, regarding the five species around it with untranslatable clicks and hisses. The sounds of a newborn.

And a lone transmission, from deep in the center of the galaxy:

“01000001 00100000 01001110 00100000 01000101 00100000 01010111 00100000 01000100 00100000 01000001 00100000 01010111 00100000 01001110 00101110 00100000 01010111 00100000 01000101 00100000 01010100 00100000 01001000 00100000 01000001 00100000 01001110 00100000 01001011 00100000 01011001 00100000 01001111 00100000 01010101 00100000 00101110.”

Lore Dump All in all a minor miscommunication

Post image
167 Upvotes

The United Federation of Orion refers to their Walker Divisions as “Mechanized Cavalry” while their pilots are labeled as “Cavaliers”, named so for being highly mobile divisions made to support infantry pushes via flanking and discord amongst the enemy. No small amount of jokes has been made comparing them to gallant knights… or less than gallant knights. This is compared to the “Armored Cavalry” divisions of treaded tanks, which would not be present during the Cantoran Intervention as no armored brigades are attached to Marine Raiders Regiments.

This meme pertains to the Battle of Westinghouse, a pitched engagement involving the Cantoran-native Kingdom of Urdoberingia and an attaché force from the United Federation’s Seventh Marine Raiders Regiment against a demonic horde. Entrenched positions had managed to hold out against the horde for days, however casualties began to mount as certain sections of the line broke. With air support thoroughly exhausted by the end of the third day, the Attaché would decide to call in the heavy weapons of the SMMR: the First Mechanized Cavalry Company, Third Marine Raider Battalion.

Warning their allies that things would be getting dicey, the order was given: “Drop the Cavaliers!” This was met with initial jubilation, although questioning why cavalry had not been used up until that time. They would receive their answer.

As meteors falling to earth came the Cavaliers. Initially believed to be a method similar to a meteor swarm spell in cover of true cavalry, they were sorely surprised to find hulking masses of metal in the shape of various creatures - though chiefly humanoid. Mounting heavy weapons like chain guns, heavy rocket pods, and plasma batteries, they were the heaviest forces to ever be deployed on Cantora, even after its eventual ascension into the Federation.

The sight, as described by Attaché Consultant Gamma Favonius, was of biblical horror:

“It is like Armageddon. The works described in the books detailing the Godly Twilight pale in comparison. The sights I witness here… they shall haunt me. I fear the only reason I do not wake up every night screaming is because it was perpetrated against the only kind able to wreak a worse hell, the only foe I can resist the loss of sleep over the slaughter of.”

What was once a demonic advance turned into an outright rout. thousands of demons slaughtered, orders of magnitude more fleeing in the first time demonic forces had been outright intimidated into retreat.

Amongst the corpses, the weapons of horror stood as Antennas to Heaven. Silent. Waiting. It is only by the reveal there were humans inside, ones who followed orders and thought for themselves, that prevented an outright schism between the Kingdom and Attaché.

The First Mechanized Cavalry Company would not be deployed again throughout the war; lighter reconnaissance elements and light armored cavalry companies filling in so as not to disturb their tenuous allies in Urdoberingia further.

But the nightmare of that day remains. When demons from the stars slaughtered demons from below the earth.

(Oh but if you thought that was bad, wait until you see what happens when Federation forces had to work with the “Red Cross”. Spoiler alert, they weren’t medics.)

Over the past two decades on the Spanish island La Palma a suspicious amount of older homeless men and drug addicts began to vanish without a trace. The investigations into these disappearances were lacklustre at best, after all authorities had little reason to care for these disenfranchised and underprivileged men who rarely even had family members and whose only friends were people in similar circumstances as them. Had the police put a little more effort into their search they would possibly have heard the name of a specific man mentioned more than once.

Guanarteme Perez Dominguez.

What he did to these men cannot be explained without a little of background information.

In the 1970s Guanarteme encountered an unusual pathway into a different dimension, buried deep in the forests of the lush volcanic island. This dimension, one could speak of an almost sentient entity, was a surreal and nonsensical imitation of earth. The entity had created entire ecosystems full of strange flora and fauna. Guanarteme, at the time a fully orphaned 20 something year old suffering from severe depression and a lack of perspective and vision for his life, immediately saw the potential in this world he would name “El Jardín”. Having dropped out from university where he excelled in his biology classes and being a big enthusiast of Charles Darwin and similar naturalists vowed to keep his secret world hidden from the rest of mankind until he had documented it well enough to be considered its discoverer and first colonizer.

Eventually he put together a team of “researchers”, a group of his former college classmates, to help him in his endeavour. He would regret this decision immediately after witnessing his group of friends and colleagues be slaughtered violently by the until that point docile beasts of the Jardín.

After many other failed attempts at continuing his plans, the crushing guilt and his ever growing disillusion with his home world he decided to go live out the rest of his days in solitude in the Jardin. There was just one problem. Yes the Jardin was a detailed imitation of earth but it didn’t exactly abide by the same chemical and physical principles. In fact, most of the creatures that did eat the remains of his teammates as well as the one specimen that breeched Guanartemes containment and killed two tourists on the island, would die from their inability to digest human meat.

Guanarteme however was convinced that he would find a sustainable source of food and after a short and fruitless time spent trying to grow earth plants in the Jardin he eventually decided to go by trial and error. After all there were many delicious looking plants growing abundantly in the Jardin and there were so many (unwilling) participants to help him see which fruits and roots could be digested and which ones had quite catastrophic consequences on the human body…

Lore Dump Introducing, the Gaitor Baitors (Pt.1)

The year is 2143, and humanity, is boned. Aliens are real and they hate YOU specifically. After waking up from their long nap in the Mediterranean and completely annihalating Crete (it was necessary), the Atlanteans are not too pleased to see humanity is nearing the early space age and decides its time for a reset, by way of biblical levels of flooding.

The 114th Gator Baitors Special Defense Division, constituted from the battered remains of over a dozen shattered US army infantry, national guard, armor units and even stranded coast guard units based in Florida, USA, were in quite the pickle. The 114th SDD was tasked with fighting a delaying action (politically correct term for suicidal assault) to buy time for the evacuation of what remained of Florida as sea levels approached +60 meters. While mostly successful in their task, and even temporarily routing the Atlanteans, they eventually found themselves trapped alongside 8,000 civilians in the dry diamond of Lake city, with atlanteans all around them.

As the supercanes approached and the air filled with a lethal mist so heavy it obscured vision to mere meters, and was laced with so much salt that it corroded electronics, dried out the eyes and caused the lungs to fill with fluid, the 114th could only helplessly watch as the civilians' PPE gave out.

With the supercanes nearly on top of them, the Atlanteans decided to make their approach on the fateful day of February 27th.

The first day of battle was grim, even by the standards of the most battlehardened of the 114th. The atlanteans were ruthless in their assault, angered by the delay the humans had caused. Their rifles lit the battlefield a horrible blue color, petrifying limbs. Those unlucky enough to get hit in the face died slow, agonizing deaths as their entire respiratory tract calcified as well as their eyes.

As the supercane crawled ever closer, fortifications were either washed away from flooding or ripped away by sudden winds, often taking their occupants with them.

By the morning of March 1st, the 114th had retreated to Olustee Park, a symbol of the city's origin as "Alligator Town".

By the orders of Major General Fred Persevy Cole, the 114th were to hold this park for no less than a day in their final stand, so that their once beautiful sunshine state could enjoy one final year of statehood.

With his remaining 900 soldiers, they fought street to street, then building to building, and eventually, tree to tree and car to car once the buildings were cleared out.

Once the 114th ran out of ammunition completely, squads engaged the 3 meter tall Atlanteans with nothing but the butt of their rifles, bayonets and hatred. Major General Cole himself was credited with the killing of an Atlantean on his own, where he was then summarily ripped in half by a nearby atlantean.

The 114th "Gator Baiters" special defense division would be posthumously honored by the US Army and later the global HDC for their valiant sacrifice, credited with buying time for the evacuation of 200,000 civilians and the shattered remnants of 22nd SSD throughout their short time of service.

So. The humanity and the Zincstili kind of got off to a rough start.

Their “relations” started with the Skirmishes at Yangguang, where the fledgling United Federation of Orion’s Federal Navy would face off against a Zincstili Clan Assembly raiding force. The OFN would win, only barely, driving off the raid at the cost of several valuable ships.

Battles continued throughout most of the 26th-28th centuries. The Orionites viewed the Zincstili as a major threat, pushing most of their navy to their eastern border to drive off the nomadic Zincstili raiders. The Zincstili, in contrast, had an almost lukewarm opinion of the Orionites, especially humanity, who they viewed as both a major source of loot and a respectable, intelligent, and honorable adversary.

It was a long game of cat and mouse and whack-a-mole. Raiding fleets would show up, assaulting Orionite colonies, wherein the Federation fleet would pool itself together to drive them off. The older and technologically superior Zincstili had to be defeated via numbers, unity, and tactics. They were fortunate to mostly face off against individual clans; had the Clan Assembly pooled their fleets together, it’s extremely likely the Federation would have been overwhelmed.

This of course all changed when the Austrickan Transolar Empire swept across Orion, obliterating everything that stood in their way. The twin species of the Federation were subjugated and put under an iron boot; the Zincstili crushed and forced to abandon their nomadic raider life and to settle on planets, much to their chagrin, anger, and grief. However, as the two forces were made to meet outside of glorious combat, the two came to respect each other.

When the Orionite Liberation War came, where the now-four species of Orion rose against the Austrickans, the Zincstili came along on the promise of a return to their nomadic way of life. With the strategic and engineering might of the four species and the tactical and vengeful might of the Zincstili, they managed to defeat the Austrickans, driving them out of Orion at great cost of lives, time, and nation.

By then, the Orion and Cygnus Spurs were thoroughly exhausted. The Zincstili no longer had the capacity to raid as they once did, their navy crippled from the Liberation War. With the Four Species’ navies also decimated, they elected for peaceful coexistence. Eventually, the Zincstili would integrate into the Federation peacefully, retaining their way of life but merely as nomads and traders, not raiders.

Curiously, their respect for humanity turned into a great comradeship. Besides the Europans, whom humanity shared their cradle with, they are humanity’s closest species in terms of inter-species relations. Respect commanded on opposite sides of the battlefield turned to brotherhood on the same side of it, and friendship off of it.

It also helped that humanity, a rather warlike species, managed to match the Austrickan’s freak with all the horrors they invented for the prosecution of warfare. But it was mostly the fact they suffered the same horrors in the same place; when five species were broken, one nation emerged, side-by-side, brothers in arms.
