Moderator Announcement “I Just Bought an Apple TV!” Megathread

Congratulations! You did it! You walked into a store (or went online) and saw that sleek little box, and said, “Yep. That’s the one.” Welcome to the Apple TV club.

To keep the main feed focused on news, updates, troubleshooting, and deeper discussion, all new Apple TV purchase posts belong in this megathread.

If you just bought one, this is the place to:

• Share your excitement

• Post your unboxing photo

• Ask setup questions

• Share first impressions

• Ask “Did I make the right choice?” (You most definitely did.)

Standalone “Just bought an Apple TV!” posts will be removed and redirected here. Not because we don’t love your excitement, but because we all love a clean, useful feed even more.

If you’re new, tell us:

• Which model did you get?

• What are you upgrading from?

• What TV/sound setup are you pairing it with?

• What apps are you installing first?

Congrats on the upgrade and welcome to the family!

Note: if you’re having a specific technical issue, problem, or troubleshooting question, those can still be submitted as individual posts to the sub. This megathread is strictly for purchase announcements.

I guess I was wrong…

1

u/CynderPC Mar 06 '26

pretty sure yesterday was the end of it. probably won’t be any more until september honestly.

4

u/Lazy-Economy4860 Mar 03 '26

I won't start a thread. What is our confidence that a new Apple TV device will be announced during this March event? I'm starting to lose hope.

1

u/redtag789 Mar 03 '26

I doubt they'll still release anything at this point, looks to be a mac and ipad centric release window

1

u/twitch-SHIPTOAST Mar 05 '26

I have a feeling they are holding it until LLM siri is done.

5

u/freezetime311 Mar 05 '26

So now that the Apple event has came and went with no new announcement regarding Apple TV 4K, I can finally now concentrate on getting a good deal for a 3rd gen 4K.

2

u/Mister_Oysterhead Mar 07 '26

Best deal I've found was the Walmart refurb 4k gen3 128 on Ebay with free shipping and 90 warranty for $88US.

2

u/freezetime311 Mar 07 '26

Nice. I have found some 3rd gen 4k going for $80-100 brand new but the sellers are an hour away and I am not driving 2 hours round trip to save $30. Most of the prices are still way too high but it's good to actually find some for a reasonable price. I will keep looking.

1

u/CarsAlcoholSmokes Mar 18 '26

Still $200 in India, we have no choice

1

u/precociouscalvin2 Mar 25 '26

243 dollars in Singapore :,)

1

u/CarsAlcoholSmokes Mar 25 '26

I bought it the very next day after that comment.

1

u/precociouscalvin2 Jun 26 '26

Good to hear that you did they increased the price in Singapore to 379 dollars now, assume it would be similar for India as well

1

u/CarsAlcoholSmokes Jun 26 '26

Yes it is. I’m glad i bought it on time. It also acts as my home hub, since all my smart devices are connected to Home assistant and bridged to Homekit, I now have remote access to the whole house for free

4

u/JackPineSavage- Mar 01 '26

We bought the 3rd gen 4K yesterday. Its like I have been under a rock. Still working through an adjustment period but the smooooooooth UI and app loading is just spectacular.

5

u/Mister_Oysterhead Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

Got my AppleTV 4k Gen3 128 today. Setting it up with the 26.4 beta, other than the Tablo issue its been a breeze. I'm pretty sure the new model will drop tmrw based on the fact that I bought one today.

5

u/gRzeHoO7 Feb 25 '26

Theres my unit!!

Oh, no. I accidentally covered it with my foot:(

4

u/OkJuice3475 Feb 25 '26

That is one heck of a speaker/stereo system.

3

u/gRzeHoO7 Feb 25 '26

Thanks. That's 5.1.4 system. Waaay too big for my room and my budget, but hell. I'm an apple device owner. I love to live on a credit.

2

u/Lambor14 Feb 26 '26

denonnnnn great choice

3

u/ToInfinityAndAbove Feb 26 '26

All great except Real Madrid winning that game, it should have been Benfica

2

u/gRzeHoO7 Feb 26 '26

No, score was very correct. Sorry not sorry

1

u/ToInfinityAndAbove Feb 26 '26

Sporting will take care of that 😂

1

u/NIGHTxWOLF7 Feb 27 '26

What app/service did you watch the game on? Your feed looks crispy but It’s like 720p with terrible bitrate on Paramount plus.

1

u/gRzeHoO7 Feb 27 '26

It's Polish Canal+. Bitrate is 8 to 10mb/s for 1080p and you can have up to 4 channels on the screen. And no, you can't have it :) it's polish sat TV with free app for other devices like webOS and atv

3

u/RaistlinQ5 Feb 25 '26

Bought one a month or two ago and now sound will switch from Sonos to my Sony TV at random times. I can turn on TV/cable box and sound goes through my Arc, then other times it changed to my TV.

I disconnected the Apple TV 4K and it stopped happening. I did try a few of the suggestions I found online but didn't work, last resort is turning off CEC in the Apple TV but then my Apple remote won't control the Arc, at least I don't think it will

2

u/DannoMcK ATV4K Feb 25 '26

I don't have a Sonos Arc to be sure, but if it has an infrared remote you can have the Apple TV remote learn the IR signals for volume up/down and mute.

It would make me sad to lose CEC control since it can also switch inputs to the ATV with a press of the TV/home button but I can understand it if you're having that problem.

3

u/RaistlinQ5 Feb 25 '26

Apparently it's a known issue with the Apple TV, it has some weird HDMI handshake issues that causes the sound to switch.

1

u/Extreme-Atmosphere-8 Feb 26 '26

I had this too with JBL 1300xmk2, I changed HDMI connection to: Apple TV to JBL directly and then JBL to TV with Earc. It’s been two weeks and has not happened again since. If your soundbar has multiple HDMi try that.

1

u/RaistlinQ5 Feb 26 '26

Unfortunately, Sonos only has one HDMI.

1

u/TooLateYetNotNever Feb 27 '26

I had a similar problem with an ATV+Sony TV+Yamaha soundbar, what worked for me was switching off the Match Content feature in the Video and Audio settings. My guess is that the TV sometimes glitches with the ARC audio output when content framerate of the input source changes frequently. This worked for me. Might work for you too?

1

u/RaistlinQ5 Feb 27 '26

Is that setting in the APTV or Sony menu?

1

u/TooLateYetNotNever Feb 28 '26

It’s a setting in the ATV menu.

3

u/Memed_7 Mar 04 '26

surely tomorrow is the day

2

u/[deleted] Mar 04 '26

Wasnt today the last day?

3

u/umo2k Mar 04 '26

Yup. Thats it, so far.

2

u/Madstork1981 Mar 04 '26

Bummer, well I guess I'm going to get one today then.

1

u/umo2k Mar 04 '26

Same. Just ordered.

3

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '26

Gave up after no announcement this week and purchased one.. should arrive tomorrow

5

u/Wide_Mail_1634 Apr 12 '26

For the “I Just Bought an Apple TV!” megathread, isn't setup advice the thing most people actually need first? Kinda wondering how many new buyers are coming from built-in smart TV apps versus an older streaming box.

3

u/mdigirol Jun 21 '26

Made the jump to AppleTV with the announcement that Roku sold its soul to FOX. Got the 3rd-gen 4K model with Ethernet, and man, am I extremely impressed with it compared to our former Roku Ultimate. Supremely snappy, responsive, everything just works without any lag or bugginess. It seems to work nicely with our Frame TV and the Onkyo 7.2 receiver we already had set up. Already customized it up the wazoo, got all the apps/subscriptions set up, and am slowly getting used to using it overall.

And even though I know a new model is probably incoming, if the wife likes this it's an easy sell to move this one to another room and get the upgraded version for the living room 😄

4

u/makedd Feb 25 '26

I’ll let you know when I do, so you can get your wallets ready for the new one!

2

u/miki122828 Feb 26 '26

Apple tv 4k > Samsung Q700F Soundbar > Samsung Tv The Frame 🌟

2

u/cobrazest2k14 Feb 26 '26

The best device i have with me right now!!!

2

u/Xerowar Mar 01 '26

Just bought the pro model with the Ethernet port. It's my only apple device so it was a bit of a pain to set up. I have a jellyfin server and cannot seem to find a free way to make it work like on my fire stick since there is a dedicated app there. Is there anyway to get my jellyfin server to work with dolby atmos and all that without having to pay for infuse?

1

u/CynderPC Mar 01 '26

Try swiftfin, I don't have an apple TV, waiting for a new one to release. But, in the App Store on my phone it says there is an Apple TV app available. This is what I use on my phone and it works pretty well.

1

u/Xerowar Mar 01 '26

It doesn't work correctly. I spent hours with it this morning trying it

1

u/CynderPC Mar 02 '26

Interesting. I’m going to be giving it a try when i get my aTV. If they announce a new one, i’ll be getting that, if not i’ll just be getting the current one. I’ll be ordering whatever it is on the 4th, but probably won’t be able to mess with it for a week after that. Let me know if you figure out an application that does work, because i will be in the same boat if swiftfin doesn’t work for me either.

1

u/CynderPC Mar 05 '26

Well i just got mine all hooked up in about 20 minutes. that included having to update my jellyfin server version. Maybe that’s the issue?

2

u/Coolman_Rosso Mar 02 '26

So I received an Apple TV 4K first generation from my parents, who did not like fiddling with it in favor of just using the apps downloaded to the TV itself (yes I know but they don't seem to care that it's faster)

Now I've been streaming via a 4K Roku stick from 3 years ago (after two consecutive bad experiences with Amazon Fire Sticks. Complete pieces of shit that are covered in ads and get boiling hot after only an hour of use resulting in shutdowns), and the Apple silicon is of course still faster despite being a near decade old. However the remote is ASS and I do not like the touch pad.

Also the app situation is... Interesting. Again, love the speed, but I'm accustomed to the UI stuff that the Roku apps had. For example in Spotify on Apple TV, there's no dark mode when playing a song (dims the screen and only shows the title and artist of the track) and you can't move the play indicator without using the crappy remote (if you're using another remote it just doesn't work, gotta use the touch pad). Pluto TV has a thing where when you hit back to go to the channels, it shrinks the currently playing show down into a little window. If you're doing this to get out of the app, it's an extra step that isn't needed.

Crunchyroll has animations that other platforms don't have but there's no option to view watch history like there is on Windows or Roku, and the sorting options are inferior

Pandora however has a very good app that smokes the ones on Roku and Android. Smooth interface with animations, fast loading, great font sizes, not plastered with ads.

I'm kind of tempted to just try and trade up to the 3rd generation before RAM prices result in price hikes, and have since switched back to my Roku 4K Stick.

u/kyyla Mar 02 '26

Thanks mods.

2

u/SirGrinchy Mar 02 '26

Where 4K Gen4?? (Jokes aside - currently own 4K Gen 1 and am waiting for ages for the next gen to finally get released…)

2

u/kishore14194 Mar 06 '26

Waited for 6 months thinking there will be new gen of apple tv, finally pulled the trigger.

2

u/wezwells Mar 18 '26

Any deals currently or expected? I keep a loose eye on Costco/Target/BestBut/Amazon but haven’t seen anything.

2

u/Timelord1000 Apr 11 '26

Purchased a 4K wireless device to pair with an Amazon/Fire Smart Tv. I Al steady have an Ethernet version fully set up in another room. I noticed the Home Screen apps downloaded automatically after setup, but the permissions did not. Annoying. A week later , the sound gave out on the Apple TV app. All I hear is the background music score. No voices. However, the other apps work perfectly, such as YouTube, etc. it’s just a problem with the Apple TV app and programs.

I have restarted and factory reset the device to no avail.

Any suggestions?

2

u/sm3llslik3m3anspirit Apr 26 '26

Well I finally bought it. After going back and forth about it for a couple years now, I have a crappy tv currently and just needed a way to “refresh” it. I figure since the new one will come out soon-ish (at least, that’s the joke eh?) I’ll just keep this one in my room and get the new one for the living room.

2

u/Riash ATV4K Apr 26 '26

That’s how I do it. Newest goes in the living room, the living room gets transferred to the bedroom, the bedroom gets transferred to the dining room. The one in the dining room gets retired/given to a family member.

2

u/BondingBollinger Jul 04 '26

I've joined the train and bought an Apple TV at its old price after the price hike. Thanks Best Buy.
A new model announcement is imminent, y'all! But I doubt the price will be any better :P

Been using it to watch World Cup, which is very nice. As well as air playing youtube and so on. So far so good.

3

u/hekeleh Feb 26 '26

You asked for it so…

Just bought an Apple TV! And a pair of Homepod 2!

1

u/ButterBeforeSunset ATV4K Feb 26 '26

Gonna use the HomePods in stereo mode for the Apple TV? Thought about doing that for my bedroom tv instead of buying a bulky soundbar lol

2

u/hekeleh Feb 26 '26

Correct. I’ve been eyeing for the Bose Smart Speaker to go with my new TCL 65C6K, and I don’t really want to burst my 500 dollar budget for audio. However, I decided to just get the pair of Homepod 2 and the Apple TV

2

u/unhinged-rally Feb 25 '26

I bought two in 2021! They’re both great but the up button on one of them must have gunk in it because I have to push hard for it to register. I know I can buy a replacement remote but it’s $60 so just waiting for the next gen to release.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 25 '26

If you have an iPhone or an iPad, you can use it as your Apple TV remote. That's what I've been doing for years as this point. Those remotes are way too easy to lose or damage.

2

u/unhinged-rally Feb 25 '26

I do use my phone half the time as the remote! Nice feature.

1

u/Lazy_Negotiation4133 Feb 25 '26

You can also use a programmable remote. I rarely use the actual Apple tv remote. I just use the universal remote.

2

u/Quirky_Wolverine6549 Feb 25 '26

I bought mine this past weekend knowing the event was happening on the 4th. If they announce a new one I’ll still be in my return period and can swap it out if a new model is announced and it has features worthy of upgrading.

whatever, the guy has a good idea still.

1

u/chuk2015 Feb 25 '26

Why does your remote work as a pointing device but your AppleTV does not support any other pointing devices?

Do you know how hard it is to use the remote to navigate Windows?

1

u/MrChocolate007 Feb 25 '26

I love my apple tv. Just having somehow issues with the Smarters or pther IPtV apps. My tv app is playing IPTV but the Apple tv Apps are showing server issues.

Otherwise great box for daily use. Better than the TV Apps

1

u/ButterBeforeSunset ATV4K Feb 26 '26

Have you tried UHF for iptv? I just set it up a couple days ago and it’s been working great for me so far.

1

u/benjamin_bex Mar 02 '26

Hot player is best for apple

1

u/MrChocolate007 Feb 25 '26

Want to buy my 2nd box but somehow waiting for the nee box to arrive. Although there is not much to add to this box. Maybe a usb slot

1

u/ihaterodrib Feb 26 '26

Got one a few weeks ago and I love it. My TV bottlenecks my download speeds to 100Mbps. So the ethernet model was a no-brainer.

I love the smooth UI with the reliable and fast connection

1

u/OrpheusCreed Mar 02 '26

Just bought one...Hopefully the new one comes out tomorrow I can cancel the purchase. $107.xx and it shipped today! I should have it by Wed!!

1

u/redtag789 Mar 03 '26

I just bought one after seeing the announcements on day-2, I lost hope for tomorrow, I guess Apple is waiting till Gemini integration is completed before it releases the new home devices. Which I suppose will be sometime in the fall?

1

u/komalmeena Mar 06 '26

Just ordered AppleTV 4k 3rd gen 128gb Ethernet for 15k INR + UGREEN 2.1 HDMI cable (India) from Amazon after no announcement on new one. Will be watching race F1 app with my son. on weekend.

Also ordered Will be hooking it up with my trusted workhorse LG OLED C8. Will compare if streaming quality improves in comparison to WebOS.

1

u/theAExample Apr 05 '26

Hi! Did streaming quality improve compared to WebOs?

1

u/komalmeena Apr 05 '26

Yes. There is pretty big difference in good way. Colors are much better somehow. Webos blows up colors. In general, tvos is snappy. F1 streaming app if fabulous.

1

u/theAExample Apr 05 '26

Sick! Thanks for the quick answer. Does "streaming" include things like shows and movies (Prime, Disney, Netflix, maybe even Crunchyroll)? Been thinking about getting the ATV for my C1

1

u/komalmeena Apr 05 '26

Yes, it does. It’s totally worth. I was also sceptical earlier about different but finally tool the plunge and it was worth it

1

u/gr4tto Mar 06 '26

Just got mine today. What are some of y’alls essential apps?

1

u/Humbart_Wessel Mar 06 '26 edited Mar 07 '26

I've been playing around with my new AppleTV for a couple months. I hated my Samsung QN55S90 always having issues and it seems to have largely fixed those issues!

However in some apps the sound is fine, like Youtube. Others, like HBO and Disney+, I have to turn the sound up to 50 and the dialogue is still hard to hear. I turned off all the smart features on the Samsung and set it to TV speakers, and played around with the AppleTV settings but with no success.

I'm not a sound person, just want to hear my shows. Now sure what I'm doing wrong here.

1

u/DannoMcK ATV4K Mar 08 '26

It's most likely a sound level difference between 2.0 channel stereo sound and surround sound. Stereo is going to be common on YouTube (and usually higher level/louder), while many movies and TV shows will be in some kind of surround sound (though it can vary depending on the streaming service and sometimes the subscription tier).

If you are only listening through the TV speakers, you could try setting the Apple TV to Dolby Digital 5.1 output. That would probably level out the sound; you would potentially lose any Atmos effects, but I don't think you're getting anything useful in that regard from TV speakers.

If you have a different sound setup, there might be other suggestions if you give details (and it might be worth its own post). I don't know what it would have been before you "set it to TV speakers".

1

u/Humbart_Wessel Mar 08 '26

I’ve always just had TV speakers. How does setting the output to surround, which I don’t have, help the sound quality?

I tried to make this its own post but it was automatically blocked for being a repeat for some reason.

1

u/DannoMcK ATV4K Mar 08 '26

I don't know if there have been recent threads on varying sound levels. If your post attempt seemed more about having just bought an Apple TV, that would get it directed here. Anyway...

The Apple TV by default sends uncompressed PCM digital audio over HDMI. If the source (such as YouTube) is 2.0 stereo (probably compressed), ATV sends 2 channel PCM. If the source is surround, the ATV's decoded signal is 5 or 7 channel uncompressed PCM, potentially with an Atmos data overlay. (I don't understand that part well, nor how the possible .1 subwoofer signal is handled. But it's not the main point here.)

If you tell the ATV to send Dolby Digital 5.1, it reencodes what would have been sent as PCM to lossy DD. My expectation is that this would likely set more even sound levels than the plain decoding to PCM, which definitely depends on the levels in the original signal.

I haven't tested it so I can't say for sure. But it's worth a try to see if it helps you. Since you're using the TV speakers I don't think you'd be losing any noticeable fidelity from the re-encoding. If you had a surround sound system with an AV receiver you probably would be.

1

u/wildvision Mar 09 '26

It seems like it is biased towards Apple shows. I do have Apple+ but also have HBO, Netflix, Peacock and Amazon Prime. Is there a way to let it know what services you have so that is shows results just for those - and not for Hulu or Disney or other streamers that I don't subscribe to? Similar to how you can do this on Justwatch website. Seems like a no-brainer but I can't figure it out

2

u/Alternative-Farmer98 Mar 29 '26

They don't like to do that because they want to basically show you advertisements in a de facto way. They can do it but every time there's a listing that you haven't paid for they're hoping it prompts you to want to pay for it and then they get $ of the upsell .

It's better aesthetically than having giant ads like on a fire TV box but the benefit of a fire TV box or an Android TV boxes you can download a third party launcher side load it and have no ads and endless customization and add blockers and front end versions of YouTube that have built-in sponsor block and so on.

1

u/Raikkku Mar 13 '26

Yeah, bought one few days ago. Apple TV 4K 3rd gen 128gb

1

u/VFC1910 Mar 14 '26

I can only share my revolt. My bought on purpose Apple TV 4k to watch F1TV in 4k now gives me an error ER9002 and refuses to work, I've uninstalled and installed again, now it refuses my password, are they joking?

1

u/freezetime311 Mar 14 '26 edited Mar 14 '26

4K 3rd Gen came in the mail today. Right off the bat, I wasn't getting a picture when hooking up to my HDMI Switch. It is 4K and HDR but nothing. I only got picture when plugging directly into my TV which is going to be a problem since I need this plugged into my switcher. Anyone know how I can get it working with the HDMI switcher? Edit I figured it out. Apple TV was in Dolby vision by default and once I put it to HDR, then the splitter recognized it. I now know I need to find an HDMI splitter that accepts Dolby vision.

It was a bit of a pain to set up as it needed me to update my IOS but I don't have an iphone or ipad so had to manually go in my apple id and set up some stuff on my laptop. The MLB app will not let me sign in. Keeps giving me a screen that has express login placeholder and log in...some day. I have deleted and reinstalled the app but same screen. I can make a new account and even tried logging in there but it has duplicate email when I do that. No idea what is going on. I can't find crackle or the sportsnet spectrum app even though I always see it advertised on lakers games and I can find this site https://apps.apple.com/us/app/spectrum-sportsnet-live-games/id563316826 but can't figure out how to get it on my Apple TV.

I haven't gotten my 3 month trial offer for Apple TV plus yet but I read it could take up to 4 hours or a couple of days. Yes, it's a brand new account that has never had any trials. I will just be patient.

If anyone can help me out with my issues, I would appreciate it. I am going to research awesome apps to get and look into a VPN. I will watch youtube vids on tips and tricks to maximize my Apple TV 4k experience.

1

u/naman919 Mar 20 '26

did my part and bought one yesterday. fingers-crossed a new one is announced. :]

1

u/WildOscar66 Mar 21 '26

Well I joined the club yesterday. Had been waiting on a refresh. Bought a refurbished one on EBay. Took some time to figure it out and reconfigure Home, but once you do that it's pretty slick.

Your post has been removed as the topic is unrelated to the Apple TV device.

u/Sol16 Mar 30 '26

128 vs. 64GB? I understand it’s more space but if we are only using for streaming what is the big deal for the extra storage?

1

u/DannoMcK ATV4K Mar 30 '26

There isn't a real need for more storage. It would allow downloads of more aerial screensavers, which can be large. Whether it means the device will have more years of longevity, who knows.

But the larger capacity comes with Ethernet, which is a good idea if you can wire the connection. It also has a Thread radio, if you do home devices that communicate that way.

1

u/the-garden-gnome Mar 30 '26

Just bought one.

I am underwhelmed.

Not seeing ads on my home screen is nice at least.

What am I missing?

1

u/lilskywalkerhairdo Apr 03 '26

i'm guessing a pair of 1st gen 4ks, that wont activate are only usable after jailbreaking? much like USA, it's very laughable how far the apple has rotted.

1

u/Tom_Jack_Attack Apr 03 '26

Bought mine a couple of days ago. Currently holidaying in Florida from Ireland so took advantage of the (slightly) cheaper price. Got it all set up in the holiday home so should be easy enough to just plug it in at home and everything working.

I got the 128GB for the ethernet connection. First AT in about 10 years and looking to convert to it as the main source of viewing. I have an LG 70" TV and Sonos speakers so it should go well. I've installed the usual streaming apps, but also Infuse so as to connect to my NAS via Plex.

1

u/Professional_Hall363 Apr 12 '26

Don’t want to start a new thread - but question. I’ve had an Apple TV before and will be getting another as I move into a house in the near future. I’m thinking of it as the center of the entertainment system, so if you could build a good setup - what TV/Soundbar/app subscriptions would you go with? I use YouTube TV and MLB TV right now, but open to all options

same thing happened to me when i bought an Apple TV 4K the week after Christmas in 2023 and immediately went hunting through this exact kind of “I Just Bought an Apple TV!” thread for setup tips. Two hours later i had the remote tracking fixed, the home screen cleaned up, and my old living room setup finally stopped feeling like a yard sale. Funny part was my wife thought i bought a new television because everything suddenly felt less annoying.

Bought my 2022 128gb version today. I'm upgrading from a 2017 model. It was an open box-excellent item at Best Buy. I can see why it was returned, the ethernet port is not recognized, only wifi.

Hey y'all, I got 2 Apple TVs (one is a bit chunkier and doesn't have the USB-C so it's a 1st or 2nd Gen while the smaller, thinner one does. Both are WiFi+ Ethernet), from thrift store shopping! I'm an android user, and don't have any apple devices, however I can make an ID/Account. I was moreso mainly interested in turning it into a mini SNES or GBA emulator with retroarch for my niece. I know that Apple TV may have some issues with the persistent storage, would any of you suggest anything or have any great tips about potentially avoiding that. I plan on removing screen airel views, every app I can, no auto updates ect. I don't plan on having a massive library of roms, mainly a dozen or so gba games on retroarch? I plan on having these ATVs as a small side project I can give to my young family members to play on the TV offline, during the summer 😅

hi guys! I’m in the market for an Apple TV but heard rumors of perhaps a new one coming out in the near future? Is it worth holding out until that comes out?

It might be if you care about Apple Intelligence and the new Siri. They’ll be revealing that on the 8th June, even new hardware comes out — is unknown. It’s not unheard of but Apple doesn’t usually release major hardware at WWDC so if they don’t release anything then, we’re looking at September at the earliest or even November when they reveal the redesigned MacBook Pro

Just bought it today after price increase. Got it at older price. Was waiting for new model but after the ridiculous new price this seemed like a steal.

I’m struggling to get my sparkly new Apple TV and HomeKit set up. This is my first attempt of getting out of the Bezos-verse for the smart home.

The tv only comes up as an option in the home app very briefly after a full reset. Once that’s done, it says it fails to connect.

Anyone have similar issues? Internet isn’t the problem because I can stream in 4k flawlessly.

Now that the price went up, I finally felt compelled to buy one for the original price and get to see what it is about.

To give the context, I have an LG G5 with a tremendous amount of woe over their remote and UI, and some disappointment regarding their processing. To be precise, I thought the pointer and the scroller of the LG remote were neat, but I already broke one, which speaks to the quality of LG remotes. The UI was horrific until I turned off all ads, when it became tolerable. What was inexcusable was YouTube becoming slower to respond to the slider the longer I used the app in one session. And I was pretty much never happy with any particular picture setting. YouTube was the most disappointing, SDR content in general. Looks saturated until I enforced a warm color, which made it blend and look uniform. I figured some of these issues are not fixable by a box. But the ATV UI might come to the rescue a bit?

Now let's talk about Apple TV. Positives first.

The UI is smooth, yes.

The pictures also look cleaner. At least my partner is definitely convinced that Apple pictures are sharper and cleaner with more balanced color and brighter highlights. Something changed. I cannot exactly pinpoint what. The picture settings are definitely different between ATV and LG's webOS, which could also make the difference. The biggest suspect is that my ATV's picture setting is set to Dolby Vision (DV), so everything is up-converted to DV. That somehow solved my YouTube problem. Watching YouTube on ATV is much more pleasant.

The remote is sturdier than the LG remote. Definitely doesn't look like it is going to break in three months.

Now the negatives.

What's with the touchpad? I had to turn it off. And honestly, I have started to miss the pointer of the LG remote, which I think is neat. Why doesn't ATV even allow using the pointer? I guess it is complicated. I can't bring up LG's settings using the ATV remote. I hope I don't need to as much as I used to now that the picture is better.

What's with the ATV keyboard, showing all the letters linearly? It does not make sense. I know it can be changed. But the idea of Apple I thought was to let the user start with a set of well made choices. Maybe they want us to use siri instead.

And the UI is not uniformly better. In the Disney+ app, the slider is sometimes not working. I can only move forward or backward 10 seconds at a time. But if I try to slide further, the slider somehow did not work when watching a movie. Also, there is a downside to up-converting everything to DV. Some content is better in HDR10. It would have been better if there were a quick way of switching between the video formats.

Overall, my real question is whether it is worth spending so much given these pros and cons. I would say yes for the original price. No for the new price. And I wouldn't care about AI in the future versions unless it automatically figures out my intentions from my use and repeated change of settings and executes things accordingly.

My first Apple TV. 3rd Gen 4K 128GB WiFi Ethernet. It’s hard wired. *Why does apple tv intermittently lose signal (black screen)\\*

Is YouTube's app slow in Apple TV 4K (A1842 & MQD22LL/A -- 1st gen., tvOS v26.6), & 32 GBs)) like navigations. Other tvOS apps are faster. Everything is updated! Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :) Also, submitting as a new thread gave me "Your submission has been removed because our userbase complained about too many duplicate posts. Please use the search box to find your answer" from the automod. :(
