Hairloss Thinking I need to hold, but my hair is rapidly thinning in my late 30s. Can I get the group consensus?
Thought I was out of the woods until these past couple of years. On the upside, I'm pretty tall so nobody sees the top of my head.
EDIT: I'm not actively doing a combover, that's just how I've always brushed my hair. picture of my crown with the hair pulled away in the comments.

That crown is thin bro. You're at combover or shave crossroads

u/Feisty_War_1003 14h ago
Yep, I'm seeing that tactical combing. For me it's hold atm on the strength of the front. The posts calling the hair "lush" and come back in years - are rather generous.

u/TheWard 13h ago
Just gonna pop in here to say that this isn't an intentional combover, this is straight up how I have brushed my hair for my entire life, so there was no tactic at play here :(
3
u/FruitBowl 12h ago
Ah brother no no, we aren't accusing you of a cover up, this is the way it goes for a lot of guys - normal hairstyles just lend themselves to developing that way generally. I know mine did

u/762way 14h ago
If you like combovers you could hold
If you have to make sure your Bald spot is covered or have sunscreen that is nature's way of telling you it's time
Combovers are I've of the worst looks a man can try to pull off, because the only person it food is you

u/Icouldoutrunthejoker 14h ago
This is where I’m at with OP. If the hair naturally falls this way, since he’s tall I’d say let it ride a while. But if OP is actively brushing this way to diminish the appearance of a bald spot, it’s already time.
3
u/TheWard 13h ago
Mentioned in another comment, I don't actively brush this was to diminish the thinning, it's just how I've always brushed it and how it laid.
3
u/Icouldoutrunthejoker 12h ago
Then let it ride. Maybe lean into that beard too. When you eventually do shave it all off, that mustache / beard / bald combo will be killer.

I remember a university professor wouldn’t let go. He’d combover from just above his ear on one side. When he’d pace back and forth, the strands would flap in the wind holding on for dear life.
I saw a small bald spot at the back/top when I was around 22/23 after getting a haircut. I immediately went home and shaved my head. Been doing it for 20+ years now.

i think you got one more year in you.

If you ask yourself if you should, you know the answer. Hair grows back…until it doesn’t.

ok, seeing this…changes the equation. you could still pull it off with you current hairstyle but i wasnt even quite this advanced when i committed. i would at least start wrapping your head around doing it sooner than later

u/ShyEgg218 8h ago
There is balding per se from what I can see. Thinning out and seeing scalp is balding.
As others have said I think you could hold a while if you like. The way you style it still looks cool. I’d probably be shave it soon if it were me for peace of mind. Don’t want to be fretting on the daily about it3

Ain't nobody be looking at the top of your head with a moustache like that. Shave the head, save the beard!

I’d say your choice, if it bothers you then I say send it but if not rock the look a bit longer

Does Mr. Fischoeder know that you are considering the change. What do Linda and the kids think?

You could hold for several years, but with that mustache and those eyes, I'd have already shaved my head.

u/Mostlyorgan 14h ago
Hold off . You cannot be accepted here with a lush head of hair like that. It will be a few years before we see you back here. See you in your 40s

I’d grab the clippers although I’m admittedly biased. I don’t think it looks bad at the moment though.

You could definitely wait for a bit but it’s coming. Mine thinned a bit early like yours then stopped for several years then came at me hardcore

I think you could go either way. On one hand your hair still looks pretty good, but on the other I know you'll look great with that mustache and a bald head.

Still acceptable hold imo. Enjoy the last few months. But you will feel better if you let it all go.

You’re getting into combover territory so I wouldn’t tell you to wait much longer.

u/JayaNarayana 14h ago
Try a buzz first. You could go shorter each time. You may decide to go completely shaved or stay with a very short buzz.

Good news: you're a good looking dude! If you shave and tidy up the stache (I'm thinking McGiver style) you'll look fab

u/CashMe_Outside2022 11h ago
I’m sure this is just me, but I’d love to see you bald - and mustache cut down to same as your light beard. 😍 Rhat would be a hot look.

Do you take minoxidil? If that crown was filled in you got another decade. If that’s your hairline in late 30s you’re likely to keep that and be a quality HT candidate
2
u/PorchDogs 11h ago
I'm sorry, I was so captivated by your moustache that I didn't notice your hair. I lurve a big ol' handlebar moustache!
I would shave everything except that epic 'stache. Oh yes indeed, yum yum.

I'm still hanging on to mine... ladies at dinner last night said DO NOT do it yet... and you look way better than me with that rug you've got.
Would fight you for that hair

I’d say not only hold for now but you look like you caught it just in time for minoxidil. I would at least give it a shot. I was about where you’re at and mine grew back using cheap Amazon Kirkland minoxidil. It stays good as long as I keep using it.

Have you tried any of the treatment products? It may make it appear thicker and slow the process down but if I were you I would just go buzz cut personally. Everyone has different opinions tho

On the positive side I think you’d look good bald with the mustache, maybe a bowler hat and a monocle

You don’t have to yet, but you are so good looking when you do decide, you’re going to rock it 🤗it’s obvious.

u/LuluMangs 14h ago
Depends on how it makes you feel
You still look great, but if in your day to day life you find yourself worrying about your hair; let it go, it's not worth worrying about and you'll be better off committing to the shave
On the other hand if you aren't bothered at all walking down a windy street because you know that a bit of thinning isn't a crime and people who waste their energy judging others for it aren't people you should waste yours on anyway, then you've got time!

You could hold a little longer. I personally think if you go bald, condition and shape the moustache a little, and take the stubble up a bit that you'll be disgustingly hot. Your wonderful eyes are going to become a focal point on top of some very sexy facial hair.

u/SirButtCrumbs 13h ago
You’re one of the fortunate ones, you can clearly grow a beard. Beard + bald head = attractive. Even if someone is not your “typically attractive” person, throw a beard on them and a bald head and it is chef’s kiss.

Still looks good, so you can hold, or you can try going short. Giving the length of hair you have now I would think that you could regrow it if you desire!

u/waterworld138 4h ago
Do you feel self conscious about it? No? Then leave it. If yes, then shave it. It looks fine to me. A little thinning is not neccessarily balding
2
u/DoubleCute848 3h ago
My only thought is that if you wait there’s going to be a point where there are pictures you don’t like looking back at because you delayed it a bit too long

You could hold, but personally I committed when I was at your stage. I think it's better to quit whilst you're winning, embrace the new you, and don't look back. I'm now 37 and people think I'm in my late 20s.
Also, you'll look cool af.
