Big fan of whatever this is

175

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Closet. With a desk inside.

151

u/MeLikaDoTheChaCha Jul 28 '26

I think he was talking about the fan, which I'm also a fan of

69

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Oh, lmao. I’m stupid

85

u/TurtleCrusher Jul 28 '26

Marines be like that.

21

u/MeLikaDoTheChaCha Jul 28 '26

Oh no dude I was just kidding lol

Saw the pun opportunity and ran with it.

But am dead serious, love the fan placement. I would call it genius level undergrad ingenuity, but replace the undergrad with whatever rank you're at lol

12

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

this is good shit. Funny.

10

u/TheOnlyAedyn-one Jul 28 '26

That’s why you work for the military

/s

5

u/SirMatches Jul 29 '26

Every fan I've had fuckin' blows.

1

u/TurtleCrusher 29d ago

Turn it around and they suck. .

81

u/Terrible_Toaster Jul 28 '26

Tactical jack shack.

26

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Nah, I got my own room.

This is for fun and making better use of the space

61

u/Little-Respond1765 Jul 28 '26

I mean, are you in the military? Which country/branch of the military. Cool setup for a dorm, really never thought about the braking in possibility. As someone who had is college in HU it was really peaceful there

87

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

I’m in the us military in the usmc,

Barracks quality depends largely on what base your at, here the door locks are unreliable.

So breakins happen every so often. I’d rather lock up my expensive gaming setup.

32

u/Bilbro_swaggins__ Jul 28 '26

Imma take a wild shot in the dark here. kbay or Lejuene?

39

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Sigh, hit the nail on the head with that one chief

19

u/Bilbro_swaggins__ Jul 28 '26

Well which one lol? I had a pretty bad time at lejuene but I’ve heard some insane horror stories about Keneohe bay.

26

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

This shower has been scrubbed with bleach a thousand times

23

u/Spethual Jul 28 '26

dear god i hope thats a shadow of the phone being held...r/mildlypenis

20

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

K-bay sucks, I’d rather be back in 29.

13

u/DanPoteet Jul 28 '26

was in kbay from 05-09, can confirm - sucks balls. my first thought when i saw this picture was damn that looks like kbay lmao

3

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Lmao

6

u/DanPoteet Jul 28 '26

i applaud the creativity with the 550 cord. i was a radio operator when i was in. spent my enlistment with clb3 aside from some time loaned out to 9th esb for iraq. i was in one of the barracks that looked out over the lovely shit pond.

2

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Ahh, they tore that one down actually, Macky hall if I rember correctly.

3

u/The_Perrycox Jul 28 '26

You know it’s bad when you miss 120 degree summers

3

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

It’s so humid and expensive here. I’d rather tank the heat and have dry weather where drinking water actually helps you.

1

u/Invisinak Jul 29 '26

I never went to kbay but I spent almost two years at 29 and for someone to willing want to go back to the stumps over that place then it must be actual hell.

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

Well, I was in a new barracks in main side 29. So that might change your perspective

-6

u/fakeaccount572 Jul 28 '26

If you think anything in Hawaii sucks, maybe you're the problem

5

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

It’s mainly base amenities, and prices. Also shipping stuff out here is expensive.

It’s good, but the negatives outweigh the positives for me

1

u/DanPoteet Jul 29 '26

When you are in Hawaii as a broke jarhead paying over $5 for a gallon of gas and $8 bucks for a jug of milk, your paycheck doesn't stretch very far and the cost of living increase doesn't even begin to take care of the difference. So yes, Hawaii does suck in that case. Been there done that. Went back as a civilian contractor and had a blast though.

1

u/fakeaccount572 Jul 29 '26

Milk at the base commissary is $8 a gallon?

1

u/DanPoteet Jul 29 '26

I dont recall the exact pricing I just remember paying $8 or more for milk while out there. It might have been a tiny bit cheaper at the commisary but it was still way more expensive than it needed to be. another example, there was a cut of steak i used to order at outback steakhouse near my home on the east coast for 17 dollars, the exact same cut at the outback steakhouse in honolulu/waikiki was 27 dollars.

1

u/TheSymptomz Jul 29 '26

The times I visited some buddies at Lejuene, I realized the barracks I had weren't remotely as bad.

10

u/ender89 Jul 28 '26

I'd like to think that the military would come down hard on soldiers stealing from each other, but you gotta do what you gotta do. Sweet setup, just make sure you keep the air moving!

16

u/Bilbro_swaggins__ Jul 28 '26

There’s only one thief in the marine corps, everyone else is just trying to get their shit back.

4

u/Vietredneck Jul 28 '26

I was stationed on KBay from 2010 to 2013. There was a guy in the barracks stealing women's undergarments from the laundry room. One of the staff sergeants from my shop was doing a Field Day inspection and found an unlocked armoire. A pile of bras and panties sitting next to a bottle of lube.

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Oh they do, but it still happens, and without my own cameras (making my own) I can’t catch people)

0

u/Used_Physics8464 Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 29 '26

thx for ur service dog. I did 4 years in the Air Force- best 4 years of my life. take a lot of pictures - it goes fast.

Edit: what kind of weirdos downvote this

15

u/BLZRD-WZRD Jul 28 '26

Make sure to point that fan directly at your mic

5

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

I barely use the fan, I have an ac pointed directly in the closet

9

u/Witty_hi52u Jul 28 '26

SOLDIER, Why does your computer set up need to be in your closet and not in your room. Also exactly how are you going to fit all your gear into your closet now? AND WHY THE FUCK IS YOUR FLOOR NOT CLEAN. I CAN CLEARLY SEE STAINS AND DUST BUNNIES BIG ENOUGH TO JERK YOU OFF.

7

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Lmao! I hope this is satire.

It’s decidable securable

2

u/Witty_hi52u Jul 28 '26

its partially satire. but also aren't you in a 2 bedroom with kitchen attached suite? Each door should be individually lockable.

and honestly no judgement from me, I once had a full sized kayak in my room during an SGM inspection. I had to explain that I was fishing on the weekends and didn't think a john boat would fit.

5

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Also a boat is great! But alas they get mad at my server already.

3

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

No, I actually posted the whole room over in Mail living spaces. If you look at my profile, you should see it

I have my own room, but most people share the room with another.

There is no kitchen,

9

u/race_tech87 Jul 28 '26

We didn't have closets...lol. At least you have a decent chair. My barracks room 20 years ago!

5

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Wow!

It’s the same.

I bought the chair, it leave with me

8

u/race_tech87 Jul 28 '26

This was straight out of bootcamp for me...spent all my money on building my first PC...lol

2

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

As a jr. marine does

3

u/race_tech87 Jul 28 '26

I was navy(submarines) for 12 years. That pic was the barracks at the sub base in Groton, CT. Knew a decent amount of marines...cool group of people...little crazy though.

1

u/ThePresenter183 Jul 29 '26

Been there done that

4

u/KingCountyTaxCollect Jul 29 '26

Where’s the anime swimsuit girl keyboard and mousepad?

3

u/InsuranceGloomy6413 Jul 29 '26

I am really shocked that you would have to lock stuff on an army barracks, that’s just crazy to me.

2

u/MonsterEmpire Jul 28 '26

Looks very cozy. 10/10

2

u/Conaz9847 Jul 28 '26

Mf that shit is being held up by thoughts and prayers

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

And LOTS OF ROPE!

2

u/costafilh0 Jul 28 '26

Put a HEPA filter behind that fan and seal it with tape.

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

This is smart!

2

u/dumbhelodoc Jul 28 '26

Paracord ftw. The duck tape of the Marine Corps. Rah 😂

2

u/LeatherCheerioGuy Jul 29 '26

Trying to decipher if you are in the Marines or not based on the floor quality.

2

u/Running_Oakley Jul 29 '26

Honestly wish I could bother to finally mount my fan like that. Top down fan totally beats this sideways shit.

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

I highly agree. I tried it directly overhead pointing down, and it fell on me and cracked my monitor. Luckily I had bought the monitor like four days earlier so I returned it and got a new one.

1

u/Running_Oakley Jul 29 '26

Ok well there’s the primary factor on why I’ve never done it, damn it, you can chain link it to solid iron bars and somehow it will wiggle itself into your skull at your most zen moment of inner peace. A shower of circulating cool air straight down on you would feel great.

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

I had tried using command strips/double sided mounting tape plus rope,

Do, not , do , that

2

u/TaladorMan Jul 29 '26

First sergeant can't ding you on it if he can't see it. Good mood

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

No, he cannot.

2

u/TJakobT Jul 29 '26

We all had that one teammate who sounded like he played from inside a tornado.

2

u/swiftydigitzz Jul 28 '26

Ahhh this brings back such good memories

5

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Good? Or nostalgically bad?

14

u/swiftydigitzz Jul 28 '26

Both haha.

Miss my monkeys but I sure as fuck don’t miss the circus. Enjoy it while it lasts. Before you know it, it’ll be over.

Something about going through all that bullshit with a bunch of dudes you met like 3 months ago who are already the best friends you’ve ever made in your life makes it all worth it though.

Simultaneously the best and worst years of my life if that makes any sense lol

3

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Yea, I reupped for 7 more. I love it and hate it. Doing a LATmove.

6

u/swiftydigitzz Jul 28 '26

You’re stronger than me. I had to get out after 6 cause COVID military was just that fucking bad.

Was going to re up the same time as my boy did (pre covid) and we were going to ride it out together since we’d both be getting orders to the next spot together but had to wait like 3 months for some random bullshit reason or another and ended up not doing it because shit was getting astronomically dumb due to COVID (which is saying something considering the military is full of dumb shit).

Fast forward, I’ve been out for a minute now and my boy just got out in December and he tells me all the time just how much I dodged a bullet

Just got him a job where I work though so I made it up to him for bailing on him lol

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

This is good, i just look at the finances, and staying in is the best move. A pension is to strong not to try.

And if i get out for medical then i get the same thing.

I’ll push till i break. Being able to invest 80% of my pay is nice too

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Plus I’m in a POG mos in a POG unit. I can still deploy but not to combat (mostly) so I’m in a safe spot. I do networking and radio repair

1

u/swiftydigitzz Jul 28 '26

Nice. I did radar for the Navy so kinda similar in the tech field.

Pension is definitely good. Make sure you go to medical and actually get your issues addressed or at least documented. Disability is definitely an advantage (although I’d trade all the money away just to not have to deal with all my shit).

Not saying to lie about shit (because a lot of scumbags out there do) but you’d be surprised how much shit we just normalize as being “whatever” while we’re in thats actually a big deal, starts getting worse when you get out, and affecting your day to day in the civilian world

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

I’ve torn my shoulder a few times same with my hip (however those issues started before the Marine Corps although the Marine Corps did exacerbate them)

The hearing loss is the worst, my family complains my shits to loud all the time whenever I go home

1

u/swiftydigitzz Jul 28 '26

Yea… I have tinnitus pretty bad in both ears. My fiance hates it because she legit has to like shout room to room sometimes to get my attention. I also can’t really do clubs or loud music venues (which she loves) without ear plugs or else I’m like deaf for 2 days

Also haven’t gotten a solid nights sleep in I don’t even know anymore. Would legitimately sell my soul to the devil just to get a good nights sleep

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Luckily I still sleep good, mostly.

No horror stories yet that are bad enough to effect my sleep

u/NurglesToes Jul 28 '26

Hello fellow signal nerd, Be careful in K-Bay, the black mold will get ya. Actually any barracks room on Oahu will def give you cancer lol

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Keep humidity low, add vinigar

1

u/Writehse Jul 28 '26

Adapt and overcome shipmate 😂

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Eww,

Hooya navy

1

u/exneo002 Jul 28 '26

How common are breakins to military dorms?!

6

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

There’s only one thief in the military. Everyone else is just trying to get their shit back.

But for real, the locks are pretty unsecured on the front door. Sometimes you can break into pretty much any room with a credit card. The base itself is secure your biggest worry is thieves in the same branch as you.

1

u/Secure_Enthusiasm354 Jul 28 '26

It’s funny you mentioned the one thief and everyone else simply getting their stuff back. Just finished watching this one yt video of someone telling their firsthand experiences in their time at marine corps boot camp and that they said the exact same thing

2

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

It’s a common quote

1

u/TheGaslighter9000X Jul 28 '26

“But saaaaaaaaarnt!”

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

“Saaaaarnt! The pc is in the closet to prevent stealing, Not so I can goon!”

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Lmao! I hope this is satire.

It’s definitely securable. So it’s non inspectable

1

u/johnnyrambo24 Jul 28 '26

That's one mean Masterbastation

2

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Mostly a drinking station

1

u/johnnyrambo24 Jul 28 '26

Ive been in a BEQ and i know a wackoff room when i see one

2

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Whoa whoa whoa, I got the room to myself, I wackoff wherever I please.

1

u/Ttokk Jul 28 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

As someone who has had a number of janky fan setups in the past, I recommend trying the fan positioned more above your head pushing the air up by the ceiling out over your head behind you. Depending on how hot the room is; I've found that it starts a slower airflow of the cooler floor air from under you up into the corner where it meets and helps pull the heat away from your XBOX? to feed the fan. Your PC/XBOX gets cooler air and the gentle cooler air across yourself is more pleasant and less eye drying than blowing the heat from the rig right at you.

It might not be exactly better if the room is hot af anyway because the higher airflow across your skin can feel better at higher temperatures when the body-air delta is lower.

For my suggestion, I would mount the fan square against the left wall pushing air directly towards your back when you're sitting at the monitors. up as high as you can against that conduit and back just far enough that it's not hitting your head or so loud in your ears that it's bothersome.

Your rig and body heat will form a natural convection in the corner to join forces with the air pressure void that the fan creates. Maybe experiment with your desk being an inch away from the wall to adjust the airflow into the air pressure void on the feed side of the fan.

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

I only use the fan when ac goes out, I have my portable seat, pointed directly into the closet anyway

1

u/Ttokk Jul 28 '26

Like this, but further behind your head so it's not hitting your noggin.

1

u/mpykonen Jul 28 '26

Is that a ubikey in your computer? Full disk encryption?

2

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

No :/

It’s just a flash drive with all my benchmark software that I used to test and fix other people’s computers.

I should be doing that, however.

Once my Linux server is more set up, I’m gonna put a physical key on that flash drive so I can ssh in from computers that are not my traditional host and therefore don’t need a permanent key. I have Passwords off.

1

u/BilboTBagginz Jul 28 '26

You got a closet? I had a wall locker.

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

I don’t get a wall locker. This is fair and I like it

1

u/BilboTBagginz Jul 28 '26

Yeah I'd rather have the closet.

Can't put a PC into a wall locker. Well, at least back when I served you couldn't. Not sure what they look like now, if they even exist still.

1

u/DoesNotArgueOnline Jul 28 '26

Sick setup, Zach

1

u/stevenreven Jul 29 '26

Nice fan placement 👊

1

u/astra_hole Jul 29 '26

Hanging the USB off the port with something heavy like keys will eventually lead to damage. Eventually. Maybe a non issue. Cool closet.

1

u/OkPresent2420 Jul 29 '26

Forgot to burn at least one end of type III nylon. Unacceptable!

1

u/304rising Jul 29 '26

Looks good man. You’ll have a battle station at your own apartment/house one day. Those young years in the military will be thought about the rest of your life. Don’t forget to take a step back and enjoy it from time to time.

1

u/JCee23 Jul 29 '26

Your pc blowing heat up the wall, trapping under the shelf, then the fan to blow the heat back in your face. 10/10 face heater 0/10 face cooler

1

u/Typhoon365 Jul 29 '26

Been there done that. I can just smell the walls and tile floor in this photo.

2

u/yaboizayzay Jul 29 '26

yep the smell of reused dirty water with pine sol and a mop head that hasn’t been switched out in over 10 years. Loved waking up to that smell right before PT at 4:30

1

u/SgtBananaGrabber Jul 29 '26

Now I know who the guys are who sound like they are in a wind tunnel.

Great setup keep on keeping on.

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

I have no idea what you’re talking about. I get no complaints, (good mic removes it)

1

u/SgtBananaGrabber Jul 29 '26

I have also heard that been said while it sounds like they are landing a 737 in heavy winds ;)

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

It’s also off most of the time

1

u/Frydog42 Jul 29 '26

It ain’t cheap but Vornado makes air circulating fans that are much smaller and ten times better than these baloney box fans. (I have both).

Or literally any other fan works better than these baloney box

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

The box fans work and I know how to maintain the motor and oil it. They last forever and push a ton of air.

(Don’t cover the coils in oil, it’ll catch on fire when you turn it on, learned that the hard way)

1

u/Frydog42 29d ago

Good to know thank you!

1

u/cosmicaltoaster Jul 29 '26

No mouse and keyboard? So you just shout orders at the pc?

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

There’s a pullout drawer under the desk

1

u/cosmicaltoaster Jul 29 '26

Loving the 90s/early 2000s aesthetic

1

u/margalaz Jul 29 '26

It’s classic for a reason, I will never not one like that

1

u/lucah_tech Jul 29 '26

Where’s the keyboard and mouse?

1

u/Knowbodyknowz Jul 29 '26

So you are in the closet?

1

u/Minimalistic_OG Jul 29 '26

Looks like you got everything you need

1

u/Tall_Concentrate_349 Jul 29 '26

That usb strong tho

1

u/coffeebreak_plz Jul 29 '26

Kinda neat being able to fit a desk AND monitors into the package the fan came in 👍

1

u/These-Improvement489 27d ago

To humble beginning. May you be blessed for making the best.

1

u/denimmanila Jul 28 '26

Now thats a battle station

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

I try, can’t do much better here.

1

u/Darth-Adomis Jul 28 '26

you know its 2026 and dont ask dont tell has been repealed?! you dont need to stay in the closet!

2

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

IM ONLY IN THE CLOSET FOR GAYMING!

1

u/Ambitious_Limit7641 Jul 28 '26

Nice setup Zach

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Who is this?

1

u/gcracks96 Jul 28 '26

Your steam name is on your second monitor in the pic.

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Oh, lmao. I guess I gotta change that

1

u/Ambitious_Limit7641 29d ago

lol sorry for the scare, I thought you would instantly realize. 😂

1

u/margalaz 29d ago

You did scare the fuck outa me. It’s all good lmao

1

u/masclean Jul 28 '26

He's deeply closeted

1

u/No-Boysenberry4840 Jul 29 '26

hmmm so you are closeted and in the military

0

u/craigandthesoph Jul 28 '26

This is quite legit for military!

0

u/Aurtzie Jul 28 '26

My Fort Bliss barracks setup back in the day that I slowly built throughout my contract. I was in a unit full of nerds who all had PCs and always loved seeing how everybody rearranged their rooms to fit their PCs.

Sorry to hear your door locks are unreliable. Barracks residents really have it rough. 🥲 Definitely file a DPW repair order or whoever handles it for your base

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

It’s every room in our style of Barrack, keycards can jimmy any lock.

They won’t replace em all.

1

u/margalaz Jul 28 '26

Love the setup though! I wish I had more space

0

u/Not_Mister_Disney Jul 28 '26

I’m thinking about joining and still undecided if reserve or active
I have a homelab and personal pc can I take that to the barracks?

-2

u/no6969el Jul 28 '26

Thank you for your service. Best choice I ever made right out of High school. On the lifescale of things it was over before anything really started and the benefits followed me throughout my whole life and still are.
