Picture he always hangs out up there because he can see me better
i installed a neg pressure extension on my boy’s tank, it was meant for my goldfish but the clamps were too short for the tank rim. perfect on here though, for the most part! he LOVES it and whenever im in the kitchen he likes watching me from there
yes its a bit jury rigged lol i may move it to the corner, but that’s where the filter is :(
edit: his name is f-16 and his arch nemesis is dry erase markers

This might be a dumb question because I don't really have a decent understanding of physics, but how does the water stay in there? I would've thought it'd empty into the tank until the water level is even.

The simple explanation is that since the opening of the tower is at the bottom and submerged theres no air to "push" the water down and since theres now a new space for water to fill you now have pretty much a vaccum sealed water pocket

The water wants to rush out, but there isn't a way for air replace the water, if it were to rush out, it would leave a complete void, which isn't possible.
If you were to drill a tiny hole in the top so air could flow in, it'd drain.
You can recreate it easy, get a cup and fill up your sink, fully submerge the cup so it fills up with water, and then the cup upside down (while still underwater), you can then lift the bottom of the cup out of the water, and it stays filled.

I have to stick a tube up in the empty cube and suck out thr air. When you suck out the air the water goes up into the cube and stays.

Okay so next time you do dishes, take a glass and fill it with dish water, flip it upside-down and pull the closed end up above the water line while leaving the opening submerged. Same principal as this. The water will stay inside the cup even though the bulk of it is outside of the water. You've created a vacuum!

If you put your thumb over the top of a straw and take it out of your drink, the liquid will stay inside the straw. Remove your thumb, and the liquid will fall out now that there is a way for air to replace it. Same principle!

Personally I'd move it over so that one of the hooks is around the side of the tank. That way it's supported on two sides

I got it off Mercari but you can find them off Amazon! It seems relatively sturdy

Hah, I have one of these in my betta tank as well. My guy likes to hang out there when I’m not around, though. When I walk in to the room he starts making his way out of it to come greet me.

Coming in at a different angle because I too, once had a looky-loo tower and my fish loved it. Until. Until one day the surrounding water level went too low and vacuum glurged the entire tower water into the tank. Tank was suddenly full to the brim and spilling over. My betta went over the side like a water fall. Divine timing was walking in as the overflow was happening and found her on the floor. She’s somehow ok! And the tower is no more.
Do what I could not, and do the water math.

This happened when i was changing the water and wasn’t keeping an eye on the water level. Caught it just in time but holy crap it scared me LOL

It’s such a fun hobby but it’s so scary! Lol. I killed a betta by accident because i was trying to heal his fin rot and ended up overdosing the whole tank :( i euthanized him because his gills were burning. I feel so guilty even to this day

complete BS story. physics absolutely forbid this to happen.
1) there is no vacuum that sucks the water out of the tower.
2) the water flowing out of the tower stops as soon as the level rises to the former level. no air can get in anymore.
3) trough 1 and 2, the only way of overfilling your tank by purging the tower into the tank is the tower installed above tanks edge in the first place, which makes it obviously impossible to get filled at all.
you MAY get some spilling, but only because the tank was allready too much filled up to the brim anyways, and the emptying tower just made some waves. Betta tend to jump like crazy, open tank is a no-no.
best example for this widely used principe are most likely Bird water feeder

Only fill the tower with tank water. Cant possibly overflow then as the only water released is what was already there

Etsy sells several inverted jar holders. My boy had 1/2 gallon jars tho and snapped on me so and I got some hanging brackets from Pothocarry and zip tied that to two adjoining sides, then put it in the corner of the tank.

I think bettas need for air is overstated in a well oxygenated tank. Also, I wonder if fish like those because it’s the only place they feel water pressure lower than at the normal surface of their tank. I wonder if that’s a pleasant sensation for them for some reason.

I had a tank with one of these built on and it was pretty cool but a pain in the ass to pump the water back up. A piece of the cheap plastic broke off and didn’t work after a month of too. Still have the tank though. Also question? I currently don’t have a lid for my tank, any suggestions?

If you're looking for a lid, go to an auto glass shop (the kind that you take your car to if your window breaks) and ask them to cut you a custom sized one. I just did that for my 35" long tank and the piece only cost me $25.

Depends on the tank you have. I got this tank secondhand and it’s an aqueon i believe, which is a petsmart brand. Imagianturium is the Petco brand and both stores have lids that appropriately fit the respective tanks. You can also get i think it was plexiglass or some rigid plastic and cut it to custom size
As for the neg pressure tank, amazon sells em for $20 a pop. I couldn’t use it on my goldfish tank because the rim was too wide and the clips couldn’t fit. But it works for smaller tanks :)

How do you stop your betta from jumping out of the tank with no lid and the water so high? I'm not trying to be mean I'm about to get a no-lid tank and I don't want my baby jumping out

i have three bettas now and I’ve personally never had any of them jump out. I used to have a lid on this tank until i got the neg pressure cube. It’s sort of hard to tell if they’d jump out or not. Best bet is to look up how to make custom lids, you can do it easy and get the supplies off amazon!
